Selling a house in the new year and plan to use some of the equity to buy another fun car which I have not had the pleasure of owning to date.
My budget will be around £25-30k and I have narrowed my choice down to the following:
1. Porsche 997 Carrera S
2. BMW E60 M5 ('07 on facelift model)
3. BMW E90 M3 ('08 on facelift model)
Any thoughts or wild card ideas appreciated!

My mate tried a Carrera S and found it very slow, I would go for the M5/M3

Personally I would stick with either the Porsche if you have never given them a go. My first foray was a GT3 which I love to bits. Or the V8 M3. There is something hypnotic about a V8 rumble. Much as I would love to try an e60 M5, when they go wrong they are very expensive and the tank is too small for a long run - that has to be annoying.

find a nice aircooled Porsche .. might not be quick by modern standards but great fun to drive if you get the right one .... + added bonus of hopefully 0 depreciation unlike the cars you posted above
If it has to be one of the above, then the Porsche. M5 , quick & glorious noise but still a big & heavy saloon car that can't go more than 250 mile sbetween fill ups
M3 .. you've already got a CSL ;)

Wild card would be an E30 M3 or a 968 CS

Stretch it a bit go for stage 4 GTR worth having for a year of fun (ask Shane or Gregor) if buy it with new brakes and tyres reduces cost of ownership. Price held the same for the last year or so so very little depreciation. Does 25-30 mpg 0-60 3sec 0-100 6.5 secs and has a good sound system.

Have you thought about a late (2003-2004) 996 Turbo / Turbo S ? (wild card) as the 997 Carrera S is relatively slow, even by comparison to the CSL.
As for the other 2 "M" cars you mention, they are both currently depreciating like a lead brick wrapped in lead :bigcry: The E60 M5 is a "Big Ol' Bus" ( just like the X5 you already have ;) ) and while the V10 is a great engine, it only comes alive at the top of the revs which IMHO just doesn't suit the 4 door nature of the car on the UK congested roads. It becomes quite tiring, very quickly. Also the build quality of the E60 is questionable and not a patch on the previous generation (E39) M5.
With your budget you could buy the very best E39  probably with an EVOLVE Supercharger :supz: which is a proper "Sleeper" :smokin:
I too discount the E9x M3 as you already have the Cecil

I've clearly got time on my hands today so put together a few other options to consider;
Aston V8 Vantage - scrapes in at 30k plus.
DB9 - as above
Lotus Evora - an early lowish miles one
Maserati Gransport - You'd get a good one for the budget.
Noble M12 - proper wildcard.
£25-30k doesn't quite get you what it once did as not too long ago you'd have been able to get a nice Ferrari 355 or even a Testarossa if you felt very broad of shoulder.
Things for me that are frustratingly close are the Audi R8 and Ferrari 360.
From your original list I'd be very happy in a 997s but, thought the 996 Turbo was a good shout, although they are moving up in price now so you probably won't get an 996TTs (x50) as you would of 12 months ago.
Best value car out there at this level, or just above, has to be something called an M3 CSL..

That's the trouble. Wanted out of mine so test drove a few cars recently. Nothing comes close for the minute so can see another price correction soon to put them more in line with early gt3's. at present there not worth double a Csl

E60 M5 would be (in your case incl. family) a great car. Great Engine.
Before i bought the 997GTS i thought about getting one of the last E90 M3 (like a Spengler Edition) or a Alpina GT3.
But in the end i'm really happy with the 997GTS.

Is an E60 M5 a fun car - or just a sensible fast car? I nearly went for one before deciding on the visceral CSL. I read all the horror stories of the pre-facelift version and a friend who owned one said he was sick and tired of visiting the petrol station - although he was using it as a daily on short runs to be fair. Values dropped like stones too.
What about something more removed - like a Caterham, Atom or Radical? obviously not the best for family motoring but for fun and tracking, they have to be contenders?
Are the cars you mention THAT much different from the CSL to warrant the expense?
If I had a £30k "fun" budget then - e46 M3 track spec and trailer :) anything leftover would go on training and trackdays. Perhaps after a year or two moving to a Radical.

I work shifts now so it would be a nice car for days out with the wife and littlest one whilst the older boys are at school.
The 997 is probably my favourite at the moment but perhaps a nice 997 or E93 cab would be nice for next summer... :gayfight:

All GT3 RS > GBP 100,000

Rick's on the money here. Go on www.racecarsdirect.com (http://www.racecarsdirect.com) and you'll pick up a sorted, caged, ready-to-race E36 or E46 with a trailer and, with no disrespect to the CSL, you'll have a much better time on track. And I also agree that if it's a fun car for high days and holidays, why not go for something less practical and more of a different experience? The M5 is certainly not a patch on a CSL.
I owned a 997 Carrera S for a while, with all the right sports options. I paid £34k at the time. It was a love/hate affair. On the plus side, it was a unique driving experience, evocative noise, sat low and it looked beautiful. On the down side, it was nagging me that it wasn't a GT3, everyone HATES you in a Porsche and my car was unreliable and expensive to maintain.
As for the fast Datsun, I've got a stage 4.25 sat on my drive and it ticks all the boxes. It destroys anything in a straight line and with the Litchfield suspension, it actually handles well too. On the downside, it's phenomenally thirsty and the interior feels like a £10k car.
If it were my £30k, I'd buy an M3 race car and a trailer for £20k and a well-sorted Caterham.

Had it just over a year now, well 18 months and done 15k in it, its soooo bloody good as an all rounder, dropping little one off at nursery or pulling into a customers place it doesn't really shout look at me, more a nicely specced C class saloon to those who don't know.
But when you want it to be its shouts ' fuck you ' and roars and spits and rumbles so much even just starting in the morning puts a smile on the face lol.
Seriously one hell of a car for 35k, awesome seats, music system and effortless cruiser, autobahn weapon.
Don't buy one without LSD and Perf Pack is a nice addition.
Tis a keeper this one, once finances allow and house move sorted in Jan next year going on a 50/50 E46 track car project, C63 as the daily.

not driven one to compare, but would think the SL bit more of a boat, the 63 actually handles very well, just needs a V3 kit to make more useable for track work, and nicer stance etc.
It loves to go sideways at any opportunity and waggle it rear even in the dry :smokin:

Pondering a C63 AMG estate in the next year or so - surely the new model out next spring will impact the prices further?
Do you ever pay attention to the fuel consumption or is it a case of a minor downsides?

Actually prefer the Saloon/Estate to the coupe, both lovely.
They will probably drop a bit I reckon with new model out, so worth waiting to see.
It's not too bad, general around town sensible driving 17/19, motorway cruise 24/26, but in Germany and when pushing on single figures.
So not as bad as you would think.

Rears get eaten quickly, although once the cold weather finally arrives to stay, the winters are going on again, they help massively in the wet and colder temps, hardly worn the vredestein's between Nov-March last year, so does help the tyre budget and grip levels using winters.

Good to hear!
Re the winters, do you keep a spare set of alloys/wheels ready to go or get 4 tyres changed over (and then back again in March)?

That's the plan when I have some spare funds, currently just winters get swapped onto std wheels, so one set.
Probably going for a set of OZ Ultralegga's as the spare set or summer wheels, keep the std multispokes for winter.
There is a lovely estate run by a chap in Germany on the OZ's and KW V3's

I put 265's on the rear of my 63 saloon - fit a treat on 19" rims. I've also heard 275's fit too. Obviously 255's better for that tail-wagging exit from junctions :smokin:

Same, only had 265 on the vreds and so running 265 on both summer and winters now.
