Hi all, I'm getting compulsive thoughts that I need to buy a CSL again, this time to keep! At the moment I have a budget of £30-31k to spend but may be able to dig a bit deeper and push the boat out if the right car came along.

What's everyones thoughts, I had SB last time so should I go Black this time? I don't mind if its slower  (colour obviously subjective but be interesting to get opinions)

Also thoughts on mileage, it's a second car so not to be driven much and kept good, say 2-3k a year. £32k seems to get something around 60k, but would it be worth £2k extra to get a 50k car or again finding £6k for one of Nick Johnson's cars around 25k-35k.

What about the Irish car Nick has for sale, is there any stigma attached to it with it not being a UK car? (assuming it being Irish means Irish Republic)

Welcome back mate

Where it is from shouldn't really matter...condition and maintenance is what is important. I bought mine in Mayo and imported to the UK last year...a good low mileage, well-cared for example, best one I'd seen. Only problem I had is the roads...stone chip heaven :bigcry:

I think NJ's Irish car had its running in service at around 2,000 miles. Personally I don't see this as a big issue provided the price reflects this.

As long as it's not over 2000 miles it's no issue at all.

Why would there be a stigma? Many of the E30 M3s in the UK are ex-Germany or Italy and that doesn't seem to have affected prices. A good CSL is a good CSL period IMO

I'm from Northern Ireland and the border is less than an hour away, folk used to get cars over it all the time but the specs where always European specs rather than UK and never finished to the same standard.

Therefore I thought I'd ask the question in case due to UK legislation or some other EU regulation the cars where slightly different therefore perhaps not as attractive to UK drivers.

That was the rational behind the question.

Ah. I guess I was trying to share my experience of buying an Irish CSL more than anything else.

Re: the specs, AFAIK only two CSLs were sold in Ireland from new, and both were UK specs anyways (mine being one of the two).

NJs car for sale...if it is the car I think it is...I believe this was Brian's (Cork area), aka Hankcharlie on here. Might be worth touching base with him for more info on the history.

I gave Brian a shout about this on another forum Paddy, but he may be away. I've not seen his CSL myself, but his brother used to own my E34 M5 and they're proper car guys, so I suspect it's a good one

Why would there be a stigma?

That’s because you’re all Hallions down there... I’m only joking! :hahaha:

But Southern cars did have a stigma up her in the big bad North, people seen Southern cars to be rough given the poor roads conditions etc. but all that is changing, you now have some of the best roads anywhere, its just price, spec & being calibrated in kilometers that would put people of.

Spec shouldn’t affect this car, as I believe it was imported from the UK originally?

A customer/friend is thinking of a CSL & mentioned this car to me weekend past, he mentioned the owner by name but I’ve since forgot, for some reason I think the owner could be central Ireland & not Cork, could be wrong.

Hi Jeff. Yes, if it is Brian's car, I have no doubt it is a good example.

I'm actually meeting up with the previous owner of mine next weekend, who I suspect will have some more info on this particular CSL. Leave it with me folks.

Ah yeah, I know, although for something like a CSL it shouldn't make much difference, as they should all be the same spec
Although we never really salted the roads much here in the winter, and certainly nothing in comparison to England in particular

Dangerous game Paddy, he may want to buy it back from you ;)

Hi John and welcome back to the fold

The majority of cars supplied (of the 422) were designated: "allocation: United Kingdom & Ireland" a few however were noted as "Great Britain", all supplied via BMW UK for distribution.
I can only assume that the only difference would be the speedo calibration which would have been done by BMW UK prior to shipping?

Rep. of Ireland was still MPH, not KPH, in 2003/4 Neil. There should be no difference between an Irish car and a UK one that I know of, except the massively inflated list price over here when new (€120k IIRC)

Cheers Neil that all makes sense. I thought it wouldn't matter but you gotta ask these questions. Interesting that there was UK & Ireland cars then GB cars.

You’re right about the salt, I use to go with a girl from Co.Wexford & people use to say it was in my head but all you had to do was look at the hedgerows & it would be covered/splashed in like a light grey soot which I’ve never seen anywhere else, I don’t know how much more or less corrosive it is but it washes of a lot easier, plus salt in the UK has a grit/sand in it.

When you say UK & Ire. are you referring to N.Ireland or Irish Republic?

I was told many moons ago that there was no CSL’s sold brand new in Ireland (Republic) & that each of the Northern Irish BMW dealers had to take one, so if that is correct that would’ve been 4 sold here which would count 4 of the 422 UK cars.

:hahaha: You're not wrong Jeff...withdrawal symptoms are well and truly in. He'll be back in one yet!

There were two sold in the Rep from new as far as I know...mine was originally sold by Conaln's in Kildare. I was told about the other but can't remember for the life of me where it sold.

The other original Irish CSL was sold by Joe Duffy BMW in Dublin and had some bodywork needing repair within a few days as the owner took it for a spin in the wet and had not quite got to "grips" with those special CSL tyres. ;)

Hi gents, the csl for sale in Nicks is indeed my car. It is a standard UK spec, as it left the factory. Clocks were in MPH from day one. Subframe repair is being done at the moment due to a small hairline crack found, and should be complete any day now. Original car from new registered in the Republic or Ireland. Any questions please don't hesitate to contact Nick Johnson who is selling it on my behalf. I got a compression test done before I brought it over to Nick and the engine is 100%. I will miss and regret selling but I am in the process of buying a new house so it needs to go unfortunately. I will have another some day tho! Awesome machine. I'm sure whoever buys it will have lots of fun and enjoyment out of it. Cheers lads.
