So the new M4 sets a lap time of 7m 52 seconds, still 2 seconds off the CSL.
Does anyone know if this was on cup/cup2 as I can only read about sticky michelins?
If on Cups and 10 years on these cars are surely going to keep rising!!

Pretty good time though . . . only 4 secs off the £120k GTS
Was the M4 lap the same distance as the CLS lap?

Yeah it will be, they get rid of the cones at the end of the day at the old pits to allow proper full laps. Lamborghini were doing it last time I was there.

Wonder what the time will come down to when someone turns up the wick on the M4?

bit warmer and on the new cup 2 tyre that would be closer to 7m 25 or 30.
game has moved on a lot. Tyres as well as the car
the cup 2 is supposed to be awesome. Went to Goodwood with Michelin and techy guy was telling me all about the cup 2. All the supercars n big hybrids run them bar Ferrari who are on Pirelli.

What's interesting about the new M4 is the ease with which the power can be upped by tuners. Litchfield was at DN10 with a new M4, not a GTR. Should be a bigger market to address, probably quite easy to extract more power relatively cheaply.
I asked Ian what he thought about the M4 and he said it's a difficult car to improve. He loved it. Looked very nice in the flesh, I thought.
But I still wouldn't have it over Cesil.
As a profit center, I believe ///M division will make more $$$ from these new M3 M4's, but as a market segment leader, its nowhere to be seen for people that patron forums like this.
CSL is from a different era and still in my mind the ultimate representation of ///M division (I'm biased :blalalala:)
///M2 would be interesting though as the history correlates very well with the 2002 turbo. :smokin:
Saw a 220i today and it looks really nice. Has decent proportions.

For me, I'm not much interested in M division cars now. In my opinion they last had an equivalent GT3 aimed car with the CSL. That was the last time BMW put out a roadcar product that was just about, give or take, 996 GT3 level.
Forget all this tuned bollocks, I'm talking oem standard cars.
Since then they've chased a different market and are worse for it. Porsche march on producing single minded drivers cars. BMW go for mass produce and widely appealing cars. That's OK and the name of the game is to make money but imagine how great their appeal would be if they just for once said fuck it, let's produce a bonkers car for the enthusiasts.
Porsche produce a bonkers road car that makes the basis for a highly successful GT racing division.
BMW produce the Z4 GTR, GT3 spec racer and you can't buy anything like the equivalent road car. I had slightly more respect for the situation when they raced the E92 M3 GTR but they never backed that up with a proper GT3 specified road car. Forget the GTS because that doesn't cut it.
Therefore I've lost interest, stick with the CSL and pine after the latest greatest 991 GT3 and coming RS.
I live in hope for a proper, ballsy M2 but I fear I'll be disappointed.

That's where the new M3 should be in the 7.40's to keep pace with all the other manufacturers, especially with the Megane's breathing down their necks at 7.54.
They need to release some more power with an update (like McLaren did to new cars and retrospectively with the supplied cars), as the articles are showing the 0-60's being 4.2 instead of the claimed 4.1. hopefully get lap time into 7.48's / 7.49's
If they bring a light weight version out as its been spoken about on here, I reckon it will still be behind stk 991.
Also I have a sneaky gut renching feeling the new C class AMG will be in front!
Game over!:banghead:
At this rate CSL's could be the last of the great M3's, will be good for the values though:hahaha:

7:52 is not bad on SuperSports.
Put it on cups and it will be under 7:50
Put it on the newer cup2 and it will be lower again, the fast times the FWD hatches have being setting was on cup 2's. Which is a very sticky tyre for dry/wet use on track.

yes, but that argument can be used on competing machinery.
Worse thing of all is the M3/M4 has lost its roots. High revving power plant. They should have just produced a branch off vehicle like Porkie does and the brilliant AMG's.
I mean even a decent hot hatch will keep it humble is telling you they have lost their edge big time.
The time only means so much, but if Porsche can still build a screaming NA GT3 engine, why can't BMW.
In the E46 era, the M3 was hands down the KING. E90/92 Era, AMG was coming fast and furious, now the AMG's seem to have clobbered it where it matters and even the dull Audi's are surpassing it. Those RS models aren't half bad nowadays. I guess owning lambo helps them abit.
Yea its new and pretty, but its lost its USP. Not only that, it didn't innovate and capitalize on its market lead. Shame on Bimmer and ///M division.

I completely agree, just saying the M4 can put in a faster time, maybe as low as 7:40 on cups.
But agreed if 911's can do it in the 7:30 and below region, makes BMW look rather slow, but also in fairness an M4 cost far less than a 911.
Saying that the Cayman S is probably faster round the Ring too which is similar money.
Different cars for different people, depends on your needs.
Talking all out performance, track orientation then the closest BMW ever got to Porsche was as others have said the E46 M3 CSL and that is why CSL values are so high, its their best M car!

The 911 GT3 was more expensive than the M3 CSL. The CSL had no problem being faster ...

You know what I mean cups are ten years old and tyre technology has come a long way. The new version released this year is a superior tyre.

im not convinced
my knowledge of michelin recently was that they were extra keen to produce a track tyre with better wet performance, lower road noise, cheaper
construction, better mpg
if im wrong thats great as i will
buy them but my gut feel is Cups are faster

Shimmy I reckon your right as they only compare it to the cup+ and they are crap when pushing on, best buy shit loads of cups in advance

They need a screaming 3.8L straight six with 450bhp, and ca 1400kg to do better the csl I think.
New M3 is very good car but has lost its ethos of what it was all about for us BMW loyals/fanatics and I feel long term it will lose them sales as it doesn't stand above the crowd.
I'm sticking it out for the time as I placed my order for a m3 last week for my new daily, I hope I have done the right thing and it's not misplaced trust with BMW!
