After six fantastic years of ownership and 24,000 incredible miles on some of Europe's finest roads, the time has come (after much deliberation) to find a new custodial for my beloved Cecil. This has not been an easy decision however due to a comical lack of use (1600 miles in the past three years, since the 10th Anniversary Munich Euro trip) and the ever decreasing availability of spare time, I feel the time has come to find a new home for DU53 VAY as it's a terrible waste of an incredibly talented Road/Track car, now sitting in my garage pretending to be a "Garage Queen" and no longer being used properly as 'M' division Gods intended.

I've owned it since 2009 and I've been a CSLR member since that time. DU53 VAY is a well know car on CSLR as the 3 previous owners to me were also CSLR members. During my 6 years of ownership it's always been my other car, the weekend toy and it has always been kept in a well ventilated, dry garage overnight, in bad weather and when not being used, especially during the long winter months, when it hibernates until the following spring. This kind of regime has paid off and preserved this car very well with all the rubber window seals, rubber hoses, electrical wiring, paint work, carbon roof, etc. not having been exposed to the outside elements, bad weather and contrasting temperatures. As a result it still retaining a soft & supple feel to it all, that of a much younger car. There are no signs of rust, neither on the body or the chassis. No fluid leaks from any of the main mechanical components and everything is bone dry.

Ideally I'm looking for a like minded CSL enthusiast who will appreciate the exceptional condition & impeccable service history of my CSL, above everything else. Someone who will continue to cherish this wonderful car in the way it's been accustom to in the past 6 + years and enjoy driving it more than I'm currently able to, due to before mentioned time restraints.

I'm a strong believer in preventative maintenance and aim to fix anything that may need doing sooner rather then wait for it to brake, money no object. Sometimes I'll change parts for the sake of fitting New to replace slightly old, for peace of my own mind. In addition to the BMW scheduled servicing (which I've always done according to time, not mileage) I've had a number of Interim oil & filter changes, always using the recommended Castrol EDGE TWS Motor-sport SEA 10W-60 approved oil & genuine OEM oil filters.
At 84,000 miles I asked our "CSL Guru" Gareth to perform a compression & a leak down test to check the inner health of my engine. The results came back all positive and within BMW guide lines. Paperwork for this as well as all the other none scheduled repairs is all enclosed in the extensive maintenance / service history A4 arch lever file.
Suffice to say my CSL is mechanically fit and while this may not be necessary I will be happy for our "CSL Guru" Gareth to perform a full pre sale AUC inspection (at the buyers expense) should you feel the need.
It's also worth noting that Gareth has carried out all the major servicing (and some minor maintenance) on my car since I purchased it back in 2009 so he knows DU-VAY very well, inside & out. It's one of the main reasons why it's in such superb condition.

BMW (Mondial) Approved Warranty

My CSL has had the extended BMW approved warranty for all but the last few years. I have 14 (A4) pages chronologically listing all the warranty work my car has ever had throughout out its existence. I've highlighted the big ticket items below.
Please note: this very same warranty can be reactivated at any time ( at additional cost to the new owner ) should it be desired.
In my 6 + years of ownership I've only had 3 claims listed below:

- New fuel pump (and new fuel filter at my request) on: 27-11-2010 @ 81991 miles

- New "M" differential + revised diff oil with booster on: 19-11-2010 @ 81944 miles

- Replacement Alternator unit on: 22-01-2010 @ 69656 miles

Prior to my ownership there were a few note worth warranty claims and these are as follow:

- Intake Air temp. sensor on: 09-12-2008 @ 63685 miles

- Complete full VANOS system replaced on: 25-06-2008 @ 59880 miles

- Front suspension lower wishbones & bushes on: 25-06-2008 @ 59880 miles

- Replacement driver seat on: 14-12-2007 @ 58237 miles

- Complete clutch kit & duel mass flywheel replaced on: 04-10-2007 @ 58237 miles

- Rear coil springs X2 replaced on: 25-06-2007 @ 53357 miles

- Rear control arms X2 replaced on: 25-06-2007 @ 53357 miles

- Front wheel bearings X2 replaced on: 30-08-2006 @ 38715 miles

- Replacement Alcantara steering wheel on: 30-08-2006 @ 38715 miles

- Lambda sensor replaced on: 30-08-2006 @ 38715 miles

- Rear coil springs X2 replaced on: 25-08-2006 @ 38157 miles

- Main battery replaced on: 14-08-2006 @ 38156 miles

- Main battery replaced on: 22-09-2005 @ 32202 miles

- Replacement Alternator unit on: 22-09-2005 @ 32202 miles

- SMG Salmon Relay 22-07-2004 @ 16675 miles

Most recent expenditures:

At the beginning of March last year (after another winter of hibernation) I decided to treat my Cecil to a few bit & pieces. What started as a few simple jobs soon escalated into a mini restoration. £4000 later, I've ended up with an exceptional condition CSL, which belays its age and mileage in equal measures.

