Welcome to the forum - are you buying Nick's car then?

Sorry, yes, that wasn't exactly clear. Yes I saw it for sale, went to see it, went back for a drive and paid for it yesterday and today.

Thanks Leins, yes I guess I'll post some pictures of that too!

Hi There, new owner here. Based in Aberdeen, Scotland.

I picked up this 'user' of an CSL as a winter project. The car has done 80K, but the engine only 32K. The exterior is a bit tatty so I'm currently in the process of stripping the trim off in preparation for a paint refresh (Hence this rather non-glamorous shot). Once the outside is done I'll be a steering wheel re-trim away from a tidy CSL. Looking forward to summer already!

Thanks mate, no still having trouble.
A CSL is something I've wanted for years when I had my E30 M3.
But I also see the 1M as a semi reincarnation of the E30 M3

Not for me it's not I'm afraid, with my limited experience of 1Ms and slightly more experience of E30s. I'd love a 1M as a daily, but wouldn't swap my CSL for one. I get the look of them, but they're just not quite raw enough for me, so there would be plenty of other cars out there I'd be buying before the 1M to put in the garage for occasional use

Get out and drive a CSL (if you haven't already), and all will become clear I think. All IM(very biased)O of course!

Fair play, yes I think reading more opinions is swaying me towards the CSL. Still can't fingure out if I'm a black or grey kind of chap though. The grey shows the lines very well but the black is quite menacing and aggressive looking.

A GT3 is still my dream but I think it's a step too far price wise (unless I import a LHD from Europe).
I think a CSL will be what I end up with.
I trawl the P.H classifieds every day, any particular CSL on their that'd you recommend?

Hello. I bought this last week.

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee416/Neutralfanboy/Car/IMAG1772_zps53dhf16l.jpg

It was the second one I'd looked at but it looked well looked after and had a couple of bits done to it like the Supersprint exhaust and AP's so I pulled the trigger. I looked at a 964 and a 1M prior to a CSL but after driving a CSL it was an obvious choice for me.

Hullo all,

Just thought I'd introduce myself. I am a very happy owner of a 2003 SB M3 CSL. 38k miles with a FBMWSH and BMW warranty.

It will be driven and enjoyed! The previous owner kept it immaculate and the car is literally spotless.

Am based in NW London.

Will be doing a photo shoot at some point so will post proper pics and footage of it soon.

Hi all, I've just signed up as I'm looking to get back into a CSL in the near future having owned one back in 2005 for a few years in my twenties. I've missed it ever since, easily the best car I've owned.

Since then I've had a B7 RS4 which has done the trick now I have a little nipper, but that's recently gone after 4 years of ownership and I'm currently on a Range Rover Sport (which the wife obviously prefers to my usual car choice!).

Just found this forum and can hopefully get some good advice on picking up a decent example. I know I've just come over from the dark side, but hey I've had a CSL too so please don't bash me too hard :hahaha:

Also, (sorry if this is the wrong place to post this) if anyone private is currently considering selling and looking for a 4x4, I'm open to doing some kind of exchange +/- cash for my Rangie, it's on PH at the mo at £36K, 2011 Black HSE Luxury, just under 34K miles, Autobiography styling, every conceivable option, I can PM the advert link if that may be of interest to anyone.

Nice to meet you all.

Thanks,

Al

Insurance will be a little less this time around!!!!

hehe, yeah I do recall it stinging back then, but after the test-drive I kind of put the little things like insurance costs behind me and got my deposit down the same day...!

Actually now I think about it, I remember it went back to the dealers twice in as many months of owning it for one problem or another (engine light). Both times they turned up with a low loader and they had to get additional planks out to decrease the initial incline onto the ramp to avoid wrecking the front splitters! I was right there watching them like a paranoid hawk... Glad it had the main dealer warranty at the time.

I love the look of the SG so will probably stick with that colour again, but to be honest there not many available in either colour at the moment so it depends what comes up. I'm sure more will become available when the summer months pass as this time of year is of course when most guys want to keep hold of their toys.

Hey Everyone,

I'm a new member of the forum and not yet an owner.

