Some of you may have seen a number of my posts asking questions and looking for some parts. It's all for an M Roadster my family bought in 2001 from CoPart after the insurance had paid out due to a dashboard fire. Around 4000 miles on her,

I have a few photos of when we got the car home back in 2001 but can't put my finger on them at the moment. Here are some photos of more recent times, now we've bitten the bullet and started working on it.

I got it home to Northern Ireland and started the task of pulling it apart. Needless to say, a hammer and some decent sized crowbars were needed.

Got all the parts I need gathered up now including blue/black dash, dials, centre consoles, carpets everything but forked out for a brand new look from BMW which come in on Monday.

Final photo for now...

It's a S50 (iirc) engine, the E36 M3 Evo engine. Got the last of my bits today, and Dad arrived so going to shape at installing the look tomorrow. Will take loads of photos and post as we go along.

Dad was over last week with some more parts so we managed to get loads done, mostly successful.

Starting removing the old loom, trying to photograph as much as possible for correct tracing and routing.

Front half of carpet is in to, along with Heater box, window wiper motor just not taken any photos yet.

I've got all lights, indicators, heater motor, window wiper motor, washer pumps and clocks going. No ABS lights now that controller has been fitted, got Airbag lights though more than likely lack of seats.

Fuel pump not working though, after draining the tank and finding a very tacky substance at the bottom of the tank and in the fine mesh filter, so now on the hunt for a fuel pump. I can get to the pump once the carpets are in though, so I'm continuing to box everything up. Will get the dash and centre console in today hopefully, and clean up the seats for fitting the PAX seat once dry. Getting close.

It won't crank at all though, get dash lights but no cranking. On reading the codes we get error 66 which after some googling is suggesting 'Anti-theft system', immobilisor? I think the key I have has lost the code, so more computer wizardry is needed soonest. Waiting to get it mostly boxed up though before getting it connected.

Right better go, sun is out over here in NI, just wish the car was done now. :squeeze:

Quick question though. Switches on the centre console, can someone tell me the 5 switches that go under the dials?

Heated seats x 2, roof switch, AC/Recirc, what's the last one? Wee led?

Next step is new chassis number for dashboard and then window in, bonnet on ready for coding on Monday.

Cheers,
Barry

Over the last few days, received my new fuel pump so got that fitted.
Was going to go for an uprated one since a new one is over £300 but Dad sourced one from a breaker and sent it over for me, £40.

Changed the Oil filter since I'd heard that Oil Filters that have lay in cars for such long periods of time can break up once the car is running.

Ok, latest is:-

The genius with the computer has the car cranking over but won't start. Throwing up a chassis number mismatch error code.

The only things that aren't original from the car are the 'Body control module' (behind glovebox) and the dials/clocks. His computer is saying the chassis number from the donor car we removed the clocks from, my question is, can these be recoded?

Cluster won't stop it starting iirc. Have you replaced the EWS module? Blue plug, behind glovebox, again iirc...
The EWS is the link between the key chip receiver and the dme. Without the correct chip/EWS handshake, it won't go.

sailorbaz
26-06-2014, 07:16 PM
I think the EWS module behind the glovebox was changed with one from a salvaged car but the one under the steering column has been replaced with a new one from the dealers ordered off the chassis number.

It's cranking over but won't start yet.

I'll pass this on to my man, thanks.

Chip in key is linked to EWS. if its a salvage unit you'll need the key that goes with it.

sailorbaz
26-06-2014, 08:06 PM
Can the salvaged unit be recoded or do I bite the bullet and buy a new one from BMW?

Thanks again for your knowledge sharing.

Don't think so mate. You need the matching key to that ews.

uncle benz
26-06-2014, 10:11 PM
Sadly not. Blank new unit can be burned to existing key, or secondhand unit with matching key. Coded units cannot be reprogrammed.

uncle benz
26-06-2014, 10:20 PM
Just to clarify, DME, EWS and key must all match. If going secondhand you'll need all three. Best route here is new blank EWS. It'll still need coding though.

sailorbaz
26-06-2014, 11:08 PM
I have the original ECU for the engine under the bonnet, never been touched. Also, we bought a new EWS module for the immobiliser which is fitted under the steering column BUT the one mentioned before with the blue connector behind the glovebox is a salvaged one.

I would rather get a new one from BMW and code it to be honest.

To be honest, I'm over the moon it's even cranking and turning over on the starter motor, I'm a happy man. For now...

uncle benz

The unit under the steering column is the transmitter receiver module. Bit like an amplifier as I understand it.

Found this little bit of info, might help to understand it.

