I know there worth what ever someone will pay, but a CSL on 35,000 miles how much would you be paying a private seller presuming the car is in A1 condition??

Ideally looking not to loose a fortune, as I don't know how long i'll be keeping the car could be months, could be years!!

depends what you want on the car? i advertised mine last week with loads of parts at 29900. taken it off sale for now and may keep it but i am getting rid of some of the parts i put on the car.

good examples are hard to find as you will soon discover.

good look with your search.

Car is de-restricted, fsh, a/c, climate control, p/sensors, r/sensors, xenons and a stereo. If you paid around £27k is it likely to fetch close to that 10,000 miles later or is it going to be low £20k's?

As Mark said, good cars, REALLY good cars are rare, we looked at loads, nearly all of them have issues, too high mileage for the money, poor condition, carbon poor inside and out, missing S/H, no BMW warranty, missing 1200 mile service (essential) so although there are a fair few for sale at any one point, if your fussy, a long shortlist will soon be reduced to just a couple of cars in my experience. Thing is, usually the guys with the shonky cars want pretty much the same money as those with the exceptional cars, the good ones will just sell quickly. Mine is a perfect 26000 mile example, up for sale next week or so for £35000 and not a penny less

Then again, I may just keep it, missing a cab but summers nearly done innit:hahaha::hahaha::hahaha:

Grab a CSL. You shouldn't lose that much on it if you look after it, even if you only keep it a short while.

You're looking at £25-30k for most cars now bar the really low miles examples <20k miles. Mods add a little value but usually indicates tracking. If that's what you plan then buy a modified one (so long as it's been cared for) and save some cash by not modding it yourself. A BBK is a must have for short UK track work IMHO.

I never intended to track mine when i bought it and it was pristine with just upgraded pads and brake lines for mods. I have since tracked it a fair bit and have spent loads duly modifying it...

I now take great delight hounding a fair few GT3s out on track and the CSL has gotta be a better bet than your Noble M12 idea... ;)

So full BMW service history and a BMW warranty are a must? I'm all for full service history (inc. reccomended independants) but didn't think the warranty would be too much of any issues... are they really that un-reliable??

In the main CSLs are reasonably reliable but don't forget - these cars are all over 5 years old now - regardless of registration date.

All cars should have had a few recall jobs sorted and most will have had warranty work done at some point. Mine had loads done before i bought it - which i saw as a plus point in the end. I have owned mine for 15 months and it has suffered an alternator failure and faulty throttle potentiometers - both are warranty items. A warranty is subjective - you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. I think it's worthwhile in my case but then i will do up to 10k miles this year - including European travel and 5 Ring trips with a few UK track days.

Test drive one - you'll like it, and the CSL was designed with track in mind - unlike other so-called sports cars! ;)

Ok the brakes arent great...!

i have had warranty's on loads of cars and the BMW one has been the best, they seem to just replace anything with no arguments. essential for a car that will be driven hard IMO. I am sure it pays for its self in most cases and mine has already done so even with a small claim for the front ball joints.

if you find a CSL with 60k miles and stones chipped to buggery, with all standard stuff put back on and a mark on the rear seats, it'll be worth about £35k cash in twenties.....:supz:

On M-torque there was CSL sold for only 16k with FSH and in decent condition. They said it must only have 2k spended to get him in good condition. This time it is very hard to sell a car when you priced it very high.

@ AUCTION

Not exactly a good barometer for the private market though.

It was a repossession with over 60K miles and not in great condition - still a cracking bargain, but like it's been said above, not a barometer for setting values.

The CSL has one of the strongest residual values of any car I can think of. I sold my last two between 1.5 and 2 years ago and they are probably worth much the same today as when I sold them....assming you're not sticking 20,000 miles a year on the speedo. IMO it's a car that is greater than the sum of its parts.

They first came out at close to £60K (£20K'ish more than the standard M3) and took a quick drop before most people realised just how fantastic they were. Prices then had a bit of a resurgence and for the last couple of years have stuck at around £30K or so. Keep it in good order and it'll be worth the same in 12 months time.

If the car recently seen at aution had been placed on Pistonheads it would have sold for early £20K's.

So, realistically whats a car on 35,000 miles... full service history, just not all BMW (1 specialist) worth? Presuming the car is in great condition inside and out.

What are CSL's like for stone chips, do the flared arches get a light peppering? Also another thing i've noticed once or twice is a bit of corrosion in the laqure on the CSL sill plates, is this normal??

Front brake discs and pads... how much would they set me back? Also whats the going rate for an Inspection II, Oil Change + Coolant. Finally what are Continental tyres like on the back like, any good or need scrapping?

I sold mine for under £25k, 65k miles.

I'd say approx 30k depending on options, who serviced it and history

Yes and yes

I think InspII is approx 800-1200 depending on which dealer.

My experience with Conti tyres is poor except for the family chugger. Deffo go Mich PS2s if they are for normal road use. (PS2s can also handle the occasional trackday much better than other road tyres)

I just paid £25K for a 47K mile example in fantastic condition. Just had Inspection 2 (2k ago); Inspection 1 done in time; lots of bills under warranty (nothing major and as already said, not a bad sign neccesarily, often a sign of meticulous owner with a good relationship with the local dealer - they even replaced the steering wheel due to alcantara bobbling !).

Totally standard car with air con, business CD, Xenons and still another 6m on BMW comprehensive warranty.

To be honest, I believe (hope!) I dropped on a good example at a great price.

A good 35K miler I would price at £28.5-£31K depending on condition / upgrades.

Had it 3 days and unless financial circumstances dictate otherwise, it'll be a keeper. As suggested earlier, get one now whilst you can, keep it nicely / sensible miles and values will hold

Nothing, SERIOUSLY nothing gets close for the money. It really is a fantastic machine that just happens to have a 3 series shell on top of it !
Closest is a GT3 which will cost you 10-15K more. Very nice car but less practical. Having never driven one, I wont comment on comparisons in other criteria.

All IMHO

(lookat that, 3 days old and all of a sudden I am a fookin expert :hahaha:)

Just added a couple of pics to my profile...
