M4 is about twice as fast as CSL.

Not driven a M4 but had use of the new M3 for a week and the use of it last Thursday.
Great car, kills the CSL for speed, the handling in the Wet is insane, soooooooo much grip. Done 800 miles in them, all in the rain :(
I would go as far as this would be CSL time at the ring on Pilot Sports, put it on cups and it would be off.

Officially the M4 was two seconds off the CSL at 7m52 vs 7m50 but yeah on cups it'd monster it, probably low 7m40's.

They are both very fast, but one's got a stonking great carbon air-box that makes incredible noises, the other one hasn't.
(there's an Evo article on the CSL Airbox by the way)

What issue is that?

It's on (in ?) the app right now and presumably will be in the next print edition in the 'Art of Speed' section, back page.

"When the M3 CSL hit the streets there were gasps. Here was a hardcore statement of intent.....with 355bhp courtesy of an outrageously in-yer-face fist of a carbon fibre airbox....extending the engine's aerobic reach to new heights.....few engines from anywhere have ever sounded better."
"It's a sound that seductively asserts that the E46 CSL remains the most focused, hardcore M3 of the lot."
etc etc

They'll be growing on me too when the low-deposit, £500/month, 0%, 5yrs Free servicing deals kick off. Until then... the new C63s gets my tail wagging!

I test drove one during BMW M Experience here in Istanbul at Istanbul Park F1 Circuit. Having attended many track days with my CSL there I was able to compare turn speeds, handling etc.
I could safely say except for the noise department the new M4 excels in every possible way. Lag was almost non-existent, handling was perfect, brakes were excellent (ceramics) and power was immense. It is a great car and a fitting M car.
I think BMW cracks this M3 thing in every two generations. E30, E46 and F80 are the best of all, the others are just in-between models IMO.

E36M3 was the 1st mass market M3, and is appreciated more than in recent years. Wonderful ride. Great dedicated track day car, better than the later ones.
The E92 - more difficult to fall in love with this, weight, size, lack of torque & not really track friendly. A grown up M3 that did not pull at the heart strings.

gts = v.nice! If not needing rear seats gts is a no-brainer vs M4, imo.

That latest edition of EVO I mentioned has landed.
We all owe David Vivian a beer, there's some very nice words he's written about our cars.

Dame, they offer cars in the UK on the pennies.:banghead::bigcry:

Nice pics !
The rising door crease/window lines on modern cars is very noticeable on the M4, as taken probably a step too far on the Evoque

Agreed... but only in a straight line ;) I test drove M3/M4 last year back to back and they were just plain embarasing through corners by comparison to Cecil which I drove to the test drive :smt055 ... and then back home, without chopping it in for one of the young guns ;)
The problem was the nature of the TT straight six is just too darn torque peaky when attacking a corner CSL style, with either TC ON which kills power mid corner/ up on enthusiastic exit... or TC Off which just looses traction far too easily by overwhelming the MICHELIN Super Sports into a cloud of smoke.
Oh and the stearing just felt numb... again by comparison to Cecils :supz:

i disagree matt, m4 through the welsh mountain roads was quite and very grippy in the dry, felt nimble to me, much better than the E92

It would do Shimmy as you're comparing the M4 against a heavy E9X ... and I was comparing it against a lightweight & very nimble CSL :smt055 on a back to back test drive on East Anglia's bumpy 'B' roads ;)
