HI,
Does anyone know the history behind this car on PH?
http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/bmw/e46-m3-00-06/bmw-e46-m3-csl-track-specification/2630903?isexperiment=true
It first appeared on Nick Johnson and now is offered for sale privately
I'm looking for a CSL as a toy to drive to track days and back. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Car used to belong to Chicken http://www.cslregister.com/forum/search.php?searchid=604902
He bought it from NJ, it was an ex cup shell that was built into the car / id of the car NJ crashed at the ring.
Im pretty certain thats the story, ive seen it and inside its stunning. Others may be able to tell you more or perhaps even NJ, I met Chicken at NJ's & saw the car there a couple of years back.

NJ had it up for 25,995 at the start of 2014
very brave decision to go with the full cage......I bottled it with just the rear cage.
Actually saw this car at Simpsons getting the treatment. Top job from the Gloucester boys...as always!!

thanks. the link doesn't work.
I wanted to use the car for track days so the cage is not a problem at all. in fact i welcome it.
u say the cup shell was crashed? Any evidence to back it up?
It will be my first attempt with a paddle shifter so I'd hope to bag a good one that i can use properly on track days.

No the shell as it is (cup car shell from thorney I was told) wasn't crashed, all the bits fitted to the shell came from a CSL that NJ bent at the ring on an RMA day I think. Call NJ he knows it well.

Was a Thorney motorsport csl cup car, shell was purchased from them and built back in to a road car. Has / had the airbox from my car on it.

so effectively a CSL race car mixed with a crashed CSL and Nathan's airbox.
id buy it if it wasnt for Nathan's airbox being involved

At low 20s it was a great buy for a track car, at £40k you'd be classified as properly mental.
It is a lovely thing, just not £40k lovely.

List price of 25K?
Seems a reasonable price Nathan....especially if the interior is still with the car!!

Shimmy taking into account the provenance attached to "the csl previously owned by the shimster" we're talking a shit load of cash.;)

Any evidence to back it up?
This might be the one the parts came off :bigcry: (or has he crashed more?) Seems irrelevant though if Simpsons sourced a replacement shell. Body parts are just parts. I'd be more curious as to the engine history. If all in order and you want a track car, seems like a good buy.

Gents and Ladies,
This car is now mine. And, it is awesome.
it is the thorney motorsport race car shell and vin with parts from the crashed CSL above.. Car is phenomenal and well, the stiffness, unbelievable. Feels even stiffer than my 7.2 RS. What a great base.
The exhaust is currently too loud. Previous owner thinks it is stock but I can't help but think that maybe a crack has developed somewhere. Anywho, off to Simpson's for them to give it some TLC soon.
The steering wheel is shot. I would like a new one. How much is one and where should i acquire it? Similarly, the carbon rear console has bits of lacquer falling off and is yellowed quite badly. Can this be repaired? The passenger carbon door card also has some milt spots as does the rear bottom diffuser (which also has some chipped lacquer). Other than these cosmetic bits, mechanically the car feels great.
I am glad i made the plunge.:smt055

Get Mark CSL to sort the carbon bits out while you enjoy as many track days as possible in it.
Adem has a thread on the steering wheel retrim but think the company are waiting on the alacantra.
Came across this car at Snetterton once but must of been on call down laps.

From memory the door cards were modified by Simpsons to accommodate the cage? They can sort cosmetic bits, properly good at composite work.

yes they were modified to fit the roll cage. Well done really.
what kind of battery do you guys use. The current Simpson supplied one is a super dinky braille racing battery that frightens me every time i crank it up. I would rather sacrifice a few pounds and get a decent/normal one. Any recommendations?
ALso, how do you tell the service is needed? it doesn't seem to have the normal bmw indicator lights....
Thanks

I'd make the trip to Simpsons, however if you can't make it there I'd give George at Technosport a shout.

Hi,
I dropped my car off at simpsons motorsport.
1) Turns out the discs have hairline cracks that are about 10mm from the edge so new front PF discs will be put on. I was advised that road cars are not suited to floating disc setup as they would rattle terribly. What's the benefit of a floating setup?
2) The KW clubsports will be inspected and then refurbed if necessary followed by geo and corner weight. Do you guys know who simpsons would use for that. Don't think i saw an alignment machine at their shop.
3) I wanted to replace the 10 year old cooling system with an oem new one and was advised to remove the thermostat with an insert that basically allows more flow with the downside of necessitating a longer warm up time. Sounds reasonable since this is not my daily but rather my track slag " er no, let's call it track mistress", running it in winter where i fear the car may never get to op. temps on the road isn't really an issue. anyone else tried this? Any thermostat is restrictive but i understand it's uses in getting engine temps up quickly.
4) Now for the biggie, should I remove the AC? It doesn't work now but Julian said it could be a failed pump and should be an easy fix. I'm not really bothered by heat but saying that, the last spa trip i did was in april and i am intending to make next years DN11 in july so I may regret this. I am leaning towards AC removal as I have other cars, amg c63 and a gt3 rs for fun and resale isn't an issue for me... it has 115k miles on the engine and apparently still going strong.....
5) front pu is getting painted along with carbon repair work on the centre console, passenger door and rear diffuser.
6) exhaust is extremely loud and Simpsons think the muffler is not doing its job. Will be sticking on an regular m3 muffler lying around the shop to se if that solves the problem. ...i hate worrying about passing noise tests on track.
thoughts guys?

Saw it today whilst I was down working on the f40lm mentioned in the other thread.
Simpsons do their own geo, they do have the electronic kit but 99% of the time it is done the proper way with string :)

cars back.
ac removed although Julian advised that I should retain the AC fan as it switches on when water temp is above 95 C. He reckons it will be generating more airflow with it on than complete removal. Oh, no motorsport thermostat as he reckons it doesn't flow more just open sooner.
front and rear bumper re-painted,
centre console refurb, still not the best but it was in really bad shape.
steering wheel re-trimmed by royal steering wheels
new handbrake
new gear knob
inspection 2
all fluids changed
Calipers re-built all round.
new PF discs
all fluids replaced.
oil cooler changed to new OEM one
Turner RTAB limiter
spherical bushing for RTA
alignment for track and road
exhaust leak fixed (broken gasket)
new headlamp covers
new automatic brake pedal
now pic.s
