Thought all dealer cars had been pre-bought?
How'd he manage to test drive one? Cancelled order?

This.

Porsche made me write a letter of intent to express my interest and get on the reserve list. They insisted that this be written and sent to them on paper, not on email, despite that it makes zero difference from a contractual perspective and a letter of intent is not legally binding anyway (I know - I'm a lawyer). It was just a bit of theatre. Their strategy of making unobtainable limited edition runs in an attempt to create bulletproof residuals and hence elevate the brand has a critical flaw - it disenfranchises the everyman buyer for a car like the GT4. When considered in conjunction with modern finance packages, the prices of almost any Porsche bar the 918 are now within the reach of many performance car enthusiasts, but the company wants to stifle supply. That, combined with the unfortunate manner of their 'sales' people, has put me off the brand, despite previously owning a 2S and trying to order GT3 and GT4.

So I'm sticking with BMW or other brands (12C's are looking cheap at the moment...).

Agree I was in Porsche again yesterday. Sales guy was an elitist twonk. Looking at Cayman GTS as they wouldn't sell me a GT4. Finance rate is crap at 9.7% APR. When challenged they said that they aren't run of the mill like BMW blah blah blah. We parted with me put off the brand due to the arrogance

I have to say Porsche do have something right to keep their residuals up on the GT series cars, the GT4 is fetching silly money over list price just because it's completely unavailable, I think JZM have one...it's gorgeous, but not at £104k!

I guess the problem is that the speculators have got in straight away with the GT4 , which means that there's probably loads of examples out there which won't get enjoyed properly or get into the hands of driving enthusiasts and it'll remain that way if the inflated prices continue.

thing with the GT4 is, it is the bigger engined GT fettled cayman loads of Pork fans have been waiting for the last 10 years. Much like another CSL, if it were to be released at 70k. That's surely another 100+ page thread in the making.

The parallels are there except perhaps even more so in the Gt4

you get the bigger engine, clubsport pack, Gt3 brakes, gt3 front suspension, bespoke rear suspension, lightweight flywheel, solo manuel GT car and bespoke aero package all for the entry price of 70k (when you factor in 5k for clubsport + buckets). Other than the Gt3 engine (but you get to row gears), you have it all.

The GT3 retails for 101k but punters have it at 130k. The 911 R (tbc) will have production of less than 1k worldwide and have an astronomical price tag. Sure, you get the Gt3 engine AND the manuel but at what price? Tell me in the porsche world of NEW/nearly new cars, what else comes close?

Unless you start flipping the back-catalog of pork hits, which are getting eye wateringly expensive as well, what's out there? This is a biased opinion but unless the older GT cars start coming down in price, the Gt4 will stay at 100k easily. In short, yes supply is an issue but it is not expensive at 100k (in comparison with what else porsche is offering)...you tried configuring a new manuel 911 carrera S?

I'm hoping that BMW get it right with the M2. That's going to be limited numbers too though...

While I was very impressed with the M4, it's not really a Cayman rival, more of an alternative to the 911.

I had the same problem, really wanted a GT4 outright purchase they were just not interested in selling one to me. I must have called 20 dealers.

I think they were all reserved for loyal customer.

I have since tried for a 911R, LOI is in but not heard anything. :banghead:

I read that the standard M2 isn't going to be limited?

I would take one over an M4 though i have to say.

In a couple of weeks i'll take delivery of my baby. I'll post some pics and opinion of course.

A small about the weight in comparison with the M4.

BMW M4: 1,612 Kg

Cayman GT4: 1,340 Kg

Best

:)

khooni
03-01-2016, 08:56 AM
yeah but i believe the 1340kg is achieved with no roll cage/pccb/buckets/lithium battery/no ac/no stereo/no other lardy options. no magazine has come close to achieving that mostly are 1400kg.

I'm gonna be weighing mine at the local track when i get a chance. I think anything under 1380kg is an achievement.

the CSL came in 1380kg fully stripped with a full tank + a full roll cage. definitely interested in seeing what my GT4 weighs

alexk
03-01-2016, 10:32 AM
For the record the 991 GT3 RS is much heavier than quoted by Porsche - epic fail.

Official weight : 1420 kg Measured weight : 1540 kg , full 90 l tank .

GT3 had been measured at 1520 kg but with 65 l tank

It's cool to quote a car 120kg lighter than reality. It's automatically a lightweight special ;)

Marv968

That's strange, Porsche used to quote their car weights pretty much spot on :smt087

same problem with McLaren/Ferrari/Lamborghini

u need to spec the totally stripped version, full of carbon fibre in order to hit that weight.

I wonder how is it for the M4?

The M4 is as claimed.
Thats the irony in my opinion.
The world believes the M4 is very heavy. Well its not...

A 991 GT3 is 1550kg (I assume without cage) which is 50kgs less than an M4.
But its all about perception. Quote 1400kg and everyone thinks its light.

I would love to see how heavy is the cayman gt4.
I bet its 1450kgs.

Yeah but Porsche seems to have put the weight on in the right places. Here in Wales with dry roads the Cayman seems to corner 10-15 miles per hour faster than an M4. Good power to weight ratio is nothing without traction which the M4 seems to be lacking. It must corner 25 mph slower than a GTR on Litchfield suspension on the higher speed 100+ corners.

Alex,

even though weight is important. it is not the end all. the M4 just isn't as polished and doesn't incite excitement like a porsche GT product. I mean it isn't even as good as the older cayman R.

Porsche just seems to tune it's products such that everything is in sync and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. GT products ramp up the excitement even more. from steering feel to suspension tuning to how everything falls to hand, it's just a well judged product. No one else does it as well.

The CSL is the exception rather than the norm for BMW M. IMO, it is as focused as my RS.

Happy New Year all!

Had mine for just over a month now. So far feels every bit as good as the reviews say. Long time since I had my GT3 but the GT4 definitely feels a similar driving experience. Not really missed the CSL tbh, but have to say it was a very good car by BMW standards... Unfortunately BMW don't make cars like the CSL / GT3 anymore. Had a 1M for 6months but got bored of it. Driven an M4 and again felt it was just too boring. I do like the look of the M4's though. Not holding much hope for the M2 either - I just don't like the modern turbo BMW's.

Cheers guys

Looking forward to some better weather - It's on Cup 2's, which seem <touch's wood> better than the original Cup's. Engine sound is very satisfying - actually quite loud inside the cabin, and possibly as loud as the GT3 was. It's on the corners though where it really makes you smile.

In the picture of the interior: Is that false yellow stiching around the steering column shroud?

You can spec that part to be covered in leather and if you have the contrast stitching it gets the same treatment as everywhere else
