Quick quezzie?

Is there a recognised Helicoil Kit for a Front Hub thread repair?

Or is it as I suspect a new item?

my hubs have never been changed and ive done a few as well. Is it the studs that cause it?

Andy

had a wheel stud that refused to torque up @ Spa in October

removed the stud to find the hub thread still on the end of the stud :banghead:

just wanted advice on whether a heli-coil repair would be up to it.

Just change it. Front hub and wheel bearing.

Helicoil should be more than up to it, if done well it will be more durable than the original thread.

My thoughts exactly

A good quality Irwin kit should be A1

Do you know what thread it is? We have dozens of helicoil sets (mainly smaller threads though), I can have a looksee as we may have a tap and insert tool.

I'll have to check but I think it's around 13mm

12 x 1.5

I will have a look tomorrow, shame it's a fine pitch as more chance of having m12x1.75

Gone to studs on hub easier to put wheels on, then just carry spare nuts if needed.

never quite understood the "easier to put wheels on" arguement........never had a problem putting them on..

Agree studs mean no need for change in bolt length with different spacers and wheels

Ahh i see, sounds like a new hub would be in order especially under loads at Spa?

Surprisingly found an M12x1.5 insert tool, tap and drill at work today. No inserts though. You are welcome to borrow them. I wouldn't suggest doing it by hand though, ideally need a manual mill or pillar drill at least. Or you can send me the hub and I can do it unless you decide to buy new. Jim.

Fit a new hub and bearing,,,one day youll be doing a wheel change and the helicoil will be poking its nose out and youll fit a hub anyway....just do it now.

With Spa looming I've actually managed to repair my stripped front hub with a V-Coil helicoil repair kit.

the irony of this fix is that the stone/dust shield had split around the top securing bolt

penny washer bodge later and all's well.

front hub will have to be pulled to replace the shield!!!!!! :banghead:

so I'm back to square one.

I've been putting on bigger and bigger washers for two years every time the rattle returns.

Got Simpsons to swap all bearings this winter and did the shields at the same time.
