View Full Version : Insurance value - Closes eyes, throws dart.

A real first world problem I guess but what does one insure a CSL for these days? Particularly one that has actually been used, and does not have a perfect history.

My cover runs out in a few days and I'm seriously considering going for a agreed value as prices these days have gone a bit daft. So. What's a 86K mile SG CSL worth these day?

Mine no longer has a full BMW service history and does not have the original engine. I guess this knocks the value down......But but the engine that was fitted 20k ago still only has ~37K on it. Does that push the value back up?

Also the car is due back from Redish today after having an extended rear end refurbishment. All new bushings, powder coated axle carrier, all corrosion taken care off right out to the rear arches, and of course the strengthening work done. Does that push the value up?

Also last winter it had a pillar down respray, with all carbon fibre bits refurbed. New front wings, corrosion taken care of, re-trimmed steering wheel. Oh, and it also has Alcons on the front.

In short, I always think of my CSL as a bit of a shaggy dog. Probably because it was like that when I picked it up. But in reality, when I look at it now, it's probably fresher than a lot of less leggy examples. Does mid 30's seem reasonable? Too high, too low? I'm kind of clueless and the regular classifieds give little guidance these days.

I would say mid 30's is spot on really

I know you say its been nip and tucked here and there but the insurance company doesn't know that and neither would a prospective buyer anyhow most cars have seen a bit of paint in there time.

all I would say is push your luck with the evaluation they can only say no but you might be surprised

I managed to ask for an extra 10k from the year before on my 635 csi and they agreed it

Always on the high side here, but then prices catch up leaving it "undervalued"

Mine's on 40k more than yours and I've been offered (without hesitation) £30k twice recently, which leads me to think it's worth a little more than that. If I were to list it for sale (not that I'm planning to) I'd probably go for £35k and see what happened. This leads me to think yours is worth high 30s. Did the 90k one on here sell for £42k?

I see your point but does this not mean my premium is good to shoot sky high?

Do you track it, I use Competition Car Insurance they give you track day cover too. :thumbs:
Mines not on a value one only done 21k not sure what its worth.

I do track it, not heavily, or frequently. Two maybe three times a year. I am with CCC at the moment but I hear a lot of people mentioning classicline.

I presume you're referring to my immaculate Cecil :smt055 ;) and no it didn't sell yet :whistle: as I wouldn't budge of my asking price, having refused offers of £35K, £38K & £39K point blank.
BTW my little "Garage Queen" :gayfight: is currently valued with my insurers (Classic Line) at (£42K) :smokin: and I would struggle to find another SG in the equivalent condition and impeccable provenance of mine at that price, regardless of mileage.

And THAT is the exact way id sell mine also. (If it were for sale)
Price it on the high side, if it sells great :beer:. If it doesn't go you still have a car that you love tucked up in the garage for a nice weekend blast :smokin:

Mines done 21k too, insurance is due next month with CCI, I'm going to get a valuation from Munich legends (£35) and all you do is send them loads of photos

Top advice from "oop north"

Classic Line are pretty accommodating on agreed values

I'm due for renewal in March and will be after a considerable hyke in agreed value.

Went with Classicline in the end. Agreed value of £40k.

The car came back from Redish yesterday and I took it for a final, pre-hibernation run this morning. What a special car the CSL is. Hope I never have cause to use the insurance in anger.

I had fair bit of work done but to summarise the major work.

Extended rear end strip down. So everything out to, and including, the wheel arches cleaned up and all corrosion taken care of. Strengthening plates fitted and BMW structural foam injected. Rear end re-painted & undersealed.

Rear end reassembled with powder subframe, new diff & subframe bushes. New rear brake lines. New drive line coupling bush plus any joints with play (front or rear) replaced.

My undercarriage now looks like this.

I can't fault the Redish experience. They treat your car like it's their own and that's the best compliment I can give. They stay in constant contact, feed you plenty of pictures and do great quality work.

I know what BMW charge to do just the boot floor and the Redish route gets you far more for the same money. Can't recommend them enough. The hardest thing is deciding where to tell them to stop.

Tempted to try Reddish for some work in the spring.
