View Full Version : getting front painted!

The front bumper of my CSL had some really badly applied Armourfend that was creased at the edges, which had sacrificed itself against some stonechips, sometimes tearing at the same time. The exposed paint gaps were still peppered with stone chips, including the paint area just ahead of the front wheel arches.

I'm bit of a stickler when it comes to having the car looking its best, so I had the Armourfend removed and found that the paint underneath was also badly stonechipped from the previous-previous owner before the Armourfend had been fitted. :(

So instead of dabbling with the stonechip repair kit :clown:, I've decided to have the front bumper resprayed and the area just ahead of the front wheel arches also done to get rid of the irritating stone chips. Am also getting the front splitters re-lacquered, so hopefully the front end will look sparkly new again. :)

Pics to follow once I get her back, hopefully later this week!

personally leave it be if you drive the car, i had my bumper and splitters done for the same reason but no more than 10 miles down the road it was chipped again.

I wouldn't bother if you plan on tracking the car regularly or doing high road mileages.

Even when it is painted and fitted with protection film, the film will only begin to look shite after a while, which defeats the object IMHO.

I went the route of getting the car professionally detailed which rids the car of some of the lighter marks and scratches.

Unfortunately the CSL front end just attracts chips and damage. :banghead:

everyone has a different experience with this stuff and perhaps it is just black cars that suffer the most?

Yeah, I'm not doing a lot of mileage, but I hate seeing my P&J with bad acne and the white basecoat puss pushing through - especially rolling into the summer when she sees more daylight! Mind you, a front end (not bonnet) paintjob is just a couple hundred quid, so it's almost worth getting it done each year to as new again rather than 1500+ for the film.

Will do Shim. It's a bodyshop I've known well as he has prepped and restored vintage 911s to concours standard for the past 20+ years and he has his own oven. Should get it back in a couple of days, will let you know how it goes!

Mine's in the paintshop at the moment, both the front bumper and the leading edges of the front wings are being painted, also having new splitters and headlamp lenses fitted at the same time too

The bonnet's being being mopped and I'll touch the chips in myself.
All four wheels are being refurbed (plus new centre caps and M badges) and two new rear tyres fitted too. It's shaping up to be an expensive month . . . .

So who's recognised as being the best for Paintshield/Ventureshield type products ?

Ive yet to be impressed by venturesheild or the like, Im too fussy :banghead:

I got my bumper resprayed end of last year and it still looks minted. Body shop told me they could not re-laquer the splitters so Id be interested to see/hear how you get on Ade

He had a look at them up close, and he said 'no problem'. He's painted and lacquered bits of CF for me before so I know relacquering CF is possible. Hopefully these shouldn't give him trouble!

with most film its down to the installer!!!!!!

if you get a cowboy you get a shit job, ventureshield has some good installers and they have some shite ones...its all about finding a reputable installer.

film has come a long way over the years, its was once known to go yellow, edges folding etc etc etc but the biggest factor is getting a good installer and IMO Tom and his team at Paintshield do a fantastic job

Not a proper job, should cost you a lot more but chips will occur again!

Really? Don't critique the work without seeing it and basing it on cost without knowing who's doing the job ;)

Just cling-film the car - cheap as chips and you could renew it every week if you so wish to keep it fresh looking :hahaha: :clown:

Well, I got the car back today just before some epic thunderstorms(!), and she looks gorgeous :smt055

He even managed to emulate the exact same factory paint finish orange peel on the rest of the car! :hahaha:

He relacquered the carbon splitters using proper 2-pack lacquer, but he said it needed to have a flexible additive added so that it does not crack at the first sign of flex or stone impact. He commented that the tolerance on the splitters is very tight, and it's not surprising that 3rd party/non-OEM splitters are not always a good fit. I'm very happy with the results - they really do look as good as they would brand new.

He said it's a simple job to do, and he would be able to do them quite easily for others if there was interest. His process is to simply strip them back, relacquer, and 'bake' in his oven. He cannot repair cracked CF, and he said there may be very slight, almost imperceptible dimples where a stone may have penetrated back to the raw CF. The cost is about £125, so not the cheapest, but the finish is really excellent and he uses the correct lacquers etc.

Photos tomorrow when it's not raining! :)

Looks a clean Job. Did you get the parts under the headlight and lower bonnet done? Nice work. Just waiting for my splitters to turn up tomorrow from a final top coat and oven session.

Nope, I decided to leave those bits covered with the Armourfend as those parts were untouched and the film was applied cleanly. :)

Looking good Ade, loving the shiny splitters. LH is a poor fit though, Id have a fiddle with it.

Yep, spotted that after the photo! A quick adjustment of the screw underneath, and all good again
