. . . came on this eve on the way home. Lasted 5 to 10 seconds then went off and didn't come back on.

Rain this morning, dry this eve.

I found the alternator threads - could it be this?

Ummm, could well be alternator.

Checked battery and still got a decent charge in it although wasn't too far from home when the light flashed.

Will pick up a spare at the weekend just in case.

Yeh, I had one go in my 520 - did exactly as you say. The light was faint and flickering for a few days.

This eve I was in 6th in S5 and put my foot down in a tunnel (as you do!), it dropped a couple of cogs. When I went back to 6th shortly after, the light popped on really bright for a few secs then off it went.

Everything seems ok so, yeh I agree with yourself and Shiekh Shim, alternator on its last legs.

It's almost certainly the alternator letting you know it's about to check out... very common and seems to happen every 35K miles...
Mine's on its 3rd alternator as of 70K miles few years ago. The second alternator was fitted @ 35K miles when Cecil was 3 years young :)

Hmm...may be time to fit a new one as a precautionary measure. Think mine is on about 30k....

No problems today but took the car for a check at Darren Woods and alternator still charging but on its way out so replacement booked in for next week. Agreed better safe than sorry.

Fingers crossed it survives in the meantime.

Thanks for help as always.

Don't forget to take your old one home, plenty of places locally that will rebuild it. ;)

Cheers GD, yeh, it's an emergency thing so at least I can get to a safe place to park up and wait for the very nice man, or home if not too far away; I may get 20 mins out of it.

It'll be sorted this week :)

It always happens at a bad time! My daily is dead so relying on the CSL at the mo until I find a replacement! Grrrrrrrrr !

That's my work route Shim, there's no hard shoulder or very little anyway, same on quite a few parts of the M60 and the nasty M60/61 switch.

It takes about 10 secs to switch batteries and get going again - all in-cabin so no need to put myself & others at risk getting out of car.

The lights not lit since and I'm well over 100 miles now, the batteries charging albeit with slightly reduced output from the alternator.

I'm probably bordering on paranoia now!

Don't worry, I think paranoia is in my nature :smt107

I've run the jumpers into the cabin and popped the spare battery behind the passenger seat - "should" be a quick swap and off again. The M60 is no place to be static.

still going strong but . . .

the battery light doesn't come on when I switch the ignition on - I think it's a wiring problem - unless anyone knows another reason why the light isn't coming on????

Will still replace alternator though.