Below is a list of the main highlights.

- New BOSCH S3 (70Ah) battery with 3 Year Warranty

- New OEM (ATE) front CSL brake discs X2

- New "Performance Friction" Z rated Carbon metallic front & rear brake pads + fresh ATE Blue Race brake fluid

- Fresh BMW approved MTF LT2 gearbox oil + latest SMG update.

- Fresh G48 antifreeze / coolant.

- New GENUINE OEM rear shock absorbers X2 (SACHS) + new associated lower mounting bolts.

- New Heavy Duty (MEYLE) rear shock top mounts X2 + New bump stops

- New OEM antiroll bar drop links (Lemforder) , 2X rear + 1X driver front

- Extensive front end paint work re-spray to eliminate stone chips and scabs, including the inside of the front wings, front bumper, whole bonnet & lower side sills.

- Original MK1 front carbon flippers refurbished by CSLR's "Mark CSL" .

- New GENUINE BMW front kidney grills X2 along with brand new headlight lenses X2

- New GENUINE BMW CSL specific Alcantara hand brake lever

- Refurbished GENUINE BMW rear centre console

- Numerous GENUINE BMW chassis under trays, brackets, nuts, bolts, clips, etc.

INTERIOR:

As to be expected from a vehicle that's used sparingly (purely for pleasure and fun) it is in excellent over all condition, it has not been smoked in (it doesn't even have a cigaret lighter) and it's free from unpleasant odours. The rare and collectable UK CSL Limited production placket is included and firmly attached to the Carbon Fibre centre console.
The Alcantara has no rips, tears, marks or otherwise including the drive seat. The steering wheel & the driver seat were both changed under warranty few years ago, approximately 50K miles ago and have always been kept clean using "RACE-GLAZE" Alcantara cleaner. The rear centre console was recently replaced with a Genuine BMW spare one I've had professionally restored. The headlining is perfect without any rips or stains. Drive side CSL specific trim plate has been replaced with a GENUINE BMW item a couple of years ago, while the passenger side is the original one with a few age related marks. There are a number of other new items of trim, clips, etc that have been fitted over the years.
The carpets are immaculate as they have always had GENUINE BMW floor matts over them . Everything is regularly cleaned & hoovered.
All the electrical item work 100% and there are no known faults to report. As previously mentioned the passenger air bag has already been replaced under BMW re-call.
All original BMW toll kit, including the locking wheel nut key, emergency folding triangle, tyre inflator kit and a replacement First Aid kit are all there, present & correct.
In summery, it's a very tidy interior however it is not new and has a few tiny age / use related marks here & there as to be expected, none of which are detrimental to the overall great condition.

EXTERIOR & CHASSIS:

As previously mentioned, my CSL has always been garaged and doesn't get exposed to winter weather, the overall condition of all body panels, as well the chassis along with all the rubber seals, is exceptional. I've Clay bared the paint work a few times, it's always kept clean using AUTOGLYM products and I keep a fleece lined indoor dust cover over it. That said, it isn't a Museum piece and will have a few signs of use as to be expected of any used car. There are no trolly dings in any of the outer panels and no signs of corrosion or rust.

The whole front end of the car along with lower side sills has recently been fully repainted to eliminate stone chips I've collected over the past 6 years. This wasn't just a cheap blow over but a pain staking process which involved having the front bumper and wings removed to get them pained properly inside, along all the edges and outside.
In addition to that, I have also replaced all the front facing items such as headlight covers & the front bonnet kidney grills.
The original 2003 MK1 front bumper carbon flipper have also been refurbished back to "As New" condition.
The carbon roof panel is in excellent condition and isn't suffering from any lacquer peel. Back in 2010 I had a brand New rear bumper fitted by Murketts BMW.

