View Full Version : Cylinder head close up
Getting into this taking picture thing ,.... close up of csl head polished inlets , look good on csl head, not sure if std m3 has this? Exhaust outlet doesn't get the same treatment, Potential problem I've noticed sticking chain tensioner piston. This one is not smooth in operation anybody ever had to replace on ??

No, CSL had special inlet valves

My mechanic advised me on replacing it while he did treated my VANOS with Beisan stuff. I can ask him what is his take on it? But from what i remember this part is only around 80 pounds.. so not that expensive.
The picture of the inlet valves is worrying, it looks like metal flakes?

Hi select , not flakes just dust. Head has been lying around to long collecting dust  I definitely think these tensioners could be future problem sticking, giving rise to loose chain issues.

Seeing as how you are doing extensive work to the engine anyway, i would just go ahead and replace it. If you need it i can see if i can provide you with the partnumber. Let me know.

I think Chad was referring to what looks like porting work on the inlet side of the head. I read something a long time ago that CSL heads were given some hand finishing (A bit like Honda Type-R engines back in the day). I don't know how true it is though and I've never seen a normal M3 head side by side with a CSL head. Would be interested to know.

Hi Julian, this is a bit of fun for me, more research and practice run than anything else, for when I do my motor, this is a spare engine we have from my lads car, he bought new motor from BMW , as this one previously spun a shell , but it all looks not to bad considering it did 100k , will be doing a few practice rebuilds with this one:thumbs:

You are correct, i did not read correctly.
Yes CSL had ported/polished inlet side to match the better designed inlet valves. Exhaust side is as far as i am concered the same as normal m3.

I am very jealous of your project and i have much respect for you rebuilding the engine
To be honest i am not very surprised that it spun a bearing shell. They should be replaced every 60k miles, if its been driven like its meant to be, in my opinion.

The inlet valves are the same as regular m3, it's the exhaust valves that are different. Port work is the same as regular S54 too.

Sadly I can't restore the photobucket pics, despite my best efforts :bigcry:

Yes, seems like i was mistaken. Thanks uncle benz ;)
My version of a water leak down test while striped, only no 5 hardly leaked number 4 was the worst, pics taken after a 3 minutes. Will lightly lap all the valves in and re try them again
Bought a new toy, make life easier to build motor. so thought I’d start practice rebuild of engine, from bare block up, crank back in, rods N pistons, next job lap in valves on head, cure them leaky valves. Got to say ring compressor is crap. Made the job to slow, and I chipped oil ring so left it out for now , know better next time don’t buy crap .anybody recommend a decent one???
If of interest to anybody, After my water version leak down test ...valves out of 3and 4 cylinders just to take a look,,, inlet look almost spotless, exhaust looking pretty crappy on the valve face. , But no obvious lapped or ground angel on exhaust valves, this was a new cylinder head that was fitted by bmw, at about 70 k, I’m really not sure if when they supply a new head, it comes completely assembled, Or they assembly in workshop with original valves etc ,,but no obvious sign that they ever got lapped in on rebuild,:banghead: Or even did a proper job on shimming, as they were almost all, way out from memory, It did run ok ish , but could have been a lot better if done properly imo, but fair play to the lads ,am sure they don’t get much time to spend on this type of head rebuild,,... my local Nissan dealers outsource head rebuilds shame on them,, , But lad being what he is, went and bought a new brand new motor from bmw,,leaving this one to play with...:smokin: few pictures. Inlet porting looks ace...
All valves out. Will give ports a clean and re lap valves in, See how they turn out
Couple of pictures before and after hopefully worth the time , Lapped area should be 1.2. Inlet And exhaust 1.4 mm

Definitely worth the time mate! Looks like a nice job

Cheers. Very time consuming , just keep plugging away at it. Spent a couple of hrs cleaning up exhaust ports, bit more to do. Then give it a good clean up see how it looks then will refit valves, probably temporarily fit camshafts and do shims just to get them in the ballpark, :smokin:
If of interest,,,Taken a few measurements of 100k piston and rings csl motor to compare with spec sheet, Top ring just on outer spec, ...2nd ring look like it takes the biggest hit, and found 2nd worn outside bmw spec, So for me,this says a new rings wouldn’t hurt . Wonder how typical this is on higher mileage motors?? ..... top ring end gap 0.35 ....2nd ring 1.0 Even piston ring axial play near to max wear on 2nd ring , Piston Ring height in spec. 1.2 and 1.5mm .. a new ring set wouldn’t do any harm putting motor back in ballpark.... be interesting to know how much Bhp these motors have lost with time/use ???
‘Anybody’ been brave enough to have a Csl dynamometer tested recently, to see how the old girls are doing , or are they all rapped up in cotton wool now:whistle:?????

I did a dyno run a few years ago but mine at 109k km is still going strong.
Acceleration times are spot on, so performance has not degraded

All still sounds good Alexk. Did you keep any figures .
I’ve been looking at various options on bearings and rings for this motor rebuild, Looking at some by king. Full set piston rings £170 npr rings. King rod bearings £120. Mains about £160 . Also Looking at acl shells std or race bearings £120 for full sets , I think a full head gasket set was about £170. Anybody got any feedback on these parts, or used any of these.?? .... .......I’ve got most of these parts oem bar rings ,. Oem rings are so expensive so don’t want to use on this motor build, so savings oem parts for my car if ever needed.. any feedback welcome guys .:smokin:
Pickup a full set of rings for all six pots for £170. bmw charge this for 1 set, quality wise no idea, Anyway some pictures in 100k mile cylinder, In shot both no 2nd rings. Top old ring, bottom new ring. Piston ring End gap top 1.05 worn. New piston ring Bottom 0.35 Bang on. ..bmw spec. 0.35 to 0.60 .. Old rings seem to have lost a fair bit of spring tension compared to new rings. From what I’ve worked out from measurements Mileage’s above 70k rings are on there limits of bmw spec end gap, :bigcry: probably no big deal  Anybody used these rings before on a csl???
Picked up a more bits for project rebuild ,opted for king race shells over king std, bit more expensive but why not , Full set mains, full set of rod bearings , Full head gasket set, includes head gasket , also in picture is genuine bmw new head gasket,, I’ve got to say elring kit looks identical to genuine bmw,, gasket set, everything you need ...anybody tried these shells and gasket, “”””Feedback welcome good or bad”””” All parts from Lymm engine components “from stock”
