Hi All
After 2 years nearly and 6,000 miles I have just picked up a cog warning error on the dash.
I pulled the error logs from the Engine ECU, no errors on the SMG.
The battery has just been replaced, as if coughed its last breath, ironically just after the cog had come up, so the "Failed connection@ may have been wing to the battery.

So question is would the cog have been as of the above, or would this have through an engine light error, and the cog is owing to something SMG Related, such as the famous Salmon Relay.
I had the smg pump pressure looked at and its seems fine, running @ 60% and it primes ok etc.
Car drives fine and moves through gears, the error came on after sitting at a show all day, having locked and unlocked a few times, to the point the battery was very low.
any thoughts would be appreciated.
cheers
J.

Does the gear indicator number on the dash flash? Every single time I've had the cog appear, I get flashing gears and it's always been the front left bonnet switch.

Mine came on recently when hooning around wales.. stopped the car and let it cool down a tad and then it was fine.

Mine has been coming on in the race car with "Sporadic" errors. I've just been resetting it between sessions.
I think heat could be an issue with mine.

Hi. Just the cog. no other info.
I was coming home from work, so had just been in it for 4 minutes, don't think it was hot.

So Diag software reports 2 erorrs on SMG.
37 shift path (gear) position sensor evaluation.
36 selector angle (WW) position sensor evaluation
Can clear cog, and then error comes straight back as does the cog.
Funny thing is the error will not clear, but when I look at the live status of the SMG, the angle sensor and shift path (gear) position sensor seem fine and are operating as I would expect (being no expert)
cheers in advance any thoughts please ;0)

I had a flashing gear light this weekend followed by the cog, which got me reading up on all things SMG.
This link may be of use: http://forums.m3cutters.co.uk/showthread.php?t=105898.
Post number 11 in particular seems very useful in diagnosing what SMG particular issue one may have.

Does any one know the running values of the following.
Position-Shift Path 1 (Gear)
Position-Selector Angle 1 (Shift Path)
Mine runs between 1022-1023 (1023 Being highest available value)
when changing gear on the drive, wondered if they should move around more like the Position-Shift Path 2 & Position-Selector Angle 2.
Plus, if the 2nd sensors are supposed to be 50% less that the 1st Sensors there's an issue as they don't actually represents this relationship.
But this call all be a red herring ;0) May just bite bullet and get a new GPS component as per a member recommendation ;0) Cheers

The first thing I would change is the salmon relay for about £10.
As the cars not done much miles.
Mine lost gears and had flashing cog light. Elms done pressure test on SMG pump and fine, its been fine since relay.

UPDATE.
Replaced GPS. Indy popped it in for me. The cog light is now off. But only have half the box 135r. Thebox will not shift into 246.
Tried to run smg adaptation as assumed this would tell gearbox what was what, but the procedure will not run.
daft q. But is there anything I'm missing.
Car drives ok but will error if you try and shot into 246.side of box.
Do I just need dealer to recalibrate GPS or similar ?
Cheers

This guy had the same issue and used GT1 to run the 'Adapt Transmission Fully' adaptation on it:

Not sure what software you used, but may be worth running it again (if you haven't already).

Doesn't lack of 2/4/6 suggest it might be the detent spring, or something in that area?

I got the cog warning (without flashing) yesterday from cold start. I drove it for about a half hour (and all gears worked fine in auto and manual), parked up to nip in Tesco and when I restarted the car, the cog was gone. Didn't come on later in the day when I was returning home
Ordered a couple of Salmon Relays this morning so will replace and hopefully not see the cog again for a while.

so update.
After a new gear position sensor swap, and SMG Adaption all gears are now present and correct, cog has now gone away ;)
cheers for comments.

Just needed adaptations, as the car had learned the old GPS settings, so needed to learn the new settings as the new GPS actually was working, so after the adaption system was ran, all was well again. In my case of course the car was working fine before the cog light came on, as in all gears were there and the car was working, just had the errors 36/37 as well as the cog light (from the errors)

Good news Jonny  time for S6 (DSC Off) and a bit of a thrashing to let the SMG know the optimum setting :supz: ;)

Mines still working fine.
No thrashing for me as still got 900 miles to go before that starts.

Yeah. Just went for a blast to pick some fish and chips up.
A bloke walked over with his misses and said "bloody hell, a real Csl"
Forgot how good it sounds. Drives very very well. Had new suspension and bushes so is like new.

Collected car from garage on Friday, after having a service whilst it was up on the ramps, and all is back to normal, in fact, as the adaptations have been ran its a bit crisper ;0) happy days, took her for a early morning blast and all is again well with the world.

i had the cog come up on Saturday evening, at the same time gear indicator started to flash and car selected neutral, i pulled over switched off and restarted and cog went and i could select a gear.
but since then it can't find gears on the way down the box unless you lift of and let revs die and on the way up it also will not do it with much load.
using auto in a slow shift speed allowed me to get where i needed to go and manual mode was useless.
Anyone had anything similar or know the cause? it almost feels a bit like clutch, its not had one in 82k miles so i'm hoping that could be it.

How often do you drive the car? Id replace Salmon Relay first for £12

Use to be lots 10k a year now not a lot done about 800 miles since last October.
I'll order a Salmon relay and see if that works

Wasn't the salmon relay, tried that now, so going to get the fault codes read and see where I go from there

Read the fault codes on mine today on a Delphi system I have before it goes into BMW while I'm away.
From the gearbox I have
Fault 48 - Mechanical converter lockup clutch monitoring
Fault 6 - unknown
Fault 92 - Unknown
Anyone know what these mean?
first one to me signals a clutch issue. It has done 82000 miles and is on original clutch, other ones I've googled but not found anything

What does your pump pressure go to when checked?

Low! Turns out it is pump and having an actuator replaced too.
A big (very) bill :bigcry::bigcry::bigcry:
