Performance Driver ‘Track’ Day
An action-packed day run by CAT Driver Training Ltd at Millbrook Proving Ground.
CAT Driver Training is run by Colin and Jo Hoad. Colin used to work for a leading motor manufacturer in the UK as a Vehicle Evaluator and Driver Trainer and has gained extensive experience and qualifications in driver instruction. This includes being certificated to instruct at Millbrook. His life has been spent working with his passion: motor cars - from racing minis to the race preparation of performance cars. He has much experience of vehicles on both road and track and brings a very different approach to driver enjoyment.
The day is a fast moving experience for up to 8 owners and their cars to introduce the secrets of performance driving. It is designed to be informative, exciting and fun. The group size is purposefully kept small so that the maximum can be obtained from the day in a highly personalised environment.
There is access to the 5 unique circuits at the renowned Millbrook Proving Ground, a venue that is not normally accessible for ‘track days’ and the general public.
Activities designed for the different circuits are:
• Learn ‘threshold’ braking from 100+mph on the ‘Mile Straight’
• High speed driving, potentially to the maximum of your car, on the banked circuit of the ‘High Speed Circuit’
• Drive the demanding ‘Alpine Route’ circuit with its hills, and variety of corners from hairpins to long and sweeping
• Take on the tight, twisty and challenging ‘Handling Circuit’
• Put a car through its paces on the wide open spaces of the ‘Steering Pad’/Mile Straight Apron
An instructor will accompany you on all the circuits, and the objective is to teach you how to get the best from your car and develop your performance driving skills in a controlled environment and at a pace you are comfortable with.
Short presentations in vehicle dynamics will help you to understand the relationship between driver input and vehicle balance and control. From this comes the appreciation of how to safely drive your vehicle at ‘grip limit’ within the controlled confines of a track environment.
At the end of the day, your new found skills can be put to the test in a timed ‘shoot out’ around a gymkhana-style course laid out on the ‘Steering Pad/Mile Straight Apron’. This will be conducted in one of CAT Driver Training’s track prepared cars (normally a Subaru Impreza or a Caterham 7).
Included in the day are:
• Professional in car tuition
• Access to 5 unique circuits at Millbrook Proving Ground
• Mechanical support from a professional race engineer
• Lunch and refreshments during the day
• Timed end of day ‘shoot out’ in one of CAT’s track prepared cars
• Full emergency services on hand all day
• 1½ hours driving time with your personal instructor
Price £340 per person

* All details to be forwarded directly to CAT using the proceedure below *
To confirm your place, payment will need to be made in full by 31st March 2009 directly to CAT at the very latest (Payment can be made by bank transfer, cheque or debit and credit cards. The latter attract merchant fees currently of 1.85% of the value (1.94% as of 1st March)). A non-refundable * deposit of £175 can be made now to reserve your place if this is easier for you, with the balance paid by the due date. Note: this day is for a maximum of eight people. Places will be given on a first paid first served basis.
I will need the following information from you to prepare your confirmation pack and for security purposes at Millbrook:
Name
Address
Contact Number
Email address
Vehicle on the day
Number Plate
Colour of vehicle
You need to hold a full driving licence and this must be brought with you to Millbrook to be checked on the day.
Please either call me: 01234 757633 or email me: info@catdrivertraining.co.uk with your details requested above plus most importantly your payment method. If you wish to send a cheque our address is: 50 Lincroft, Cranfield, Beds. MK43 0HT and they should be made payable to CAT Driver Training Ltd.
Confirmation packs will be sent out once all members have paid in full.
* If we do not get the full 8 members required, it is possible that the day will still go ahead so long as there is a minimum of 4 people. With 6 it can still run but odd numbers of 5 or 7 do not work. CAT will make the decision based on interest at 31st March 2009. If there are less than 4 people paid up at this time then those that have paid will have their deposits/full payments refunded to them, less any merchant fees.