The rear sub frame chassis has been completely replaced under BMW Warranty and subsequently filled with structural foam by Elms BMW Stansted back in 2012 to a high standard which was further refined by our Gareth at Elms BMW Cambridge. In addition to that I have replaced majority of brackets, clips, nuts & bolts associated with the new boot floor and the rest of the chassis.

The CSL "CUP" alloy wheels have been refurbished over the past few years (once in my ownership) and remain very presentable to this day.

This CSL is now SOLD

Please note, this is not a forced or desperate sale and the car is priced according to its superb condition & excellent service history, which are the two most important factors when looking for a good car like the mighty CSL.

If you're looking for a cheap & rugged CSL or judge your cars pedigree purely based on low mileage then my CSL is most likely not for you. If however you are looking for an exceptional example of BMW's "M" division greatest hit, that has been cherished and maintained by people who can afford the correct upkeep without cutting corners, then please get in touch by either posting a message in this thread or p.m. me directly.

Thank you for taking your time to read this far.

The Advert is Awesome

"NJ!!!!!" This is how a csl is promoted.

Gutted you're selling bud.

DUVAY has become a bit of an Ensign for this bally forum.

If I could swing it with the missus it would definitely be Wales bound.

If you do have an evangelical moment and decide to keep her........no one will blame you, it's a hell of a car.

Actually, I think you should keep it Matt, and we all do a 13th Anniversary tour to Munich next year. I presume 13 isn't unlucky over there

Before the Munich trip I was doing very few kilometers for the past 2 years.
After the trip I realized that I really need to enjoy the car and I drive it with every chance that I have.
I did my 100.000th km in the odometer while driving flat out in Monza.
What a great way to celebrate an M3 CSL !
I think that life is too short to not enjoy a CSL and try to keep the mileage down.

I am sure that Matt sooner or later will regret his decision.
Especially when all new cars won't accelerate more than the speed limit at any given place, they will be very quiet and boring etc.

Absolutely love it, proper little hooligan of a car! :hahaha: Have it on SuperSports now, and all new bushings, brakes, clutch, etc. so it feels pretty sorted. Still can't get over how much speed these things can carry. Cheap road tax here too (€500pa, as opposed to CSL's €1800), so it'll be my car for the winter. It drinks more than the CSL too :drinkers:

You're on a GP2? Do you notice a big difference from the GP1?

Totally agree Alex.

It took me a few years to shake off the "mileage syndrome" and now I couldn't care less. I'll never be able to buy another the way prices are escalating.

Matt's car is a superb example which is heading for 90K miles plus.

The mileage vs price ratio of the historical csl market is disappearing rapidly.

Its about time.

While I wasn't ;) remember that Swiss mountain pass trip I did few years ago ;) 3500 miles in three weeks hooning up & down Swiss mountain sides, around Italian lakes, etc. :supz: going through the 80,000 mile barrier while doing that :smokin: (pix below)
BTW over 23,000 miles in 6 years in my weekend car isn't bad going, considering I have other cars at my disposal.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's worth every penny, but this'll break new ground in values for higher mileage CSLs, regardless of the "rights and wrongs" of the perceieved values in relation to mileage mantra...

Excellent condition & provenance is all that matters with a Modern Classics like the E46 CSL :smokin: not that 91k is particularly high mileage for a 12 year old Masterpiece :smt055

What's the verdict ?

Matt

What news @ yonder window??

THANX for your interest chaps
The good news is, after an extensive 2.5 hours of AUC pre sale inspection @ Bartlett Automotive my CSL has been pronounced fighting fit :supz: and was described as "MINT" by Damian himself who carried out the inspection with only a few minor items that need addressing, as listed below:

- Main car battery is getting old and is slightly under performing @ 75% and just under 12V on the discharge cycle.
While my CSL always starts on the button and I've had no tale tale signs of this, it is the Genuine BMW battery which is about 8 years old now so it has lasted well beyond it's recommended life span, mainly due to the storage nature of my car (always garaged) and the fact it's hooked up to a C-Tech battery conditioned every winter.
New BOSCH 70Ah battery has already been ordered

- The emergency tyre sealant gunk is out of date.
It looks like the original 2003 item, but aren't they all ;) I've not used the original emergency kit ever as I have a better solution... HOLTS tyreweld (already in the car) as it's a better product due to its water based solution which washes out easily before tyre repair so you don't get turned away from many tyre repairers due to the otherwise messy nature of the other solvent based puncture repair stuff, such as the BMW gunk.
Sorted :smt023