I found a CSL for sale and will be going to see it in person in the coming days.

Would appreciate some help/tips on what to look for, most importantly to make sure it's an original CSL and not a regular E46 M3 with swapped parts..

Perhaps something in the VIN that identifies the car as a CSL?

Appreciate any help as I am new to the CSL and M Power world.

Thanks,

Welcome to the register!!

The V5 will specify the car as a CSL so easy to confirm its an authentic car.

Buy on condition not mileage

Look out for consistent servicings as some of the low mileage garage queens often have big gaps between oil changes.

BMW Service History is great to have but there are plenty of Indie Specialists worthy to stamp the book.

Low mileage examples fetch big bucks....IMO a higher mileage example is a better choice if you intend to use the car moderately with the odd track day thrown in.

Welcome Maz.

The suspension turrets have a VIN and other info on it, including production date and model etc, which will say M3 CSL.

If a car has got all that, plus the recaro's, airbox, wheels, bumpers, roof etc and is still a fake, I'd like to see it !

Having said that, i just remembered someone has built that manual blue M3 from the ground up with almost every part http://www.cslregister.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10736 in fact you can see the turret sticker in the pics, won't say CSL on that one.

Thanks for the support and warm welcome folks.

Good News:
I went to view the car and ran the VIN on a decoder site and everything checks out! She's the real deal! Owner took me for a spin and she seemed to run really smooth.. No rattles or squeaks on bumps or holes as well as engine sounded good and shifts were smooth (considering SMG).

Bad News:
No service history as well as wear and tear on the car include small dings (one with rust) as well as extensively scratched rims.

Long story short, I am in a country where cars like these are not too common and as a matter of fact this might be the only CSL here. It was imported from new from Germany but not bought through the dealer here. Current owner/seller bought it from its first owner just 2 months ago and it had apparently been stored for almost 8 years. The BMW dealership has little information on the car since they switched systems in 2014 and all data before then is in archives somewhere, but they said I'm welcome to bring the car in for a check up (note they don't have a list of checks they'd do, I would have to point out specific things I need checked and will be billed hourly accordingly).

That said, any advice on how I should proceed? What would I need the dealer to look into? Engine + transmission? Are there any known issues with these cars that I should be aware of? Car has 71k kms and from the ride along I received seemed to run smooth (even AC blew cold).

Had this been a normal car or a simple e46 I would've stayed clear due to the lack of service history.. However, we all know the true value of these machines and how rare they are to come by, she's worth the trouble!

Appreciate your help guys!

Not to burst your bubble - but personally I'd walk away.

No service history with a spurious origin, can't get much worse!
A good service history is a pre-requisite when it comes to purchasing a CSL even more so than the standard M3, IMO.

If it's cheap walk away, there are a few European CSL's which are not all they seem - be careful - don't let your heart rule your head! ;)

It can, it can mean no CSL at all if there are no other choices. So first place to start is to consider what the car is worth. And then offer that if interested.

Clearly this isn't the type of CSL that you're going to stuff in a carcoon and watch appreciate, it's a driver. If it's a genuine CSL and all the CSL bits are present and correct then why not go for it. No service history isn't great but if you can give it a good looking over, make sure it drives fine and it doesn't sound like a bag of bolts then why not? If the price is right I'd say go for it. You can have a bit of fun bringing it back up to scratch.

Stumpy
31-07-2015, 10:46 PM
It will always have a sketchy history so its value will always reflect that fact, or certainly would if I was ever looking at it.

But... That may not be an issue at all especially if you're going to be its last owner! Right price and condition looks good then buy it. You'll always regret it if you don't!

If you perform a thorough pre-purchase check and go over the little imperfections when you own it, It will only appreciate and being possibly the only example in your country will always make it valuable and collectable.

But, personal advice; do not care about the car's value, depreciation, people's view etc. Just drive and own it as you wish !
One day If you need to sell it, take the potential owner for a drive and that will take care of the sale :)

Hello, good morning, afternoon, evening to all , names Raj.