Incase any people are worried :gayfight:
Over exertion of the car?
As to spanking your car, the day is structured to allow steady progression of your driving skill and ability. We never push people further than we feel they can go in the time allowed. Your safety and the condition of your vehicle is the priority throughout the day. We always remember that you have to drive your car home! There is ample opportunity to allow your car to cool down in between sessions - this ensures brakes and mechanical parts are not overheated.
Damage to tyres?
After a Performance Track Day you will not need to change your tyres. We have the benefit, unlike disused airfields, of being able to use a facility that is honed for vehicle evaluation and driver training. On the High Speed Circuit - 2 mile banked circuit - you will be able to potentially experience VMAX in your car. If we move on to the Mile Straight you will quite comfortably be braking from 120mph to the vehicles limit of adhesion - to give it its correct title - threshold braking. At no time will you find yourself in a situation where you are stressing the vehicle to the point that you will experience a high tyre wear rate. Our objective is always to give you a training experience that you can build on on the road or on the track, without compromising the condition of your vehicle. If we felt the training would damage your vehicle then we would use a CAT vehicle designed for the job.
Noise: So long as your car is not noisier than a Le Mans Formula 1 prototype then you are ok! These cars are tested at Millbrook with no issue over noise levels so you should be fine.
Spectators: as the facility is a Proving Ground there is no access for pedestrians around the circuits.
Insurance
Millbrook Proving Ground is a private off road facility. Due to the nature of the work carried out there your normal road insurance would not cover you on the circuits.
We work closely with Competition Car Insurance (previously known as Eger Lawson) who are part of Towergate. They will provide insurance cover for the trainees vehicle on our training days at Millbrook if you feel this will give you peace of mind, but each quote is based on the persons own circumstances and most importantly the value of your car.
For a quote you need to state that you are attending a CAT Driver Training day and reinforce that it is one to one instruction on circuit. They suggested that this key fact will generally reduce the quote by up to a half.
Some discounts are offered for our clients on annual policies.
The telephone number to call is 0115 941 6146. Please then ask for the Track Day / Event Department.

I've had to take my name off the list I'm afraid. I won't get home until the 8th May and I still have to get from Central Scotland to Millbrook. And thats proividing I get off on time, which at the moment is very unlikely. I'm sorry, its just too close to chance.
Will keep an eye on the posts though and if there is any chance I can make it and there's a space available, I'll take it. Was looking forward to it too.

Yeah, I would love to learn some drifting as I'm not very confident with it. Wouldn't mind impressing my wife with a few drifts round the local roundabouts. :hahaha:

Each attendee will be with their instructor for 1.5 hours across the day as 'free access' within Millbrook is not permitted.
Activities designed for the different circuits are:
• Learn ‘threshold’ braking from 100+mph on the ‘Mile Straight’
• High speed driving, potentially to the maximum of your car, on the banked circuit of the ‘High Speed Circuit’ - looking at vehicle balance at high speed, correct focal point, as well as technical aspects such as compliance steer and bump steer
• Drive the demanding ‘Alpine Route’ circuit with its hills, and variety of corners from hairpins to long and sweeping - covering advanced road and track cornering techniques
• Take on the tight, twisty and challenging ‘Handling Circuit’ - covering advanced road and track cornering techniques
• Put a car through its paces on the wide open spaces of the ‘Steering Pad’/Mile Straight Apron - exploring understeer and oversteer plus stability programmes
Plus the end of day gymkhana using either our Caterham 7 or Subaru Impreza.
Please give us a call in the office on 01234 757633 if you would like a more indepth description of the programme for the day.
Drifting is a separate course which we are happy to provide - along with many others in our menu and can incorporate use of your own car if you wish.

Any more for any more? Just over a week left before the decision to release the second instructor needs to be made.
In case this helps here are some quotes from feedback received from our clients this week:
"Thanks for an excellent day yesterday - really enjoyed the day and learnt a huge amount. I have done a number of track day and racing events and this was by far the most rewarding." AW - Beds
"Excellent venue - the best course, great equipment." SF - Surrey
"I just wanted to thank you for your instruction this morning. I have plenty to think about now and to put into practice this season.
I wanted to refresh my basic car control skills, iron out the obvious faults, learn some new techniques, gain some confidence and have some fun today, and I did just that. I have no doubt that I will have more confidence to smoothly and progressively nibble away at my times up the hills." SM - Hants

Let me check with Colin in between training sessions today .... The 3mm is a recommendation as performance starts to be lost after this. My technical knowledge doesn't extend any further I'm afraid to know if there is a difference between road and track/racing tyres ... so I'd better ask the expert!
Be back once he's finished Drifting.

