Following on from Oh my goodness.

Time to show your age gents and cslgirl.

When you first passed your test what cars did you lust over but could not quite afford. I am not talking about dream cars, e.g. Lambo, etc but cars just out of reach.

For me it was the Renault Gordini & Alfasud.

For me it was the hot hatches. 205gti, rs turbo, Sierra Cosworth, even fast Rovers. Then the proper dream cars like the 959 or F40. Lambourghini Diablo when that was introduced.
I passed my test in 1991, I'm 41.

Not telling when I passed my test, but you could work it out from my choice of cars.

Liked the 205gti, however I chose the Fiat Abarth 130

Loved the Sierra Cosworth to both look at and drive. Insurance and high incidence of theft put me off. :bigcry:

I used to go to Bristol Street Motors in Bromley and drool at one similar to this.

In the early 90's I owned an Astra gte 16v (at 21) and paid well over £1k insurance! Always lusted after the Champion limited edition though, with the leather seats.

We had a little crew going - a sierra cosworth owned by my now husband, 2 x renault gt turbos and a 205 peugeot 1.9 gti - them were the days racing off the lights !!

I'm 28 so I passed my test in June 2003. I think the car I lusted after from 16-17 was the Mk1 Focus RS which I finally bought in 2009 and as I've already said, Top Gear showed me for the first time the Noble M12, which I finally bought in 2010 and the CSL which I own now.

The only other cars I've really properly lusted after is an R34 GTR which I'm not so sure would be that fun to drive on the road and in more recent years a 71' Skyline GTR which was only for the sound that I now have 80% of in the CSL now already.

I suppose I'd love a 997 GT3 but unless I win some money I can't see that ever happening. Still, 3 dream cars before I'm 30 isn't bad going.

Good going. In my early 30 I had a Ur quattro.

When I was 29 and a bit I got my first Pork :smokin: a 968 Coupe. Used it as a daily and did my first ever TD in it
Great chassis and an interesting 3 litre 16V 4 pot but ultimately a little underpowered @ only 240 bhp.
This was readdressed few years later with a 5 litre V8 Pork 928 with 330 bhp :supz: which was my all time dream car since I was 4 :smt055

For me it was VW Golf MK2 GTi 16V (next door neighbours had 2 from New :supz: his a 16V 3 door & hers an 8V 5 door, both 1991 Big bumper models in Black :smt055
I could (just about) scarape enough cash for an early, small bumper 8 valver GTi but the insurance for a 17 year old living in central London with only streat parking was about three times the price of the car :banghead: which ultimately ended that little dream. Since then I've must have owned about 10 MK2 Golf GTis :supz: Here's a pix of one of the better ones.

Got my first car in 1996 (@ 20) and it was a classic 900i. But the dream was a 900 T16S

Love that 968 especially Matt :smokin:

The closest I came was a 900s saloon in my early 20's, I loved that car even though I never looked after it :bigcry:

Cheers Jeff  it was a particularly great example but as I later realised 240 bhp just wasn't enough for me ;) U know what they say... "Power corrupts" ;)
BTW my second car (first VERY sensible car) was a Classic shape SAAB 900i... but a TURBO 8V with epic Turbo lug :bigcry: and yes T16S was also a dream at the time but they were big bucks in the 90's thanks to a certain Trend at the time. Pic below of my Golden Swedish wonder

Well I bet it was quicker than my 8v saloon. It had a "5 Speed" badge sitting proudly on the back too :hahaha:

I nearly went to look at a 2-door sedan 900 T16S a couple of years ago, but then this popped up for sale and knew it had to be bought. It would have been getting sold to its first owner when I started to learn to drive

Nice Matt. An insurance quote of £7k meant the Turbo stayed a dream for me back then

:hahaha: You should have seen its brown leather interior  Willy Wonka would have been very proud ;)
IIRC I think I paid about £1500 for my SAABs insurance after about 5 years of careful, claim & accident free years of driving, still living in London with only on street parking.
Your £7k quote sounds very much like a "F*** Y**" quote... in all honesty I'm surprised they didn't just hung up on you, like they did with me when age 18 I rung for an insurance quote on a 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang 289 V8 AUTO 2 door Coupe :clown: Eventually someone quoted me a "F.Y." figure of £13 k for 3rd party only insurance :119: oh how I laughed :bigcry:

A few have mentioned bhp, but I remember drooling over 70 profile tyres. :hahaha: how times have changed. Pops will be along soon to reminisce over his 8 track sterio system. I think that's what it was called before cassettes took over.

Ah, the 8 track :-)

Never actually had a car with one fitted. It was the heady days of cassette players that used to eat more tapes than they played.

When I passed my test, it was the Lancia Delta Integrale Evo 1 that I wanted and then the Evo 2 came out. Some years later at 24 years old I set off to the bank, took a decent chunk of my savings out and headed off to Italy.

But I still went for the Ur quattro. Looking back I think the Lancia would have been better. The Audi was a big car.

It was a big car, but I'm pretty sure it was cheaper to run than my Lancia was! :banghead:

Other than a wheel sensor for the ABS (which I was ripped off by the dealer) it was routine servicing. Plugs cost a fortune though. Sold it for good money after owning it for 8 years.

The car under steered and the standard brakes were rubbish, with a capital R.
