Hi,
Who else out there still has BMW Insured Warranty on their Cars and if so have you had a nice letter from them in the last week about increases?
nothing much just want to see if this is a wide spread thing before going back to them.

Got a letter a few months back, mine has went up £2/3 per month.
Thanks to the Barnett formula my Scottish CSL's running costs are subsidised by English taxpayers :hahaha:

I still have warranty on mine, it actually went down this year but I suspect that was because it had lapsed previously.

I still have it on mine - I'll keep it up until the next BMW dealer service in the summer, to cover anything major that needs doing. After that I'll be stopping it and going elsewhere for servicing.

You don't need a dealer service to maintain the warranty, just a VAT registered garage.

I thought that was only true for the manufacturer warranty, I thought that the Mondial one specifies that BMW must be used?

If that was the case it isn't anymore, read it on here that you didn't need dealer anymore then phoned to check myself.

Good, I'm glad about that as my main dealer (service) seems pretty clueless on the CSL, the parts guys are great though!

The problem with these cars is, if you do not drive them, when you do they break, then when you do drive them they break.
Only issue is with warranty, anything on the engine and your be waiting a year easy.
Probably best to get a order in for some camshafts, keep them safe and go to a indy for anything else and save yourself the agro of dealing with BMW.

Are the cams now available?

No, my car has been off the road since July last year waiting for them. BMW rejected three batches of cams and now can't give me a date when the next batch is going to be available (which "may" mean they have given up on the original supplier and are seeking an alternative). Up until October last year, I was given dates of when each batch was going to be in, but after each date came and went, I was advised that they had been rejected and the next batch was going to be arriving on x date. However, after the third rejection, they were suddenly unable to provide dates as BMW GmBh were no longer giving the UK that information. So I am currently in limbo, not knowing when my car will be ready.
Got offered a 1 series courtesy car, but told they what I used the CSL for (weekend toy), so wanted something equivalent fun to drive (as in an M-car of some description), but was told this was not possible.

I had thought this situation had been resolved, it is very poor on BMW's part regarding communication. I can (sort of) understand the restriction in supply but when things just go quiet...
Presumably you could fit either standard M3 cams or aftermarket ones but then BMW wouldn't honour the warranty?
I think if this happens to me I'll be cancelling my warranty and going independent.

If I had done this myself with BMW it would have cost £7k, even at BMW's subsidised rates they give to the warranty scheme, it is still costing them £5.5k, so other than the length of time it is taking, I'm quite relieved it is being done under the warranty scheme. They have offered to financially compensate me for the loss of use, but can only give a figure once it has all been done and dusted.

when you say it would have cost £7K .. what do you reckon realistically it would have cost with a good specialist and aftermarket cams ? Anything else need replacing at teh same time ?
I run a warrenty but do wonder what the 'real' cost of these repairs might be and wether we are just being frightened into keeping the warrenty going ( my BMW dealer keeps talking about smg pumps and the potential cost if they go )

Agreed
7K seems outlandish but not surprising given the average daily dealership costs are £25K.

If you just changed the cams and followers, you'd probably get away with a bill under £4K. The problem is, aftermarket cams don't seem to be freely available either, because only Schrick make anything for the CSL at the moment and we're fairly sure Schrick make the OEM ones, aren't we?
The second issue is that you have to take the engine almost entirely apart to do the job, so there's a lot of very tempting "might as wells" to do at the same time. If you're changing the followers why not the springs and if you're changing the springs why not the valve and you'd better change or refurbish the oil pump and perhaps a new head gasket...
So it's probably going to be more than £4K, if you can get hold of standard lift aftermarket cams AND, here's the major taboo, you're happy to own and sell on a CSL with non-standard engine parts. Perhaps I'm overthinking it.

And when they pulled all the engine apart, clips break, hoses need replacing, all of which adds up - but BMW because they are BMW cover under the warranty, as they won't put the engine back together any other way than 100%.
A specialist would probably be able to keep costs down as they would try and re-use many parts that BMW would replace as a matter of course.

Just cancelled mine yesterday, it was ~£77 per month for comprehensive with £250 XS, I decided that with all of the other commitments I have and the fact that I only do about 1500 miles pa meant it was worth the "risk" of not having it......let's see if sods law strikes now the next time I go out!

Personally never spent on warranty, just but my cash into service parts, keep in fine fettle that way , but can only blame myself if something goes goes bang,:smokin:

I binned my warranty this year, only do about 200 miles a year in the car now and it hasn't been to the Ring for about 7 years. I'm just mentally banking the warranty renewal money for the time that I need a repair.
I don't see the point in spending all that money for your car to be sitting at the dealers for a year waiting for cam shafts (or whatever else isn't made anymore).

What are BMW like with modifications with warranty?

I avoid any modifications for this reason but I know many owners that run a few mods and BMW are fine with it.:smokin:

Someone told me that Elms in Cambridge (called Barons now?) are ok with mods?
Mike R

Depends what the mods are. But basically those items that are no longer BMW are not covered by the warranty.
But I suspect what you are really asking is do BMW honour the warranty if the car has any modifications?
Providing the modifications do not directly contribute to the failure, then in my experience it is not an issue.

Yes, BMW very grown-up about mods for these cars. I think they understand that what is done is an improvement / to help enjoy the car rather than to save a few pence. And... you will bring it back for a service too!
Conversely, Land Rover are a complete bunch of C**NTS. It seems if you don't have a LR air freshener they will use it as valid reason not to do warranty work. Also, if the car isn't serviced by them you will find that getting a repair even with their official warranty product is all but impossible.
It is all about getting you in your next Land Rover and I'd argue the CSL has as much offroad capability when it comes to the Evoque and Velar etc..
The Defender, Discovery 3&4 were / are 'proper' (when they work and not snapping cranks ).

I believe Porsche are just as anal as LR if not more so
