Depends on the type of noise!:hahaha::hahaha:

Seriously though, if the noise is grumbly, it will be the gears which can happen even on an e46 m3 / CSL.

Mine had the same, replaced under warranty.

Is there any powerloss?

Major major if you leave it and don't attend to it - could mean a whole new engine ...

on the old E36's M's there was a vanos filter that ppl often neglect to change that causes noise as it gets clogged. I'm not 100% sure whether they hv one in the E46 VANOS, but I image it does.

VANOS issues are big issues so keep a close eye on it.

could be your seals. But if you are under warranty, get the whole thing changed.

This is not what causes the noise.

There old issues with the e36 m3 evo vanos were:

1) Shearing of Vanos Solenoid bolts
2) Solenoid malfunction
3) Grumbly Vanos gears.

Item 1 & 2 could would cause failure, number 3 seems to be more of a feature of the Vanos.

The main problem was that BMW dealers changed Vanos uses because of noise and perhaps not because of failure.

They would also change the solenoids but ignore the sprockets and gears.

Or they would replace the gears but not the sprockets.

Anyway, I am going off on a tangent.

My CSL had a new Vanos.

My csl had a new vanos fitted and then about a month later it started the noise again but was scary this time:bigcry:

Bmw stripped the head and the cam followers are like 50p pieces not smooth
it is getting a new head now.

So if your CSL is grumbling get it checked ASAP or it could be more serious than you think

There is more to this story to come but it is still on going enough said

Noticed mine getting a little rattly on start up when cold around 2k revs. Goes away after a few mins but starting to worry now that it could develop into something more serious? Might try to arrange to leave it with dealer overnight in the next week or two so they can have a listen. See if they can do something about the fan as well which now almost always comes on as well...
