View Full Version : Maybe time sell the CSL - What could be next?

As much I as I enjoy my CSL and miss driving it whenever I’m away, I have managed to set apart a good amount for a potential upgrade. While going with basically the same ideology of vehicle;
Track orientated, naturally aspirated, rear wheel drive, lightweight version, carbon fibre everything, and investment potential (no depreciation).
It’s between the Challenge Stradale and the 430 Scuderia (more so than a GT3). Anyone have experience in each?
They cost roughly the same, obviously the CS is the more raw, emotional car and the Scuderia is newer, easier to live with and faster…
But if you could only have 1, and it is your only car…
PS – Not quite the same style, but similar money, I was also looking at Testarossa’s (1990) for an old school GT feel or a Merc SLS for a modern GT feel.
Thoughts?

Challenge Stradale in a heartbeat. Nice dilemma to have.

As said challenge Stradale without a doubt. A pal has a scuderia and I have a strad (forsale by coincidence) The scuderia is fast but the strad for me is as quick as I want to go on the road. But the sound of the strad Wow just the best  Worlds apart from the scud, It also feels a bit more raw. Did I mention The noise!!
It's that good my pal with the scud is after a strad aswell now.

I'm starting to lose interest in nice cars, it's so much effort to keep them nice if you want to use them regularly and hard to get rid of worries when you are using them. I'm seriously considering putting mine up and swapping t for 3-4 cheaper toys.
The CS and Scuderia are obviously lovely things but I think in my current state of mind I'd enjoy them even less!

You'd have to be brave to buy a CS at today's prices and actually drive it. It's value would take a $hit if you put even meager miles on it, they are that type of car now.
GT3 RS would be a better bet and less mileage sensitive.
Nice choice!
I would love an Aston Martin V12 Vantage, but it would be hard to see the CSL go...

The only experience I have is of the 360 Challenge Stradale - i had a bit of a road race with one in the Austrian Alps, in my CSL. It didn't seem to be pulling away at all, I ended up holding back a bit. So either the driver was holding back, or the CSL had the measure of it.
As pointed out by another person here, the 360 has a slower ring time than the CSL.
So for pure speed, you might find the 360cs a little disappointing.
That said, it did sound and look fapping fantastic. The wail of the flat plane crank Ferrari V8 and induction noise of the S54B32HP singing together at high revs in the Alps was something pretty special!
Not the best quality, but still a nice video:

Not defending the strad, but Marv your probably a better driver than the chap in the strad was. I've owned both CSL's and strad's and the strad Is defiantly quicker driven right. Regarding the lap time if that was for the 360 the strad is a totally different car. It's only 25kg different in weight to the full challenge car. I've driven 360, 430 and the strad cannot be compared to these. As I said not defending the strad just my 2p worth. I like all different cars, I loved the CSL also and would defiantly have another.

Is your pal selling his Scuderia and replacing it with a Stradale?
and what are you replacing your stradale with? (PM me a link of the ad if you wish)
I think the right decision (investment wise & fun factor) is the Stradale, just going to be difficult to have that as my only car. Made the Scud more tempting. Albeit I don't need to drive in London really, just for pleasure.

You can find 20k mile examples at £160k. Given I would put maybe 2k-3k miles a year, I can live with that for the time being...Depends where the prices go. Make sense? I think I just need to scratch that ferrari itch... (more so than porsche)
Nice choice!

Letting the CSL go is the other issue. I looked at V12 Vantages but none in LHD and I don't think they will hold their value so well...

I've driven already 2 CS's - Just the noise on stock system, wow... So alive this car. Waiting to test a Scuderia and maybe a Testarossa just to see.

Nope, the normal 360 is 10s away from even doing sub 8, so is WAY slower than the CSL and the CS is 6s a lap slower (7:56) with the same Sport Auto driver (Horst von Saurma)....

Well, the CSL was specifically developed for a good Nürburgring time, while ferrari traditionally doesnt really care about that.
The CS has however a better power to weight ratio, so should pull away on the straights. But yeah, the CSL can't be beaten in the fun for price department. Also maintenance rather cheap compared to ferrari, if that is of concern.

On paper, but bear in mind that the CS was produced at a time when Ferrari were over-egging their power figures and there seemed to be a big disparity between customer cars and the cars provided for testing (which were "allegedly" hand picked, fettled and set up to perfection before being passed over for assessment).
Something Chris Harris picked up upon and was banned from being allowed to drive any works Ferraris for revealing this :gayfight: .

I thought that only applied to the "big" ferraris. But yes, if it really had the hp ferrari claims it probably would leave the CSL behind on a highspeed track like the NOS.

Saying that the CS is still one of my dream cars and despite the Scuderia being that much faster, is the one I would pick as well (lottery win allowing :hahaha: :bigcry: ).

Of course everyone on the CSL register forum wants the CS hehe.
No love at all for a testarossa or SLS as a GT car instead?

Heard difficulties with TR parts.
SLS, absolutely, they're mega.....depends how much urge you have for the prancing horse though.
If I was putting £200k into an only car though, I think I'd look at newer options, 570s, AMG GTR etc. for comparison.

Ferrari in Belfast has a mint 360 360cs for sale it's been there a long time so there might be a bit of a wiggle room with the price but knowing Ferrari maybe not. Have experienced the scuderia before my brother in law owned one a while the novelty soon wore of these cars are for track use only. anything other than short road trips it would do your head in.

The problem with nearly all old cars is that the driving experience is going to be a bit (how can I say - yeah, I know: ) "wanky" :bigcry: . The TR might be a visual and aural feast, but given that any modern hot hatch would run rings around it, I think the actual driving enjoyment would wear thin after a short while. For me personally, it's all about the experience from behind the wheel and so it would need to be something great fun and scalpel like (hence the CS being on the "list" and the TR and SLS not even being at the bottom ;) ).
