Know the CSL smg cannot run one :blalalala: but I fitted one to my M3 Sunday morning as is hands down the best shifter out there!

Still working on a cover in the window switch area and the ash tray so will get some more up once I'm happy with that.

Love the work so far.

Steering wheel is a massive improvement.

Check out Setra's M3 track car.

Fekkin awesome.

Thanks! Gone through a few different steering wheels and the feel from this one is great.

Yeah I've seen the build for that car, it's pretty epic.

AKG are good but this is in another world, only thing that really anoyed me with the akg is that it leant forward too much, even with it pulled all the way back.
If I were to fit one from fresh again think I'd spin the base plate around and make my own fixing holes further back.

But yeah the CAE Being sprung loaded to nutral means you can really smash it though the gears and having reverse locked out is a cool feature too.

completely awesome. I see you have gone up a notch with the halo seat.

CAE is the best shifter out there.

I'm sure we'll all read about it on PBMW but are you doing more to the car?

Yeah will all be in the mag over time, future plans are cage, shorter steering rack and maybe a 3.9 or 4.1 diff. Hopfully in that order too as have been putting off the cage for too long already.

Have made the CAE install look a littler neater now.

That's very very nice. I would have to pay someone to get that kind of quality work.

Re cage, are you thinking full FIA spec cage which is welded to all vital chassis points or half cage?

I have a CSL (naturally) but the one thing I find lacking in the car is steering feel. There just isn't much of it plus it is a bit light. I wonder if the regular car is better in that respect.

have you done the exhaust yet?

Very surprised to read this as the CSL is probably the best BMW in terms of steering feel.
I think you had the issues at the track with the cups and you are not sure what geometry settings you have.
Sounds very suspicious now ;)

The only thing I don't like about the CAE shifter is that it bolts on to the transmission tunnel and not the top of the gearbox. What I found is that in hard cornering the gearbox and engine move around a bit from left to right (mine was not solid mounted for NVH), which means the gear-change position would change slightly and because the H pattern on the MT75 feels quite close together with this shifter, it lead to mis-shifts going from 4th to 5th (potentially allowing you to buzz the engine).

In the end, I made a platform to mount it on the top of the gearbox so that any movement in the transmission did not affect the shift position.

Plus the adjuster on the shaft would keep coming undone, so once I was satisfied it was in the correct position I had a one-piece item made. With this all done, the change was super-fast and I was then confident to do clutchless up-changes with just the briefest throttle lift (Ludde dog-box). Was sufficiently fast-changing that it was able to see off 750bhp GTRs :).

I'm sure the 420G is mounted more rigidly than the MT75, but if you do start to experience miss-shifting issues, then at least you know where to look to fix it :).

Want to go full weld in (that's why I've been putting it off)

CSL has a better rack than my poverty M3 so you better off currently.

Haven't really done much with the exhaust, I want to go single system to get the weight down but still need to be within noise regs.

That's some fine fab work you have there

I have Vibra-Technics engine and transmission mounts so I don't suffer from that problem.

No Alex, I also have a Gt3 RS, Cayman R (sold) and AMG c63. CSL steering feel is sub par tbh especially off centre and too light. I haven't changed it in any way. It's accurate just not feelsome. Not like the cups which I think will respond to lower pressures but the last track evening was slightly damp and the car didn't get exercised enough. Grip was much better on 30psi than 35psi, I can attest.

But the steering may warrant further investigation... I'll ask Simpson's

good job. I have the fully welded in cage. Stiffer than my Gt3 RS :)

and am upgrading to supersprint race box with supersprint resonater. Currently only testing 88db at 6k rpm on most tracks (i don't know what the drive by is) but I think should be ok. I'll find out one way or another. It is predominantly done to save weight. I actually like the current setup noise wise.

My Supersprint race system (headers back) registers 106dB static :bigcry:.

so I think this is going to be marginal..

I currently am at 88db at 6k rpm and need to be under 98db so I thought I could get away with the supersaprint resonator and race backbox only. The whole upgrade is pointless if I can't make it on track due to noise..........:banghead:

annoying.

Best thing for weight is get a custom 3 inch exhaust made up like Lawsy did on his M3, thats what Ill do next then you can specify DB.

As your be to close with any more add on's.

I cant make Snetterton as car is 95% finished :(

Wanted to go to see what cup2 are like.

PBMWsam
20-08-2015, 01:55 PM
88db at 6k is pretty quiet! Think I get 90 with just decats on a m3 system, and only ever get asked to rev to 5k

Billy Snett is last test for m current tyres, if still don't get on with them will go cup2 aswell. The session is fully booked now anyway :(

It's loud..at least the intake is and none of the testers can actually believe the nosie meter

It's just that with the exhaust out back where they take static measurements. That's the number.

does the resonator actually increase dB? i do hope that others with just the resonator + race box setup can let me know how loud it can be. We are looking at > 15kg of weight loss here.

Mike R

We are looking at > 15kg of weight loss here.

Which is the main reason for having it.

Mine being a fully optioned car (which is supposed to be 1420kg), the -20kg reduction of the full system is very welcome.
