Whats your thoughts on this boot floor repair from Elms? This was replaced less than two years ago and the car has covered just over 2,000 miles since then.
Its in with another dealer getting this fixed. I have reached out to Elms to get their comments, I will let you know what they say.

Looks like swarf left in the damp causing surface rust.

This is why I would not want my whole boot floor removed and replaced with an identical panel that will again crack.
Plates and injection is the only safe way glad both my m3 were not cracked and when they do I will plate and foam them both.

The surface rust runs the full length of the boot floor due to swarf being left in there. Looks like they were even using materials not approved by BMW as it was finished in with a matt black aerosol. The dealer in Scotland wants to pull everything off top and bottom to clean and reseal the entire boot floor.
Elms are looking at the pictures now, I will see what they say tomorrow.
Its SB, must jut be the flash is catching all the different paints. :banghead:

If I were you I'd ask the Scottish dealer to have a look inside all the rear boot cavities with a video inspection scope for any rust eating it's way from inside out, considering the amount of surface rust you have now. :banghead: If any cavity rust is found I would insist on Elms Bedford having to do this job all over again, to a much higher standard.

Got to say Matt mine was also spot on, really nice job and still looks new at just over a year old. I regularly stick it over the pit for inspection (force of habit).
Did Cambridge not send their floor repairs to Bedford? Pretty sure that's what I was told when my process kicked off. Its where I was supposed to be done but they were about 6 months behind so I was re booked at Stanstead.

Elms sent mine to Hitchin. Looked a good job when they had finished. Showed me under the car, inside and the cracked section they had cut out. They also sent me photos. That was just over a year ago. Will get Gareth to check it out when it goes in for it's annual oil change.
They also changed front & rear bushes at the same time.

Did they charge you extra for the bushes? I asked to have mine changed when the subframe was being done, I think they wanted an extra £400 from memory. Luckily when it came to it my bushes had already been up rated with Turner MSport bushes prior to my ownership. I've found Bedford to be superb with everything they have done with my cars. The repair on mine is nearly complete and should be getting it back very soon. Luckily I'm only 10 mins from Bedford and have been able to pop in a few times to see how it's coming along.
Not good with the boot floor from the OP, I'd be surprised if Elms didn't put it right for you.

Cambridge doesn't have a body shop so sends everything to Bedford, I was talking to the DP in Cambridge and that’s what he told me. Mine was ‘repaired’ in Bedford.
BMW in Scotland quoted £4,440.05 to put it right, that includes dropping the running gear, cleaning and resealing the entire boot floor inside and out. I have passed that quote to Bedford and await their comments on Tuesday.
The technical manager for BMW Scotland and Ireland is also coming to look at the sub-standard repair.
Its getting fixed regardless, just interested to see if Elms are going to take ownership....

Even if your boot has had a top notch repair, its worth checking all cavities for swarf. I found all sorts of metal dust in the Battery compartment for example. That was not even touched during the repair, but the metal filings/dust gathered there and started to rust. It was just on the surface, so polished out, but I think if it was left there it would have gotten through the paint.

It does sound really amateurish. Couple of weeks doing a repair, and they don't bother vacuuming out all the crap before painting.
I recall they had a change of staff mid - late 2013, which was why I ended up getting mine done elsewhere. I wonder if this was the reason for this apparent decline in quality.

This was repaired in late 2011 before i owned the car. It was probably coming to the end of the warranty window so they would have been rushing them through.

Elms have been very good to deal with and authorized the repair. All surface corrosion will be removed and the boot floor will be painted top and bottom.

Not really bothered about the value to be entirely honest. But I fail to see why putting the car right would decrease its value, it's a BMW panel going on and being fitted by BMW.
Does replacing the boot floor decrease the value?

Replacing the boot, No, because its a known failure point on E46 M3's.
As far as your rear fender panel removal and replacement and a previous unknown accident, Yes it would decrease the value of the car to me and to many others. Then again there are also many many others who wouldnt care. 50/50 point of view i guess.
It IS coming along wonderfully though. Looking forward to the finished job and some nice pics.

If anything it will most probably add value in the eyes of most future CSL buyers as they are more wary of ones which haven't been done IMHO.

The work is being carried out by BMW and they will carry a record of that.
Its my car and my OCD required it be put right, other people would probably just have sold it as soon as it was spotted. I'm not trying to cover my tracks, I just not interested in hearing people speak negatively about my CSL.
Regarding covering tracks, it's worth mentioning that this was previously owned by a CSLR member and was sold directly after the boot floor repair. Elms told me they informed the previous owner about this damage as they spotted it when working on the floor.

I'm just ribbing you a little. You stated that you didn't really care about about value etc then promptly deleted the pictures showing the car had taken a knock in a past life.
There is no doubt that the fact that your car has had a rear quarter will effect it's values. But as long as it has been done properly, should it matter? Probably not, it certainly won't effect how it drives, but that's how the market works. It's the same market that will dictate that my car with it's low millage replacement engine is worth less now than if it had the original block. But honestly what would you rather have, a 30K engine or an 85K engine?
All of the above is laughable when you see just how much 'original' car is left when some classics go for 'restoration'. You seem to be able to replace pretty much everything as long as the chassis plate remains in place. How many air cooled Porsches have had new quarters and sills I wonder?
I've said it before. These cars are now 12 years old at best and many have been used on track. Unless they have been kept in a bubble expect the unexpected. But an original paint & paneled car will always be worth more.

I know how it would have looked but really I didn't want to start an originality/value debate, but that's immediately where it went. I should have known better.
Nice post and I cant disagree.
Is the value affected, of course it is. That's why the previous owner immediately offloaded it when he found out.

On an interesting slightly connected topic. JZM Porsche will not purchase and re-sell a Porsche if they know it has had a new panel. They will only do sale or return for cars that have had this sort of work. Worth remembering if a a CSLer is looking to move up to a GT3.

I think its great to see this work, and the rear 1/4 isn't an issue, at least we can see it's been repaired properly.
Coming from the classic porsche side of things you should see the starting point for some of the resto's ;) (a friend of mine's current project... pg9 onwards for bodywork http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=41415&start=120 )
CSL is a car built for the track etc
as some of the 964RS boys used to say , " there are no virgins in the bordello "

IMO the fact that you've documented and photographed the work speaks volumes for the car's integrity. Should you decide to sell the car the new owner will be assured.