I've just joined as i met two CSL owners over the weekend and they ignited my passion for the CSL and they were absolute class gents.

Also saw a gaggle of CSLs at the Sunday Service.

They were Paul (sp2c ) and Prem (dont know his username ).

I met Prem on a crazy tunnel run the day before in his pristine CSL and i was literally drooling crazily over Paul's GT2 :smt055 did not even know it was his car and started talking like a crazily obsessed car nerd over his beauty.

I have met a few people with CSL's before back when i used to track the car ... many years ago, now its dormant most of the year and just gets abused in the summer months.... :hahaha: Ive had a fair few M3s... and nearly did part with the CSL but could not carry through...literally got pains in my chest :bigcry:

a few of the memorable people i met during the CSL years were Angus (RIP bud) Steve , John Thorne, AJ and Roy, don't know if they are on here (they probably forgot me, im the chubby brown indian ! )... but yeah be nice to learn some knowledge and meet some like minded people.

Owned my Cecil for 11 years and its bought me nothing but Joy, headache, more joy and a lot of memories, i've met a lot of great people too and some have become friends.

Anyways do apologize for the rambling i'm getting old...

hope to meet a few of you at some point .

and lastly its nice to finally meet people who do not ask

"is that a real M3 ?"

"is this one of those CLS S? " ( the amount of times i hear that :hahaha: )

Hi All,

Ive just donated, I bought Houlbt's/Kenny's CSL.
Hat's off to those two as the car is mint, handles and sounds
absolutely amazing!

Im still smiling from last nights blast, blipping and farting around the back roads.
I got out the car closed the door, then wanted to go for another blast.
The E46 M3 doesnt have that effect.

Thanks for the Advice for CCI Insurance, got it for £600 per year.

Want to try and get to the nurburgring in the future and do some track days.

Great site, no doubt ill see some of you soon.

The car lived in Huntingdon for a while, then my friend moved to Docklands and the CSL was parked in the underground carpark along with a Z1. He then moved to Camden and parked the CSL on the street, not using it very often. I bought the Z1 and rescued it from the underground carpark and bought the CSL a few weeks later.

The front bumper is smashed, someone reversed into the car whilst parked, as said previously the car needs some cosmetic TLC and is going for a repaint in a few weeks time to restore it to it's former glory

The car has full BMW history with lots of invoices so has been cared for mechanically.

Red Z1 ? Wondered where that had gone !!

Morning all,

Just thought I'd say hello, owned my CSL since November but only had the opportunity to use her a couple of times. Feels a very special car and I really enjoy the gearbox as it gives the car some real character over and above the benign modern stuff!! (I am a real modern classic fan though, new stuff all feels the same!)

Hi all,

After a winter wait to sell a convertible and months trawling the classified. I finally picked a car up yesterday. I was originally after a black one, but was offered a fantastic SG from a forum member.
The drive home was mostly dual carriageway and motorway, but I got a good feel for the gearbox which I really like.it didn't sound too bad either;-)
I'm based in the south west, so if anyone would like to meet up I'm not far from Taunton.

Cheers,

James.

Hello all,

After lurking on the forum for a number of years I joined last year and purchased my CSL recently.

It's an SG in LHD with 32000 Miles, prefer the cars to be as originally intended and works well for the Europe trips.

I have a list of a few small things to do but overall very happy with it. :))

Look forward to some meets.

Hi guys,

Hope all are well.

I'm now a CSL owner and very impressed with everything so far.
(FBMWSH, 69k, silver grey, BMW renewed subframe, BMW warranty extended etc)

Everything from the noise, handling and weight seems very raw and driver focused.

So many other great cars out there in that price range like the new M4/M3, GTR and 997.2 etc but the CSL in my opinion has a mechanical essence about it that ticks all the boxes.

Few bits and bobs to sort out on the car before I'm 100% but I'm happy enough just looking at it.

Thanks for your time and look forward to any future meets (or any local London/Kent owners)

Cheers.

Hi All,
Just dropping a quick line to say “a big hello” to the forum. I’ve just bought myself a nice clean low mileage CSL and can’t wait for it to arrive!

