View Full Version : Bye bye CSL. Hello GT3

A sad but happy day.

I waved goodbye to the CSL yesterday, but received a Mathey Racing converted Mk1 996 GT3 as part of the deal.

I have really loved my CSL and think that any petrolhead should own one at some point in their lives, but I have always wanted a GT3 and this particular one is one of the very best available - it will see off 997 GT3 RS's on the track - words from Mike Wilds after he drove it at Oulton Park recently - so I can't wait to find that out for myself

I'll still be keeping active on the forum though as there is a good bunch on here :)

Have a great Easter Weekend folks :)

You're absolutely right about that... I'm sure in the GT3 you'll have a wonderful time, but you'll still have a special place in your heart for the CSL. For me it just tickles all the senses, they even smell unique (I'm seeking counselling!)

GT3 looks very menacing btw, enjoy!

It is a Matt Black vinyl wrap done by a company called Raccoon - http://www.raccoon.co.uk/homepage.php

Reverend - I agree with you and can see me owning another CSL in the future when I can afford 2 fun cars

Looks stunning mate. I remember seeing a matt black GT3 in flesh at a PH run last year and can say it looked and sounded mental. Maybe the same one. Enjoy!

I got a quote with raccoon for wrapping the CSL. Can you vouch for the quality of the wrap?

It is a very good quality mate. The vinyl is very thin but strong, so won't spoil the paint underneath when removed (hopefully), but then they guarantee their work apparently if they remove it and will make good any problems.

Compared to the vinyl graphics I had on my Scooby, it is much thinner - can only be a good thing in my eyes

TRAITOR!!!!

Just joking - congratulations on the new ride ... my all time favourite GT3 is definitely the MK1 (I'd own one over a 997 GT3 any day - including the RS) - so simple and to the point, much like the CSL is. As the old adage goes - they don't make them like they used to!!

Actually before I bought the CSL I NEARLY bought a MK1 GT3 myself - but lost out to another buyer by half an hour or so ... will definitely buy one in the future though I am sure ... enjoy it ...

I'll always have a soft spot for the CSL, and would love to experience a fully sorted, 400bhp CSL with cams, diff, suspension, brakes and remap all sorted. The induction noise is just awesome, but then the flat 6 scream of the GT3 is ....... :)

Well he's enjoying the CSL at the moment, I can confirm that. Cracking Manthey GT3 you have there, epic tool and the ideal change from a CSL though I suspect you'll have to play yourself into the GT3 as its very different to the CSL and even more raw.

Enjoy I adored my GT3.

There is no doubt that the PE is another level on track, and the allure of the GT3 is that it takes a long time to discover the last 3%. Few (if any?) cars reward as the GT3 does on track and also possess the engineering integrity to do the Tescos run with ease, everyday if necessary. Where the GT3 is 70/30 track/road, the CSL feels more suited to fast road driving (in standard form) and is probably more 70/30 road/track (although I have yet to take my CSL on track).

Both are awesome cars that are probably the finest of their ilk

GT3 seems the natural progression for me. Though it'd need to be a 997 as I think the 996 is pretty ugly. Though the Mk1 is the best looking of all the 996s.

To be honest I thought the CSL sounded better than the boxer 6 of any Porsche ... meh ...

The MK1 996 GT3 is pretty much on par performance wise with the CSL .. the MK2 is definitely a step up and the 997 GT3 (or the RS) is quite a bit more compared to the CSL.

Having said that however the CSL is much easier to go fast around a track vs a GT3 - put two equal drivers in either car and the GT3 would be quicker no doubt, but put an above average driver in the CSL and it'd be similar to the GT3.

Both are great cars - I would happily own either for sure - and a Manthey example is even more desirable for sure!!

Some pictures of the interior perhaps??

As for the sound, the Manthey kit I think is a different world of flat 6 sound. Makes it pure race car. I'm biased of course but there is no comparison of the sound from a standard GT3 and the Manthey equiv. I think it's a bit like the CSL as the Manthey kit rids the car of the air box, the MAF and just has a cup filter straight onto the engine. Then the sounds from the full headers, cats and new boxes change it again. at 8000rpm you'd think you were in a proper race car.

As for performance I can't comment not having driven a CSL in anger like the GT3. To be honest I don't think there would be much in it apart from down a straight.

Housey
13-04-2009, 12:10 PM
Where the GT3 scores is when you get it over 6000rpm at which point it has a spine tingling wail to it that sounds fantastic. The CSL sounds great at most speeds and from the outside coming towards you sounds epic....until it drives past and then is sounds shit with the tinny rasp that all E46 M's suffer from. When we did the rolling road event at Thorney Motorsport with MTorque I don't think anyone would argue that the GT3's sound fantastic at full chat on the rollers.

GT3 just edges away on the straights! I was all over a yellow Mk.1 on braking and in the corners on Saturday but he wouldn't budge knowing that he would pull a big enough lead before the next set of corners :moan:

GD, down the back straight at Donny I was pulling this one in for the first half due to better speed through Coppice. There was one lap where I caught him at Macleans and had to sit behind him until that straight. He pulled to the right, indicated and kept the power on all the way down to Goddards. We were exactly the same but the CSL was alot better on the brakes (25-30 yards better)...

Gone but not forgotten :bigcry: But I'd have my CSL for a quick cross country thrash ANY day tbh. Not as challenging, but quicker over give and take bumpy roads IMO.

Not too bad old boy, still in my normal state of car indecision. I bailed on the Series 2 GT3, the current ecconomic downturn is not something that sustains £90K motors for me so decided to battern down the hatches and stick with the RS4....well this week at least. Had loads of bimmers over the years, well into double figures but never had a CSL and its still an itch I need to scratch not least when I know so many owners who keep telling me the same thing...."DO IT YOU GAYER!!". Most of the owners I know are well dodgy though Nords, Spine on a Bap, Shimmy, Anis, Woppum, 3Wheels, you and many others, I mean, would you trust any of them. I suspect I'd finally get into one only to find them all in RS4's shouting nah nah ne nah nah!

...and we all know the CSL is just an M3 with a cardboard boot
