View Full Version : Exciting carbon news!

Given my car is off the road waiting for the cams from BMW (a wait which has been on-going since the end of July :banghead: ), I thought I would take the opportunity to get my guy to do some more carbon bits, so the Vorsteiner front splitter is going to be replicated (but in proper 1 x 1 pre-preg carbon and not the shonky carbon skin over glass fibre mix that is the Vorsteiner item). He also has the strut brace as a feasibility study - not sure if that would be a bit OTT - what are people's views?

But look what also fits in the Autoclave :supz: :
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0703/MikeR/CSL%20stuff/269D2E0A-C915-4A9F-8909-A1B5DF888D64_zpsw8fako0y.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/MikeR/media/CSL%20stuff/269D2E0A-C915-4A9F-8909-A1B5DF888D64_zpsw8fako0y.jpg.html)

So the plan will be to take a mold of that as well and we will then have the ability to produce EXACT replicas (indistinguishable from the BMW items) of the bumper for considerably less than BMW charge. I appreciate that these are not likely to be required just yet, but if the bumpers go the same way as the roof, then at least the mold will be ready and waiting :).

In addition, the rear centre consoles go in to production this week :). These are going to be complete replacement items for the OE items (not covers), will not require any exchange and will allow you to keep your original one (if it hasn't yet cracked :bigcry: ) in pristine condition, as these are now £1,025 from BMW :smt103 . Being full carbon (NOT carbon skin over glass-fibre), not only are they stronger anyway, but they will be additionally reinforced around the area where the OE plastic ones usually crack, to ensure that the carbon ones can allow the use of the folding seat arrangement without damaging them. All you will have to do is swap over the trim pieces (which are still available new from BMW separately from the plastic console if your ones are manky, but the plastic console is not available without the trim pieces - go figure :bigcry: ). For anyone concerned, we have a genuine front centre console that is being used to ensure that the curing process gives the exact same finish as the OE ones and match in every regard (as will be evidenced by the photos).

The price will be £495 + £10 delivery (within the UK) for the first 10. Again, these will only be available to forum members and £10 from the sale of each one will go to help running the site :). As soon as the first one is done, I will of course post up pictures. However, they will be of similar quality to the flippers (as in better than OE ones).

A bit off topic and I have emailed our resident carbon guy....
I've got a knackered plastic dash from a Clio cup. Looking for a fibre glass or carbon copy getting made up as a replacement. Is it something your guy can do? If so what sort of money?

It's just a thin plastic trim, i would like it with no pod opening.
Usual upside down photo...

Everything can be done - but obviously it is whether or not if it is economically viable. I've asked the question, but I don't think he has time to do one offs.

Not something we intend to do at the moment.

Really want to just do CSL specific items to an OE equivalent or better standard.

Might come at a later date (if the demand is there), but not in the immediate future.

The things that are being done / have been done are:

1. Flippers (available).
2. Rear centre console (imminent).
3. Strut brace (before end of year).
4. Vorsteiner front lip (before end of year).
5. Front bumper (next year).

Mike, have you had any news on the cams? Mine went down about the same time, one cam was available immediately and the second thankfully came in yesterday. Car is back with them now and should be ready Monday :-). This was a few days after I was told it would be sometime in 2016 so was shocked when it was all of a sudden available?

Here are the first pictures of the finished rear centre console - I have put them up against a genuine front centre console so you can see that it matches perfectly  :). Please note that these are my original trim pieces and that they will not be supplied with them (the original ones are easy to remove and if yours aren't up to scratch, BMW do sell these separately). This one will be offered in the order that people expressed and interest, it will then take another 5-7 days to make the next one and so on. If you are genuinely interested in one, then drop me a PM. In the meantime, I will be contacting the people who have expressed an interest.

As a nice little finishing touch, we have made this appear to be a genuine BMW part (sharing the OE part number, but with some additional characters to denote it's carbon fibre material). However, that is optional :).

I forgot to reiterate that these have not only been reinforced where they normally crack, but due to their carbon construction are significantly stronger anyway. I have been told they should be actually able to take the weight of an adult standing on them, however that is not something I have wanted to confirm LOL.

I don't think you can really compare the two :blalalala:.

This isn't an overlayed cosmetic item on the original, but a complete replacement pre-preg carbon part to the same quality (if not better  ) than the original interior items.

Knowing the weaknesses of the original item, it has also been reinforced in those specific points to ensure that it can take the weight of heavy items being placed on the seat backs when the seats are folded - so not only is it nicer to look at than the black plastic items, it is also more practical ;).

Hi Chris,
These are readily available, as the previous owner fitted some on my car. They are much better than the OE items, as they are larger (this is the best photo I have):

Okay, my car is finally coming back soon (got an email yesterday to say cams are on their way :supz: ), so will take a set off and send them to be molded. Can you confirm that they are identical for each seat (as in passenger and driver's set are identical)?

No they are sided unfortunately! There's two pieces to each seat, the L shaped piece held in by three hex bolts and another rail trim piece that sits just under it held in by two hex bolts.

I noticed the plastic around the bolt holes, on the side trim for the seats which NZ_M3 refers to is rather fragile too!

Some CF versions of these would look superb and resolve the fragility issue  I'd certainly be interested in buying a couple.

