View Full Version : Anglesey today
Great day was had by me and Radders, eventually decided on Cups (mine brand new) Left Radders cottage in Llangollen at 8am to be greeted by lashings of sleet and snow. WTF????? The CSL went sideways with a hint of throttle going over white lines, truly scary!!
Must admit, was slightly dissapointed with the grip levels of the CSL compared to mine and Radders E36 M3 trackcar, but as the day wore on I altered my style to eradicate largely the understeer, and really enjoyed the day. Oh, brakes, mine standard, Rad on AP's. Braking was much the same, with me on DS3000 pads. BIG difference was that through the day I gradually "lost" the pedal, and the brakes now judder like a good un. The just will NOT withstand abuse such as I dish out.
Shagged my Cups in one day :bigcry: And it bollocked the fuel down it like Georgie Best gulping champagne in a titty bar:bigcry: Cheaper using the Strad!!! some pics....

Looks like a great day was had and I can't believe you've gone through a set of Cups in one day!!! When you add that onto the fuel and cost to get on track it can be an expensive day out right enough...but who cares, its such great fun.
I was just looking at the next day at my Local track after I get home, 15th May, WOOHOO!

Looks like you had a good day :-)
Tom Schirmer in Germany told me the Cups are designed for a certain amount of negative camber, quite high 3 degrees or thereabouts I think I recall. Reason I mention this is because I've never gone through a set of Cups in only 1 trackday (I run about -3.5), so I wonder if because the std CSL is 1 or 1.5 degrees negative when taken on track and given a good skelping that's what's causing you to wear them out?
Obviously toe out would affect them as well, but I presume your running standard Geo?
Just a thought, I could be wrong :)

only time i have got near to a whole set of fronts was at BEDFORD before i had adjustable camber plates
i used to wear thru there the outer rubber quite quickly and partly caused by not enough front negative camber and partly caused by runing too many hot laps and getting the rubber too hot

I near ruined a brand new set of front PS2s at the Ring last year for the reasons that Shimmy mentions - front left sidewall was balder than a Fillipino teen bride...
I had adjustable top mount camber plates fitted in November so it will be interesting to see what tyre wear i get with them on track setting.

What Geo settings would you recommend for fast road/trackdays Steve...

What Geo settings would you recommend for fast road/trackdays Steve...
Erm....feck, I knew someone would ask me this LOL
I can't 100% remember, but I'm getting the car aligned next week (after the rear axle was removed) so I'll check with the garage and let you know. As my car is pretty much 100% track I think my settings would be too extreme for normal road use, will wear out the tyres too fast. I would suspect 1 to 1.5 degrees negative on the front, and can't remember on the back :hahaha:
One thing I can recommend avoiding for the road -at the beginning of 2007 I had (on advice) some toe out set on the front, the car was excellent on turn in and I really liked it, what I didn't realise was the wear on the inside of the tyres - driving round the ring, 3rd last corner, the car suddenly went sqweeeelbbb (technical term) and when I got back to the car park I could hear a hissing noise, the inside edge was balder than Glendog74's teen bride (didn't know you were married Glendog!). Perhaps having driven for 3 hours on german autobahns the day before had something to do with it...

Steve, I wouldn't ever run toe out on the front for road-use, as the roads are just too crap. Turn-in is pretty stunning with a few mins TOE-IN anyway. On a glass smooth track (eg, Silverstone) it may well be worth it though

As discussed you're killing the tyres because you probably don't have enough negative camber at the front. If you get your car setup properly you can certainly get more life and better performance from those Cups.
I don't recommend toe out on the front of a car for road use.

Good pics. Cottage looks like a nice getaway.
How did you lads find the CSL in comparison to your Strads? Whats more fun?
Im running Thorneys 'Fast Road' geometry, which is toe'd out in the front. Gotta say I dont really like it. I find itodd that they'd give that kinda setting for road when all you lads seem to be advising against it. At the time of getting it done I told Thorney I wasnt intending on tracking.
What Geo should I be using for road? Ive KW v3's on too.

Suspension was very soft in comparison but once we had changed the driving style to reduce the understeer i enjoyed it more. don't think there was much more time to be had out of a lap and we were passing pretty much everything.
Me and Hazy run a M3 E36 on the track (full track car) and TBH it made us realise how good this M3 is. The m3 would have spanked the CSL's if it had been there..
will upgrade the suspension on the csl and this should give a few more seconds per lap.

Had mine set up for max neg camber on standard suspension (-2 degrees front and back) seemed to work as regards lack of edge wear, have just peeled back the centre section of the front tyres. Carrying too much corner speed I guess, used to the pace of the M3 perhaps?? Hey ho, its only money innit LOL!!!

and bear in mind this was after a 2 hour steady drive home that cleaned them up a hell of alot!!!!

All i can say Hazy is bloody good effort mate! it's good to see you were giving it some
But after reading what some of the other experienced guys have said it might be an idea to get your geo setup checked again???

TBH mate, loved using the CSL and will do so again, but the M3 is just sooooo good, gonna mainly stick to that with the occasional CSL or Strad day chucked in for good measure. The M3 has had £27k spent on it (not by me and Rad I hasten to add) so it seems a bit daft to throw a load of lolly at the CSL to create ANOTHER track weapon when I already have one.
I'm thinking the tyre wear might be down to pressures??? Was running 30/32 psi hot..... might be a touch too soft, allowing the tyre to roll a little too much? No doubt someone will advise me....

Nope, 30-32 psi hot is what everyone recommends. Max camber on the front is neg 2 without adjustable top plates, Michelin recommend neg 2.5 to 3 degrees for cups so probably that. I would just get a set of adjustable topmounts from Simpsons or Thorneys as they are only £200-300 (something like that), if they make a set of front cups last an extra trackday, it would be worth it!

yeah. Mich slicks, Radders brought 50 of them for £500, bargain of the year!!! Mad using the CSL's really, the M3 costs us nowt TBH...
They were expensive buggers them ramps!!!! I already had the truck from my bike racing days, so it made sense to stick a winch in it and buy a set of ramps to get my cars in, works a treat mate, carries all our tools, fuel, three sets of wheels, extra slicks, cracking little workhorse my truck is.. pics of it with my racebikes..
