My oil level has dropped to 0.1 so im going to fill her up. Ive read on the forum that Castrol edge 10W 60 is the one to use. However the only one i can seem to find in Halfords is Castrol edge 0W 30. IS this ok to use ??

No, I don't know the exact story, but there have been plently of threads on MTorque about not using anything but the proper (very expensive) stuff. Not worth it, buy a big pot of the right stuff from BM on Tues!

edge is referred to as sport oil at £14.00 per litre

TWS is the recommended oil for all M cars - it's specified in the service and is also sold over the counter at BMW parts.
I have bought 2 refills at two different dealers and both specified TWS for the CSl...;)

A write up I did for another forum on the engine oil ...
ENGINE OIL .... THERE IS ONLY 1:
- There are mixed information out there about the engine oil for the S54B32, some say there's two approved oil out there, whilst others stand by the fact that there's only 1 approved BMW engine oil for this motor.
- THERE IS ONLY ONE APPROVED BMW ENGINE OIL FOR THIS MOTOR PERIOD!!
So where's the confusion coming from? - well put simply, different branding between different continents. And the initial information from BMW that Castrol RS 10W-60 was also an approved oil in the Training manual for the S54B32 - it no longer is and have not been since end of 2002 when engines started blowing up.
Page from the training manual (read the last sentence)
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n319/M3_Power/s54b32-7.jpg
REMEMBER THE FORMULA RS 10W-60 IS NO LONGER APPROVED!!! THERE'S A BMW TIS FOR THIS (SINCE MID 2002)
The ONLY Approved oil is: Castrol TWS 10W-60 (or the UK equivalent Castrol Edge 10W-60) - These two are the SAME OIL, just different branding between different continents.
Castrol Edge "Sport" 10w-60 IS NOT AN APPROVED OIL and not the same as the UK version of Castrol Edge 10w-60
Here's the spec for the TWS
TWS Motorsport 10-60
Relative density @ 20.0 deg C = 0.865
Viscosity at 40 deg C = 163.1
Viscosity at 100 deg C = 24.3
Viscosity Index = 181
Flash Point (closed) deg C = 198
Pour point deg C = -42
TBN = 8.1

Finally took delivery of my Castrol Edge yesterday. Ive put in 3 litres of it but on the readout it still show 0.1. However when i do the test in the manual where it says hold the sport button down while the engine is idling it shows 1.1 Anyone know why the main readout still shows 0.1? is it broke?

3 litres top-up! Feck me - you may well have overfilled it...
The main reading does take a decent drive to reflect any change - at least 50 miles or so in my experience after my last service. If the initiated test reading says '1.1' then that could confirm overfilling too as that's the max reading it will go to - even if the 'actual' oil level is above that... (which isn't good) :smt012

Shit. I read on here that it took 5 litres so i put in 3 to be safe as i knew it was very low. Drove it about 20 miles last night so ill have another run tonight to see if it changes. What happens if there is too much in now?

You've got 2 litres of of extra oil in there - get it drained off asap IMO I wouldn't be driving it - potential to blow seals etc (been there and done it on a dry sump F355 :( )
0.1 ltr reading needs 0.9 (1ltr) addint to it.

I'm not sure of the full implications - i'm sure someone on here does though... Obviously with a fair bit more oil in there than the norm, it would mean a bit more resistance on the moving parts as it will be a little swamped so to speak. Other than that i am not totally sure :smt017
If i had a reading of '0.1' i would have put around 750mls in and seen what that did to the reading after a drive, then add a little more as required once the reading stabilised.

While they are at it get them to manually check the oil level. Remind them you want the oil to be just below the max. Every time I have had an oil change this way the read out has always been either 0.7, or 0.8 after a good drive. It also returns back to this figure after a lot of short trips/track work. On my car as far as I am concerned 0.7/0.8 means full.

as said above you will need to drain some of the oil out, always check the dip stick when doing a oil change,to get to the dip stick you will have to remove the front of the air box.
pull up power steering resivoire 1
disconnect 2 plug's,push in clip to remove 2
remove the strut brace 3
disconnect pipe, push bottom of clip in to remove it 4
unclip the cable cover & lift cables up out of the way 5
unbolt the 4 torx screws, use a torx bit with a spanner for back one 6
remove cover by lifting at back & pushing down at front
you will now see the red dipstick.
to drain some oil out, jack car up & remove the inspection flap
use allen socket on plug, you will have to be quick when removing sump plug & refitting, this bit will be messy
when you refit air box screws, don't over tighten them
I'm interested to know why my CSL was reading +1.1 after a service then suddenly next time I checked around 100 miles later it suddenly was at + 0.5? It dropped .1 while at the ring and now sits at 0.4
So why the sudden drop? Had it not adjusted yet to the new level? Admittedly before it went it for service it was reading 1.1 so if the theory goes it takes a while to adjust, it might have been the new level setting in after the service?

If you're talking about the long-term reading then yes it takes quite a while to obtain it's reading (a good steady long drive, 10+ miles I reckon without being sad enough to measure the exact distance :hahaha: ).
