View Full Version : BMW 3 Series Recall

I came across this on the M5Board.com :-

BMW will recall roughly 1.6 million of its 3 Series luxury cars worldwide because of possibly faulty passenger side airbag inflators that could rupture.

In an official statement, BMW said the affected models were built between the 1999 and 2006 model years and that the recall campaign is voluntary. The company didn’t say how many of the affected vehicles were sold in the U.S. The company plans to replace the passenger-side airbags because it shares a supplier with other companies using the same airbags that have, in rare cases, were affected by rupturing gas generators.

Today’s announcement is an expansion of a campaign BMW announced last year recalling 240,000 E46 3 Series vehicles. At the time, BMW’s equipment supplier specified a production period in which it produced the faulty airbags, but it has since expanded that period.

Yes, read somewhere that it can rupture causing loose pieces to fly if airbag is deployed. Some of those over on cutters have got the recall letter. I can't seem to find the exact production period affected, just the general statement above.

Anyone on here get one?

Where's the recall list?

Realistically there's no reason the CSL (and normal M3) shouldn't be included in the recall. Passenger airbag is the same part number as in every other E46

Hmm, who is getting on the blower to the dealers regarding CSLs? (Not me I am afraid as I am away )

I'll ask Emma @ Elms tomorrow while my Cecil is having his fluids changed.

E46 M3 (CSL wannabe) is on recall list and have the letter.

When they talk about 'Side airbags' are they not talking about the ones in the doors? If so, ours don't have them... Make a right mess of the CF door card if it does! lol

The ones in the A-Pillars? They not referred to as 'Curtain airbags'?

Just dropped my car off at elms stansted for some work and was told it is subject to the recall for passenger airbag. Bit confused given what's on this thread but not too bothered if it's just the airbags (not planning on using them anyway...)

Passenger airbag updated, when in for Inspection I yesterday at Williams Manchester.
Come on boys what you waiting for, get it done, it's not that often that BMW do something for free!
Note: Recall applies to all E46 models including CSL, failure to submit for update could invalidate your warranty!

Same here. I asked Emma @ Elms when my Cecil was in for it's Service few months ago.
She checked online and gave it the all clear, as in no passenger air bag recall necessary on my car.

That's strange as they seem to be changing them free of charge here in Switzerland.

It does seem very odd Alex... :smt017 Usually the CH BMW Stealers give nothing away for free ;)

That is rather odd. When I spoke to my dealer here in Western Australia they said nothing was outstanding for it - in the mean time things could have changed..

The Dealers were probably sent the information, get it booked in Craig, if only for the Passenger AirBag. Keep Mondial sweet if you have a warranty! :supz:

Car has warranty, but needs new front hub after last track event, so car stuck at home until I get it done by Adem, fitting new hub, and converting to studs and nuts for track use.

Strange reply from Emma, as the recall is on all E46 3 series cars, fitted with a passenger airbag.
Exclusivity doesn't exclude the CSL from being part of the E46 3 Series family, mine's sorted. ;)

Received nothing. BMW responsibility to inform - they have my address.

Fail to see how a warranty can be invalidated due to something I'm unaware of.

Well I asked BMW Ireland and they confirmed the car is included, so it's all booked in. If they're prepared to replace something for free while I ogle the receptionist and nick all their biccies then happy days! :)

Just hope they don't try to replace the ones in the doors ;)

Just spoke to Sytner. Was informed there was one outstanding recall regarding the passenger airbag. It's now booked in for the day next week.

Mine went into Eastern BMW in Edinburgh today for work to fix the slight bubbling under the plastic striker plate covers on the B posts - being done under bodywork warranty. I asked them in advance about the recall & they said yes, so that's being done at the same time. Not sure if they would have done this if I hadn't mentioned though.

Would have got them to do a brake fluid change & change the 2 DSC pressure sensors (me supplying them - bought through Cotswold BMW dealer as a fair bit cheaper) but they wanted an additional £174.52 to change the sensors on top of the £87.26 for the fluid change (me supplying the brake fluid too). I don't think so - I'll get this work done elsewhere.

THANX for your info Jeff... my Cecil's build date was 15.07.2003 and UK road registered on 01.09.2003.
I wonder why some CSLs get the recall but not the others :smt017
