View Full Version : Looking and advice reqd
Hi,
Not too long after April I'm going to be looking to purchase a CSL.....been a long term aim and circumstances are now making this possible
No disrespect to any owners of black ones, and yes I know it's the faster colour, I will be looking for a Silver Grey. Ideally unmolested, FSH and as low a mileage as my budget will allow......talking of budget.....will be looking to spend around £35-37500K.
Now to the advice reqd bit.....to get the duck egg question out of the way.....do the door mirrors fold in?....now you've stopped giggling I'll explain...where it would be kept would entail going through a narrow gap meaning the mirrors would be folded....anyhow, will try and make that the only stupid question
What do you guys think of my chances of finding a good example in my price range?.....
Plus, if you're reading this and either are thinking of moving yours on or you know someone else who may be....talk to me.
Thanks in advance for any help coming my way.

1. Welcome
2. Good choice
3. They fold manually, not electronically
4. Yes you'll find one but prices will rise through March is my guess

If it's that narrow, how do you get out the car ?

Thank you for that, appreciated.
However, do you feel my budget is enough for a good one?

It's a gap between the corners of two houses, opens as wide as you like once through it.

£35k, Grey CSL, don't get much better than that
£35k, Grey CSL, don't get much better than that
Looks promising then
Car is best described as being a possible investment purchase ( old fart typing here ).....hence wanting an unmodified one although an AP brake upgrade would be fine. One would be fitted if it didn't have one.
Already have a bit of a mental car that I can use for everyday stuff.....CSL would be insured for 5000 mle pa and be a thing to get out in the summer.
This brings to mind the saying...best laid plans etc etc.
£35k, Black CSL, don't get much better than that
Edited for accuracy ;)
Pops good luck with the search, should find a good one for that budget. Spring is round the corner and as shimmy mentioned, prices start to firm up as the weather starts to improve.
Good luck with the search and got to ask, what's the "mental" car?

garage queen don't need no APs, no APs needed on the road, just track. but soon as you ruin the best laid plans and end up at Bedford Autodrome on a whim, youll need them :)
This.....very much modified R53 mini GP..sod all standard on it, even the bodywork.
KW clubsports, AP 2 piece BBK, 250bhp etc etc.....it's fun

Spot on...
however, although realising there will be better options cost wise, in the Mini world it's Nitrac discs and Carbotech pads, APs will be worth getting purely from an appearance point of view
Had a pm re one potentially for sale.....if you see this, have already replied...twice due to the reply not showing in the sent box.

Just for you Jason.......................................
As stated in the OP, April is the earliest I can apply for my cash so from 06/04 I have to wait for them to cough up.
They're unlikely to rush themselves when it comes to handing money out and the idea, as stated, is to enquire if anyone here is contemplating selling.
It's not the sort of car to be sold on a whim so a bit of forward planning seems to make sense in my eyes.
Query on the SMG.
Read various things elsewhere about it being a bit of a pain to use times and appreciate these are probably made by folk who have had a 10 minute drive and haven't got used to both how it works and how to work it.
The main complaint seems to be about jerkiness when using in heavy traffic.
Is this genuinely the case or only so when you're new to using the SMG? Does it have an "auto mode" where you can drive it as an auto in such scenarios or, is it only a paddle change?
Have already gathered it's best not to lift off when changing gear if pushing along a bit
Also read about "throttle blip", does it do this automatically or do you blip it yourself?
Finally, a random question, is there anyone who owns a CSL in the Derby / Midlands region who is willing to let me poke my nose around their car sometime?

Just a quick reply & my thoughts. I love the SMG as its part of the cars character. Learning to use it is part of the fun and bonding with the car.
Never use auto as its crap.
In town only change up when accelerating and don't lift
Never have it less than S5
I lift slightly when giving it the full beans on and off track :gayfight:
Don't pussy foot around or you will get clutch slur. Give it a good thrashing
Careful when parking/manoeuvring as you may get a standing start when you only have a few inches to play with :bigcry: in practice no problem at all.
Blips on down changes are done automatically. :smt055
Others of course may have different advise/experience.

What's peoples general opinion on getting a warranty?
Have noted from other threads that the BMW (if available) can be an eye watering cost :bigcry:
Are the other warranty companies worth bothering with or is it best to avoid them and stick the potential cost of them away as an insurance should things go tits up?
EDIT :- Have spoken to BMW warranty and had a quote of £1300 ish p.a. on a car with 70,000 miles on, that's with a £250 excess. Not drastically bad IMO.

BMW Warranty every time. What is of equal importance is having the backing of a top dealer who has the negotiating know how to deal effectively and successfully when submitting a claim on your behalf.

This will be down to you how you perceive the risk. I don't want to tempt fate but when the original BMW warranty ran out I did not extend it. Touch wood I have had very little go wrong. Others I believe on here have had their cars rebuilt.
Someone will come along to chat about how good warranties are & the options available. There will be a thread somewhere on this topic.

