Even more reason to bring our own oil for the next scheduled service from now on: http://www.bmwblog.com/2014/11/10/bmw-replaces-castrol-shell-recommended-oil-supplier/

This won't change the correct oil for our cars though, it isn't as if they have gone back in time and redesigned the engine is it. Or have they???

They're recommending their new 10w-60 oil now (which is likely rebadged Shell Helix 10w60). Probably safe for the engine. It's not like Castrol was special enough to prevent rod bearing or cam failures.
Much appreciated thanks for the heads up

BMW have reverted back to their original supplier 'SHELL', the Castrol collaboration is relatively recent 1999 all BMW's before then were run on Shell as per their Service Manuals.
I wonder if this is financially motivated or has the cost of replacing engines had something to do with it? ;)

Either way it is financially motivated.
I'm no expert on oils, but going by the grade of oil one cannot assume they are all the same.
I once had the gearbox oil changed on a run about and was surprised to see a bill for engine oil. To cut a long story short I ended up phoning Castrols technical department. They confirmed the oil could also be used in said cars gearbox as it had passed tests x, y & z for molecular breakdown etc. The reason it was not listed on the bottle, or other tech blurb available to the general public was to prevent anyone thinking they could use any old engine oil with disastrous results.

Has anyone recently had a BMW dealer service? If so, what are they using these days?
Thanks

All dealers are Shell now, and have been for some months. Be very suprised if they have any Castrol 10W-60 left, unless they had massive stores of it/don't see many M cars.
It may be that they have not changed the name on the invoicing system.

The spec of both oils are identical according to Opie oils.

Got an inspection 2 done on the 8th, says on the invoice Castrol Edge Profess. Also says final drive but no mention of oil brand.
