I am not happy spoke to a Lee and said I need inspection 1.

he said ok we need it for a day!

I said surely you do the valve clearance?

He then asked someone and said yes we do!

I said so you need it for two days then to check them from cold.

He had to ask someone again.

I then said I have a 20% off addressed to my reg no.

He said you can't use that as it's already discounted.

He then said it will be £699.

I replied funny your website says £669!

He replied when did I look at the site for prices?

I replied yesterday!

Safe to say I'm not now using elms for my servicing am using a local useless dealer as I can't be arsed with worrying about who works on my 13 year old m3.:banghead:

how does the BMW warranty situation work if Bartlett start servicing & stamping the book ? Are you authorised to organise warrenty repairs etc or does it stall have to go to the dealer ?

Sadly you're absolutely right mate :( as I found out for myself yesterday when I rung Elms to book my Cecil for the air bag recall
( you're still my Cecils exclusive mechanic mate ;) since 2009  )
They told me Rob has recently retired... good guy who will be missed IMHO.

What did they say about airbag? BMW haven't yet sent me the second letter advising stock of the product yet?

HEy SHimmy ;)
At the moment they seem to have a healthy stock of RHD passenger air bags in Germany but it's a 7 to 10 day waiting time before they get to Elms (I've checked with Nick @ Elms Parts)
All you do is ring the Service desk @ Elms, ask them to order the said air bag then book your car for at least 10 + days ahead so you & your Cecil can rendezvous at about the time the air bag arrived from Germany  in theory.
I'm in for this recall on the 27th having booked an appointment (and ordered the air bag) on the 18th. Apparently is an hour & a half job so they can do it while I wait.
Note to you as much to myself: Don't forget to bring you original recall letter with you ;)

Hi, legally under the 'Block Exemption Ruling' all our work has to be recognised by BMW as being 'as good as' (although in all probability its most likely 'better' than theirs), so your vehicle warranty is NOT invalidated by going outside of the BMW network. However, to clarify we are not authorised by BMW to carry out any warranty work, so it would need to return to a dealer if that was necessary.
Damian and Gareth are masters of the M-Series and CSL models, so general servicing, repairs, upgrades and programming etc is no issue whatsoever, we're using OEM parts and oils, the same as BMW would use themselves, we just dont change you BMW rip off prices - PLUS we're generally nicer and more friendly and definitely more helpful! ... Come and see for yourself

good to know :) Gareth did the last insp2 for me when he was at elms.

I asked, as its nice to have a CSL expert cast his eyes over the car for any obvious warrenty issues .. which I suppose if found, could then be snet onto the main dealer

Wont be using Elms again, can't be any clearer than that. Now just a normal dealer like any other, the specialism and people have gone and all that's left is really bad service.

Now i have a dilemma, looking to book the csl in for service in April & was thinking of Elms / Bartletts as having spoken to my local dealer they didn't exactly fill me with confidence!! Not really surprised tho.
Only prob is i'm in Somerset & it would be a 2 day trek to Cambridge as they obviously need the car cold for Inspection. Any recommendations closer to Somerset please?

Do they really need the car cold? I haven't heard that before.

Anyway, if Bartletts is too far for you, Redish are very good.

Elms said valve clearance check needs to be done cold? Have you used Redish? I see they are in Bristol which is only 50 mins or so away compared to 3.5 hrs each way.

Ahh okay, that makes sense.

I used Redish for their chassis crack repair and a few other small jobs. I haven't used them for engine stuff personally, but they very much know their way around the E46 M3.

As the E46 M3 is so popular and the engine is fundamentally the same as on the CSL, I find it very hard to believe that there are so few places who can carry out what is a routine inspection and adjustment correctly. Is it really that difficult?

I completely agree but i was thinking more about resale value (in the unfortunate event that i have to sell!) How do people react / effect value with unknown specialist stamps in the service book etc?

Yes. Soon after I got it I took mine to a major Sytner BMW very close to me, and they screwed up the service and incorrectly guessed how much oil it needed. I had to read out the instructions over the phone from an auto-route in France. They said they don't see them very often...

Took it to Elms ever since, which was great, but now will take it to Gareth and Damian.

The CSL community is so small and knowledgeable, I think Bartlett's name in the service book will be more valuable than a boggo BM main dealer more focused in getting 320D's through as fast as possible.