Good to hear cams are on the way Mike...hopefully you'll have your car right back in time for some decent weather :-D

Hello Mike,

I have finally received the carbon fiber console and I just installed it.

I am very happy with it; thank you again!

The CSL should have come this way from factory.

Kind regards,
Alex

The mold for the Vorsteiner will be ready this week, will be £400 + delivery if anyone is interested :).

The strut brace will be done at the same time, but we will be having to make prototype to make sure that they have at least the same kind of weight deflection as the original alloy item.

Interested in making a new rocker cover for us? This is mine but the weave is going in the wrong direction. :bigcry:

Mike

Can your man replicate the plastic trim piece that goes on the side the front seats (the "L" shaped piece, plus the little plastic bit that bolts to the seat sliders (part no.3 seen in photo below)

http://medias.motorsport-passion.com/images_monthly_07_2013/img-565549-1-MTM2ODI4X3A=.png

If so and well priced I'd be interested in a pair. The stock OEM pricing for these plastic bits are just a bit over the top.

I've finally got my car back .

I have tried to get the lever off to remove the trim panels to send to my carbon guy, but am scared to force it in case I break anything (especially as you have confirmed the extreme cost of these parts :bigcry: ). Do you have any suggestions on how to best remove this?

Thanks for that - although it doesn't seem to show explain how the lever is held in.

Anyone removed theirs to clarify?

Is there a screw holding it in place or does this thread refer to the three screws per side that hold the plastic cover in situ?

If you pull the lever out slightly you can see there is a small allen key screw (2mm?) on the top. Once you remove that screw the handle slides right off.

The rest of the trim is very simple.

Cheers.

It is almost impossible to remove that screw without stripping the hex key slot. If you do, look here for replacement - see bottom of thread.

http://www.cslregister.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13142

Also The trim has a slight lip that slots into the seat frame. I find the best way to take that trim off is to lift it into the seats first then twist the top part slightly to get it off the seat back portion where it sits just over the mechanism but not all the way, then pull down on the bottom to get the trim out of the bottom shell.

It's very hard to describe but there is one particular angle that the trim will come out without scratching the seat coating.

Just have a fiddle with it and have some thin hard cardboard around to slot in between the seat back. To prevent damage. Hope that helps!

The driver's side one came out no bother, but the passenger side someone had already tried to remove (unsuccessfully) and it was already stripped and had to be persuaded out with a drill :bigcry:.

The panels came off no bother (once I had figured out the piece of felt that was glued to the seat and the panel wasn't another hidden screw :bigcry: - you forgot to mention that :blalalala: ) and I fitted one back to make sure it was easy (more difficult than removing but no issues other than being careful not to mark the seat).

Thanks for that Mark - PM sent :).

A question to someone who has replaced the center console one with the carbon ones.... when you remove the Alantara padding pieces, how do you pull the plastic pins out that hold the alcantara bits to the console? Brute force or is there a simpler way? Can the pins be replaced afterwards, or are they sort of built into the alcantara pieces?

They are built into the alcantara and can just be PUSHED out from underneath (rather than pull out from the top) and pushed back in. I did this to mine and they went back in no problem and did not break or suffer any issues :).

If you pulled them off (oh er :bigcry: ), you might distort the cushions as I don't know how rigid they are, hence the advice to push them out from underneath :).

Cheers Mike,

Yep, pushing them through from below makes sense. They seem so bloody fixed in there thought that I thought this alone may break something.

Out of curiosity, would you say your carbon console is strong enough to be sat on - not that there is a middle belt, but I was thinking that often if a person gets in the back, they tend to first lean in and put their weight on the console. Would the carbon stand up to this?

Thanks

In the same way that the standard ones have not been designed to be sat on, neither have the carbon ones. However, they have been beefed up to take several times the weight of the standard one, and I "think" they would take the weight of a child / small person standing on them. Saying that, I would not really want to test one to destruction just to see.

But, if this was really important to you, for an extra £50 it could be beefed up so that it could take the weight of an adult no problem - if you felt that was a necessary requirement. Personally I would just advise people getting into the back to be a bit more careful :hahaha:.

Hi Gav,
Just waiting for my carbon guy's mold guy to finish them - sadly he is swamped as well, so is taking a lot longer than I anticipated.

However, the strut brace mold is done, so one of these will be produced soon (with a CSL logo embossed in it :) ).

Have chased for an update and will post back as soon as I get this :).

All the parts previously made are still available, all the parts in the pipeline are still ongoing, but other projects have meant that these have taken a back seat.

The molds for the seat plastics are done, but none made as yet (lack of time for above reason).

Part of the reason for the drop off is that I wasn’t sure anyone else was still interested?

Superb - thanks for that Mark :).

Note the (genuine) front centre console images are there only to show you how good a match it is - it is only the rear centre console that is made :).

The sticker even makes it look like a genuine BMW part, which no doubt will confuse people in years to come ;).

Where there are pictures of two flippers, the genuine one can be distinguished by the white mold releasing compound on it, the other is the new one :).

I may also be interested in a strut brace if you have completed development.

I see your comment re long lead times but I guess it’s the same as Sports Rolexes, excruciatingly long but worth the wait in the end.
