View Full Version : Pork or chicken?

So I've spent the day looking at a Gen 1 997 GT3 and a Gen 2. One is at £65k and one is at £85k. As I feared would happen, looking at a Gen 2 has completely now overshadowed the older car. It's sublime. It's also right at the very top of my price range and so I'm a prime candidate for chickening out instead of just diving in. The fact that I haven't quite sold the CSL yet is sitting on my mind a bit. Plus there's the small issue of not having a garage that I can put the car in - it's going to be on my drive until I move house.
Anyway, my question for the team is: do you think that 997 GT3 prices have topped out? If I go for a Gen 2, am I looking at an appreciating asset (like the CSL) or will it drop like a stone. I'm nervous about this because I lost almost £10k in 9 months on the last 911 I bought. :banghead:

Personally I think GT3 prices are at their very peak at the minute. They rocketed over the last few months, why I do not know.
To answer your question unless it is an RS I do not believe you are looking at an appreciating asset with either phase. They will drop before levelling out especially when 991GT3 prices start to drop in a few years. Current 996 GT3 prices are eventually where 997 model are going to end up.
On a side not, looking at a Gen 2 was a bad idea. Big price difference but as you said massively more developed and make the Gen 1 like sitting in a 996 by comparison

Bit like Chris, I think these have gone too high now. If it's not RS or GT2, I can't see them being a potentially good investment
Saying that, if I had to put all my chips on something Pork as an investment, it'd be a 3.3 964 or 930 Turbo
I had a gen2 (2010, PCCB's, lift etc) and whist it was an epic car, i don't think it's currently £20k better than a gen1. Both cars will give the same thrills. I'd be wanting the cheapest gen1 Clubsport with official Porsche warranty - which you can extend until it's 10 years old. You don't need any fancy extras like sat-nav, lift, sports-chrono etc.

Unless you REALLY want it, I wouldn't get into pork at current prices unless I was buying new (991 RS).

997 gen 2 gt3 is sublime.
I have a 7.2 rs which i drive on occasion but a regular 7.2 gt3 is equally epic. i wouldn't hesitate if you want to try something different. If on track only, the gen 1 will be a better bang for buck but if you are using it as a road car with occasional track use, the gen 2 wins hands down.

Two years ago I was looking to buy a 997 Gen 1, but got a good deal on a Gen 2 which really stretched me financially, but I am so glad I did. It is a development cycle along and such a great car. Go for the Gen II, otherwise it will always be in the back of your mind that you compromised.
Enjoy the opportunity while you can.

stretch yourself Gregor. GT3 prices are only going one way and with the metzger engine in the back they will keep on going up!
the gen 2 is supposed to be the best of all so go for that if I was you. you will only look back or see one on the road and hate yourself!
a 7.2 RS just made 200k so its all to play for.