The module under my steering column looks like this...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251394886442

Together with this, I should have another module behind the glovebox yes? From what I understand, I'm going to have buy a new one from BMW to be coded with the key/ECU etc.

Really hope that's us now... Mileage correction and replace a couple of lamps on the instrument cluster next

uncle benz
03-07-2014, 09:20 PM
Nope! The system you have there is EWS111D. Not what I was expecting, actually...
It's all in one with that system, so no additional unit behind the glovebox.
This is the highest sophistication of anti-drive away protection of its type, and you will probably need a dealer machine and knowledgable operator to reset the DME rolling code table to #1.

sailorbaz
03-07-2014, 11:38 PM
So, should I unplug the module behind the glovebox?

The module under the steering rack is brand new from BMW by the chassis number and has been coded correctly. Would the other module behind the glovebox confuse the system if I've it plugged in?

It's slowly becoming clearer now.

Thanks again,
Baz

uncle benz

The EWS module should need no coding. The proceedure you need is to reset the DME's rolling code table back to the start. Both the EWS and the DME will have a rolling code algorithm, which obviously match each other every step. The new EWS will start from step 1, and the DME will need to be instructed to go back to step 1 and from there the two will match. I don't know what will happen if the EWS has now started and moved on. You will need someone with more experience than me if that is the case. I do have a mate who is ex-BMW master tech, now running his own independent specialist garage. PM me if you want me to put you in touch. He is a lovely guy and will probably advise you if needed.

The guy that has the car now is ex BMW tech and appears to have all the tools and equipment. The last time I spoke, the car was cranking over, even think he said it was running for a few seconds before packing in. I've mailed him, just hope he checks his mail regularly.

Hopefully he will get another look at it tomorrow and get in touch. I was reading that file again about the immobiliser stuff and seen the thing about the rolling codes.

I have to keep reminding myself it's going a lot better than I thought it ever would. So close now, I'm just glad it's cranking over showing the starter is still good.

Thanks again, will keep you posted.

Spoke to one of the guys at the garage since he wasn't in when I called.

No further forward really, car is still cranking to the point where it sounds like it's going to start but doesn't actually start. The lad told me he's ordered a camshaft/crankshaft sensor... Not sure which one (if indeed there is both) the line was very poor and your man was difficult to make out.

He did say that it was showing no error codes though, which he found strange. I didn't get round to asking about the clocks or the LCM module, I'll maybe call back this afternoon see if I can speak to the main man.

Thing about he EWSIII though, the car I took the modules from had both the module under the steering column and the black module behind the glovebox. He appears to have got round the immobilisor issue though... Maybe

sailorbaz
09-07-2014, 04:32 PM
Spoke to the main man there a while ago, he told me the car tries to start for a very long time and eventually will fire up for 2-3 seconds before dying again. It'll do this over and over again.

He's very confident we're around the immobilisor issue and is going to try and code the LCM later today. He insists the clocks can't be coded but he can correct the mileage

The new sensor will be in before the weekend hopefully and I've to call him next week again, no bother.

Once we do get it running and all serviced up, I may get the clocks coded if need be but all the needles are working as tested including the rev counter which moves when the car is starting and running albeit for 2-3 seconds.

Thoughts?

SHE'S RUNNING!!!

He got her running over the weekend there and it appears to have been the clocks stopping it from running. He tells me he hasn't coded the clocks, somehow got the immobiliser and all lined up without the clocks, installed the clocks again and it's starting everytime, on the button.

My only worry is that tamper dot now. I've asked him to have the mileage corrected and let me know about the tamper dot. He still insists used clocks cannot be recoded and new ones are £700 but I feel I may be contacting John Leacock for further advice.

Well chuffed is an understatement, he says she's running like a dream. Hard to believe it's sat for 13 years, without electrical power never mind run.

Happy days.

Well, time for another update.

Got the car home today, starting and driving well. Nice and straight apart from a slight wobble at 60mph, which I'm putting down to a bad ding in one of the back wheels, which I'm been told will repair.

I shaped at overhauling the brakes this afternoon. Got new pads but knew the discs were in good shape, just needing a scratch with some 120 emery pads on a grinder. One side done...

Once the brakes are done, couple of other wee things including that back wheel but main thing is to get mileage corrected before booking it in for an MOT.

Once she's MOT'd, I'll use her until the weather breaks and then do the wheels over the winter.

Very good, I was waiting for that. All for a bit of craic hey, good laugh like.

For others reading, car sailed through MOT without a single word, taxed that afternoon and since driven about 300 miles without a fault. Could do with the AC being gassed up but now that I'm on my way offshore and won't be home until October, I doubt I'll be needing AC between now and next summer.