I think it's pretty safe to say it won't be my local dealer. Called in to see the service guy ref servicing costs. Sales bloke bagged me whilst i was in the showroom,
Him :- " Can I help you sir?"
Me :- " Possibly mate, looking for some info on a M3 CSL"
Him :- "Is that a current model Sir?"

Pension paperwork arrived the other day with the final figs on. Saw the accountant today to sort out the best way of sorting the tax liabilities ( they're fairly sortable as I work for my own LTD Co so I can defer salary etc and move things about a bit. All above board.)
So, all forms signed etc and all I have to do now is sit back and be patient, I don't do patience.

First of all, a HUGE thanks to Peter (Trawler )
I took the Mini to 1320 down St Neots way for an oil and filter change and Peter was kind enough to bring his car down to let me actually have a look at one for real as opposed to pictures and videos and also was good enough to take me out for a ride.
It's ok for you lot, you know what the cars are like! I had an idea but it was nowhere near the reality.
Not going to go on about it here as it'd be like preaching to the converted however, to say I was absolutely amazed would be the understatement of the year. The noise is wonderful, the acceleration and handling capabilities are maybe best described as mind numbing.
My Mini isn't what you'd call a slouch but it was, to put it kindly, a bit on the underwhelming side after going in Peters.:hahaha:

Maybe so, with one big but.
If in a CSL, it'll be in the car park. The GP is built ideally now to go on a track so that is the one that will be on the business side of the fence
Famous last words etc
Peter had a bash in it today so no doubt his thoughts will be up later. It's nowhere near the level of a CSL but, for a Mini, it shifts and the way everything has been done on it, it will be at home on a track ( and it isn't my investment!! )

Had a great morning with pops today and it was a pleasure not only to see his car, but a privilege to be offered the chance to drive it. To call his car a mini is a bit like comparing the csl with a 118d and saying they are the same. Pops car is one fast machine with very little torque steer, great brakes and handles beautifully. It feels at home on the tight twisters and fast sweepers. I really would love to have a go on track in it it as I think it would be brilliant.
Cheers pops
Ps forgot to mention the seats and upgraded dash, etc. Class, makes the mini gp1 interior look like cheap plastic

If we ever get to the same track day you'd be more than welcome to take it out.
Just an idea currently drifting around in my head, at work and boredom can be dangerous!
Toying with the idea of moving the GP on and adding the cash to my csl budget.
Have posted the possibility of it going up for sale on a few Mini forums where the car is well known and asked for possible valuations ( have one in my mind but not sure how realistic it is )
My idea is around £15k, not a million miles out as 2 have already said around 13 - 14, which would put my csl budget uo to £50k....hmmm
See what happens!

All depends what you want the CSL for, but I would be very reluctant to let the GP go. The Mini plus a CSL makes a pretty decent combination in the garage IMO
£35k should get you into a clean average-mile CSL, which if you plan to use it a little bit should be ideal. As great as CSLs are, after a while of it being you're only fun car you will start thinking about getting something else again to go with it

Id have £35K is plenty budget to get you into a nice car that you wont be afraid of using ( as opposed to the low mileage garage queens )
The pleasure comes from the driving , not being sat inside the house looking out of the window worrying wether you should have another cup of tea rather than driving the CSL because its raining :bigcry:

And the Mini stays as a fantastic no2 toy.
A £50K garage queen will just bring buckets of stress worrying about adding miles or breaching a mileage figure that lops £10k off the value.
Before you know it, it's in a carcoon and you get to look at it twice a year!!!
Points taken, thank you.
Last thing I'd want a car to be is a garage queen.
I think I'll be sticking with my original plan
Back to something posted early in the thread ( ref mirrors )
Found the width of a csl to 1780mm and no doubt the mirrors will need to be added to that.
As someone has answered they fold up and inwards but, my query is, how much do they fold in?
Had a measure today of the entrance to the garage where it will be kept when off the road and the "tight" entrance gap mentioned earlier is 2200mm.
Any educated guesses if it will fit? Once through the gap there is more than enough space as it opens out.

Because of the shape of the body i'm sure when you fold them in its pretty close to the 1,780mm you mentioned.

Thank you very much mate, that's excellent
Been out for a bit of a blast in the GP.
Makes me wonder why I even considered selling it.
Maybe away too much and forgetting how good it actually is.
Be a wonderful car to run alongside a CSL.

Just had a good run in cesil & the gp this afternoon. Great fun in differnt ways. Must get the cups back on soon. Too much wheel spin in lower gears with the sports.

Lads, going to swap out the RFTs on the GP, and keeping standard wheels on it. Any recommendations? I see I can get MPSS in 205/40-18, and love them on the Cesil, but is there anything else I'm missing?

Don't think you're missing too much, you don't have a deal of choice in 18s.
Going to a 35 profile with the std suspension set up will likely make you a regular customer at your dental surgery.
I run AD08s currently, although on 17s, but with my GP likely to be stashed away for the summer months will be replacing with MPSS when needed.
