Modified OEM Muffler

I have been thinking about getting a rear section for the CSL for a long time as I think as glorious as the intake sounds, the rear is missing some noise. I found this clip on youtube:

And loved how it sounds. So I went online and looked up for how he customized his muffler to achieve this. I found a few pics off google and m3cutters, bought myself a used OEM M3 (not CSL) muffler and had the local exhaust shop do the work. Here is the end result:

I love how the car sounds now. Cold start and idle isn't that much louder than stock if at all. When I drive around town normally, the car is just a tad louder than stock. But when I step on it, it sounds angry! No drone at all and I can still hear the induction noise very clearly. Loving this set up!

I am thinking doing this also. With this modified muffler have you felt any torque/power loss?

Also anyone have pictures of the oem csl muffler internals? Would be nice to see what the difference are between the standard and the csl.

Never seen the oem silencer modded

I take it the whole point is keeping the car stock but at the same time modding it.......

why not hang the oem exhaust on your garage wall and buy an SS LWR.

Pound for pound its the Best back box.

If the cops arent such a**holes, trust me i would do SS race. Heck even full SS stepped headers all the way to race muffler... This mod adds a bit of noise while being inconspicuous on the outside if they want to check out the muffler

I cant confirm but i dont think there is any loss in torque.

Totally agree with you, especially if the feds are on your case. :smokin:

I've seen this done a fair few times, the sound of these is pretty good, and a lot of the weight is removed too from the OEM box.

It's quite a cost effective way of having a better sound without the cost of a replacement rear box.

There is a chap on cutters who does it, he's done a lot of M3 / E60 M5 rear boxes, and tbh they sound pretty nice, nice way of getting more noise with OEM looks which some people prefer.
