All but confirmed in this months EVO, in an interview with M Boss Freidrich Nitschke.

Of course, those at the M presentation last May, during the homecoming in Munich, will already be feeling confident about this, but the latest does sound very promising all the same :

EVO : "Will there be a lighter, more hardcore M4 ?"

Freidrich Nitschke : "Of course we are thinking, for example, that Porsche is very successful with such special models in the life cycle. We did this in the past. And I think we will do this also in the future"

Will it be at an acessable price, with a decent amount produced, is the big question.

If they do produce a M4 lightweight (CSL) version. It will be an instant swap from my E92 to one!

It's early days, but based on the initial reaction to the new cars, I think they need to get this version out a bit quicker. For the new M3/M4 not to get 5 star reviews has to be a sackable offence in Garching. Catchpole in Evo is underwhelmed for the same reasons as other journos.
Compare the response to when the E46 came out.

Autocar only kind of gave it a warm welcome.

Will be interesting to see what the chimp thinks of it.

His written review is on Pistonheads but the video couldn't be released in time due to embargo rules I think. Seemed to think pretty highly of it, but I think he judged it as an "M3 for the modern world" rather than comparing with their previous efforts.

I expect he will give it 5 stars.

He mentioned Porsche having success with niche performance variants, so if they're going to follow the GT2 / GT3 model, then the answer to that question is probably "no".

I think there's too much reading between the lines. By his statement I didn't get the impression a CSL was coming. Maybe something more like a GTS.

However, I hope I'm wrong.

Either way, the more I see/read about the new M3/M4 the more I have reservations.

I've decided I want to go back to an E92 V8. So, come the end of the month my M135i will be gone and I'll be looking for a bare bones basic V8 coupe. Budget £20-25k.

I'm done with new cars and I'll be more than happy with a V8, CSL, etc. I want N/A screamers and I don't care if they're slower ultimately. All I'm looking for is fun that doesn't rape me on depreciation.

The gentleman that did us the presentation in Munich told me back in December there will be no CSL in the M4 platform.
Also if you remember the test driver was explaining that they did everything they had done in the CSL in the new M3/M4 and it's very difficult to get it lighter.
If it will have to be lighter they will probably have issues passing EU regulations.

I think the new M3/M4 are good cars.
Unfortunately, I don't see a hardcore version coming.
Maybe they will make one hybrid, like the i8 ;)

Maybe a evolution and they just tweak up the HP, and put on some fancy door mirrors, boot spoiler and carbon bucket seats as an option.

Today I was told by Dr. Nietzsche in M Experience in Istanbul that a lighter version is coming but we shouldn't expect anything more than 50-60kg reduction over the standard car. Most of these weight savings is expected to come from lightweight front seats and rear seat delete. As others have stated the car has a LOT of lightweight features already.
Although he said that BMW M is in a R&D status on CF wheels but it might be another generation away...