Checked with Colin and cup tyres are fine so long as you will have enough tread at the end to get home ... fyi the legal limit is 1.6mm. The surfaces at Millbrook are not aggressive, unlike disused airfields - tyre wear and brake wear will be minimal.
Spares can be brought along if you have them and tyres changed if needed. Remember we'll have our engineer on hand all day to assist.
Hope that helps but if you'd like to chat directly with Colin let me know.

Hi Glendog thanks for that, i send a pm to Jo last night who may be able to get the oil, if you can get some oil it would be appreciated better to much than not enough. It was my first long journey for some and it may just be the level settling down, syaed constant after the first 50 miles .I thinks it castrol tws 10-60 from memory but im sure you know the oil. Got a 100 miles today from Telford to millbrook tonight so hopefully the level is okay at 0.4

Got back about an hour ago from Milbrook - what a superb day! :supz:
A well run, very comprehensive training day encompassing many disciplines and all expertly taught by Colin and Nick supported by Jo and Mark (mechanic).
The weather was kind to us and remained nice and dry enabling proper exploitation of the CSL near the limits of grip performance! Oh, and the limits of a Ford Mondeo! ;)
Milbrook itself is most impressive and simply huge. The Alpine loop routes are great to drive at speed and flying around the high speed oval at +150mph is something else!
It all culminated in a time attack competition in a Caterham - big fun from such a piddly little car. I have a newfound liking for them now! :hahaha:
All in all a great day and thoroughly recommended indeed - i wish i had done this a year ago when i got the CSL but it was still of great benefit today as the instructors pick up on your experience and push you accordingly  Unfortunately no photos as they have 'secret' stuff going on now and then and don't allow cameras! They were testing the Lotus Evora and various Aston Martins today when we were there.
Big thanks to the team at CATDT :smt023

Millbrook is definately a stunning arena to hone your skills and learn new ones.. The scenery is something else:drool:
It feels awe inspiring driving from the gates to the hospitality suite, let alone once your out there amongst it
Have to say for me I managed to get a lot out of the day and find a new confidence in the CSL as I honestly seemed to struggle a fair bit with the transition from 450bhp Evo IX GT to RWD.. Must admit the confidence did take a long time to show through on the high speed bowl  How close is the wall :bigcry: Colin said now imagine your a NASCAR driver a lot more speed involved and 40 odd cars to miss :hahaha:
Shoe horning my 18st frame into a Caterham was interesting to say the least and im quite sure I must of posted the worst time due to this extra mass.. Derek even removed his shoes to be pin sharp with braking and throttle movements :smt118
Glad the day went ahead and the members had a chance to sample what CAT have to offer ;) Their professionalism is second to none! From the moment you book til you leave the gate no question is too small.. So a big thank you to all of the CAT team, looking forward to working with you again shortly

Well being rushed from the night before lead to turning up on someones private driveway in Millbrook after putting in the office address, not the training ground was a great start! :banghead: Sorry for the hold up guy. Missed the safety brief but Jo filled us in.
You guys speak for everyone, but like to say again what a top day. So professionally run with good comedy value through the day, especially towards the end on the gymkhana. :hahaha:
I would like to give the drift/ nurburg prep a shot next and spend more time on the track as I found 4-5 laps was just enough to get a taster before being able to get into it. Before you know it your turning off and heading back to base.
Thanks again to Jo for the organising of such a exhilarating day not forgetting Nick, Colin and Mark for their experience guidance throughout the day.
Great meeting the rest of the gang on here. Hope to see you all soon on another CSL adventure.
