View Full Version : Vanos noisy

Looks (and sounds) like I have a Vanos issue with the red car. It sounded like a sticky starter to begin with however I had someone else start the car and realised the noise was coming from the front. Went round with the stethoscope and you can hear it clear as day cracking away inside the unit.
Its like a metallic clunk, I likened it to hitting a shovel with a hammer.
So what's my options then?
Any ideas?

MIGHT be a blocked oil feed pipe!!!
You can start the car and loosen the bolt ontop of the vanos feed pipe just to see how much oil comes out!
The filter on the valve could be blocked!!

Another thing I noticed was the car seemed down on power when pulling out the Hairpin in 2nd. when up in 3rd the car would all of a sudden "perk up" a bit once up in the top 1/2 of the rev range.
Don't know if this has anything to do with it but just seemed weird as none of this was noticed while over in Germany.

How much fuel in the tank at the time?1/4 tank?sounds like fuel starvation it flows the fuel to the left of the tank causing a surge so loss in power as it uses whats in the filter.once you straighten up it flows fuel to the right side and you get power back.
How much oil do you run on track?
6.5 ltr is the amount but if you add half ltr it stops oil starvation on hard corners!!
Take the oil pressure switch out n check oil pressure in that case!you may have a damaged oil pump running it dry
I ruined my followers starving the oil to the top!!

Cheers Adam,
I run with 1/2 tank of fuel at the start of each run so that shouldn't be the issue.
As for oil its just on Max line on dipstick.

does it idle normally? On the old E36 M3, my vanos was continually in one place and made the car idle rough, but it ran fine. It turned out to be blocked vanos filter which is a really small cup mesh.
If you have knocking that could well be something else, but a vanos filter is so cheap you may want to give a go before heading to the more expensive options.
Should be the same for the CSL:

I replaced the filter as I have a box of these. Its something I do on the CSL every year. The original was fairly dirty so fingers crossed.
Cant get it out as sold the Alcons and awaiting Alex to get back from vacation to get the replacements but it seems to be making less noise on idle anyway.

get all beisan parts and do a rebuild! Bulletproof your vanos and make sure you change upper chain guide too.

never heard of them doing it. Do a full rebuild and not just the little filter.

my first vanos lasted 75k miles. The next 4 considerably less distance.

Nope... strangely it's not part of any of the scheduled services :banghead: You have to request this, which I've done on couple of occasions with mine.
The Vanos filter is only about £10 and less then half an hour worth of labour. Gareth did mine during the last "Inspecion 1" by request.

I got mrvanos to do mine, he traveled down from Darlington to Solihull with a reconditioned vanos, changed the vanos, the cam sprocket bolts, the top chain guide, gaskets, seals, filter and retimed the engine and gives a 2 year guarentee on his work!! Saves hashing it up yourself with besian parts and he tells me the instructions they supply are incorrect anyway!!