- Passenger side front door/window seal just starting to de-laminate.
A common E46 Coupe problem but inexpensive to resolve as these can be repaired (instead of replaced @ £250 per side) with contact adhesive.
A small job for today ;)

Believe it or not these were the only stand out issues which came up after the extensive inspection  so don't just take my word for it when I say my CSL is in exceptional condition :smokin:

I must extend my THANX to Damian & Natalie for their utter professionalism (as always), totally unbiased approach to the inspection (which can sometimes be difficult to achieve amicably when you have an existing customer as well as potential new owner/customer right there on the day waiting) and for that personal touch which you just don't get at the main dealers. Thank You guys :smt055

I would highly recommend their AUC pre sale inspection to anyone who's seriously thinking of buying or selling their CSL as it offers not only great peace of mind for the potential new owner but reassurance for the existing owner they are selling their precious CSL in the best possible condition.

As for the potential new custodial I won't go into great detail but lets just say we are mid negotiations for now and next few days should be interesting
I'll update this thread as soon as I know more.

I didn't have to, but I bought a spare set of wheels, a spare set of cup tyres and a set of MPSS tyres. I have put new sill plates on it. It does need the CPV seal, a diff seal and an exhaust hanger sorting, which I will do when my E36 is off the ramp. There is also some damage to the centre of the rear seats caused by my Porsche kiddie seat rubbing on it, which I need to sort at some point. Otherwise it is spot on. :) Done about 1500 miles in it.

As of last Thursday DU**VAY has left my ownership for good :(:crybaby::bigcry:
As I write this he's sitting snugly tucked into his own shipping container at the port of Southampton waiting to be loaded onto a big boat, heading South to the stunning islands of New Zealand.
Yes folks... you read this right... another fine example of one of UK supplied 422 units is leaving our shores for a new life abroad.
Gerry aka "Beamer" from Auckland N.Z. is DU**VAYs new owner. He's a true gentleman, a lifelong BMW fanatic and I wish him many happy CSL miles in the very near future (about 7 weeks) Hopefully he'll be along soon to fully introduce himself and fill in the blanks however in the meantime here are some of the last pix I took of DU**VAY during his last UK Inspection Service (which I included as part of the sale) and further pix of his final TLC session before being dropped off at the shipping handlers on Thursday.
By far DU**VAY was the best, most enjoyable, visceral and entertaining car I've ever owned :smt055 without a shadow of a doubt BMWs 'M' divisions greatest hit :supz: and will be dearly missed :smt045 Farewell Cecil and safe sailing the high seas.

Thanks for the kind words Matt, you have been fantastic to deal with, even though we are half a world apart. Dealing with you and your help to do all the bits at your end was easier than buying Cecil from the dealer down the road. I will be a regular on this site, hopefully posting photos of Cecil romping through our fabulous scenery here in New Zealand, I can't wait for "MOL Beacon" the big container ship to arrive with Cecil.
Any CSLR members planning a trip to NZ please contact me, there is always a bed at our place by the sea, down under.

Cheers,
Gerry.:smt039:smt039:smt039

Welcome aboard Gerry  and you're more than welcome. After all the dreary UK based time wasters you've been a ray of sunshine and a real pleasure to deal with
Remember to hit that green Donate button above to become a full CSLR member and I'll buy U a few  when I see U & Cecil in N.Z. in December to compensate for the donation, as per my original Ad
I look forward to all your pix of my old Cecil from N.Z. and I'll make sure I'll bring my Pro photo kit wth me in December :smokin:
p.s. Has the big boat sailed from Southampton yet ?

Like rare bottles of wine that get broken or drunk, with two gone abroad, does that mean the remainder have now gone up in value ?

Somehow missed the last page - sad to hear D**VAY will be leaving these shores, but what a place to head to :smokin:

I visited my mate who lives in NZ back in 2012 and we did a trip across the South Island in his Clio 172. The CSL will be absolutely sensational over there. (I hope to head back there in the next year or so)

Beamer - you've certainly bought one of the best examples, enjoy it

Beamer you lucky bugger! I've spent a lot of time in NZ over the years (my wife's a Kiwi!) and every time we go I wish I had my CSL out there to enjoy those roads!