Having been a big fan of the standard S54 engine, after buying a Z3M coupe a few years ago, I simply can’t wait to really test out the CSL variant’s extra power and that induction noise! The cars handling is just phenomenal and I’ve already pencilled in a road trip up to the West coast of Scotland to blast along the amazing winding roads.

I thought I’d missed the boat with the CSL as prices have rocketed, but some good fortune has enabled me to satisfy a teenage boys dream. I’ve always been a BMW nut and the CSL along with my Z3M coupe and a recently purchased E39 M5, mean my fantasy drives are ticked off!

I did toy with the idea of a Porsche 997 GTS, as like the CSL they are a hoot to drive and possibly a future classic, but I’m just not a Porker type of guy, and I was so taken by the CSL visually when I viewed it at the dealers that I didn’t even realise it was parked right next to a £2m+ Ferrari Enzo! I’ll send more details and some pic’s of the car when it arrives near the end of the month. The car has had a number of previous owners so it will more than likely be known to others.

I’ve been using the Z Coupe forum for a few years and the info, members etc are great! I’m sure CSLRegister will be just as good and I look forward to becoming an active member.
Thanks
Chris

After the longest month of my life I finally took delivery of the car yesterday! And guess what.....I've only gone a broken it already!:banghead:

Looks like a sensor fault as both the DSC and handbrake warning lights are showing, and based on the sideways action in the rain yesterday the traction control was definitely disengaged!

Not that surprising considering the car has only done about 500 miles over the last five years, and had its legs stretched yesterday, but I need to get it sorted before I head off on my Scotland road trip next weekend as the Highland roads + almost certain rain + no traction control = a big mess!

Gremlins aside I couldn't wipe the smile of my face yesterday. This is so far removed from a stock E46 M3 and indeed my Z3M Coupe. It really is an awesome machine, but the best part is the noise! Its so addictive!

Still trying to get to grips with the SMG box. Thankfully its a weekend toy rather than a daily driver as I'm not sure I could live with it, but it works a treat when you use the car as BMW intended!

Hi Chris,

Sounds like you had fun despite the hiccups ;)

Probably a faulty wheel speed sensor, but if it doesn't return all is good.
As for SMG you will learn to drive it, but it needs time. It took me a couple thousand miles until i came to grips with it. Basicly you need to drive it just like a manual and give it a bit of gas on the downshifts if you aren't driving fast. It smoothes out the shift.
Apart from the 2 to 1 shift.. that i never manage to get smooth :hahaha:

My second weekend of enjoying the CSL and fall more in love with this car every time I get behind the wheel!

I had planned on going up to the Scottish Highlands to see some family, but as the only place in the whole of the UK with rain forecast was the West Coast I thought better of it, but still managed to spend most of the weekend with the biggest grin on my face!

Still getting used to the SMG box, its getting easier, but the car overall is just immense. The handling is near perfect, the noise is soooooo addictive!

Spent some time on the windy roads which suits the car perfectly. Straight line speed is perhaps not that epic compared to more modern cars I've driven, but the handling, OMG I'm in love!

I still get a boy hood twinge in my pants when I look at the car. Aesthetically is just works from every angle. It looks aggressive without being over the top. Spent ages washing it, much to the missus frustration!

I pay mine monthly, but it is the full warranty for everything - which has been going since the factory warranty expired. Despite the number of years I have been paying for it, I wouldn't be without it.

£793 sounds very good (unless it is just for the limited version)?

I stopped mine at the end of last year after having the SMG actuator replaced as my last claim.

My car's only doing 1-2K a year now, so I'm planning to relax the service schedule a bit now that I don't have to keep it up for warranty compliance. I'm hoping the savings from that plus the warranty will add up to more than pay for the next fucking enormous bill that it lands me with :)

I joined not having a CSL. I have 2002 "regular" M3, 2005 ZCP (Interlagos/Cinnamon, SMG2, Slicktop), and recently purchased 2005 "regular" M3 that I want to convert as close to OEM CSL as possible.
Already had a great read here: http://www.cslregister.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13554
