Can you use them all year round it you drive with care. When I test drove my first CSL in was November and wet and the car had Cups on. It felt OK and Edward Lovett (Dick Lovett) didn't half give it some.

Yet!!! I have them on all year round. Don't do much mileage in the Winter, which might explain why. Snow last March in Germany was fun. :bigcry: :hahaha:

LOL
I have only ever run on cups apart from 1 set of PS2's which I had on there when I bought the csl but then they came with the M3 19". Its not a daily drive but I have driven in nearly all weathers (except snow) and as long as you are careful I have found they are fine.
The worst weather I drove in was on the way back from Llandow at night in the pissing rain and the M4 had standing water on some parts but I was still going along at the speed limit (or thereabouts...) and had no problem with any aquaplaning or feeling like it was going to get out of control. As long as you are smooth with the throttle you will/should be fine... :-D

Same as the Yoko A048's that I had on my Lotus Exiges...people were always asking if they were lethal in the wet but you just drive to the conditions...I never had an issue with them.
bryce

Makes complete sense, just drive according the the conditions. ie your tyres and weather.
I drive like a pussy in the wet/winter, so once Im on Cups, that'll prob be me forever :-D Couldnt justify additional tyres for 4months (winter) / 500miles.

No....but the legal cut slicks developed by Yoko for Lotus, that has been on some of the Lotus I've owned, are the same would imagine. Did test drive a CSL with them on though.

I bought mine with PS2's on 3 years ago and HAD to try the Cups...WOW! Totally transformed the car, was so pointy and go-kart-like, it was fantastic.
However, since mine is a daily drive (When on Terra firma of course) and after a couple of bad experiences in wet on nearly done Cups, I run 'normal' road tyres now. All this talk of Cups though is making me wanna out another set on just to remind me how good the car can be.

But beware.......... the slip angles......... sudden breakaway and you have to be quick to catch.

IIRC, Elliot said on Mtorque its difficult to get them to temp on public roads?

15-02-2009, 09:24 PM
i agree with that you probably end up with less grip on the road especially in scotland, ps2 work better on road
Cups will be fine! After a few miles have some fun! :-D
AlexGTT
16-02-2009, 06:30 PM
They are fine on the road and despite other comments, you can generate adequate temps on road. Just adapt and change your driving style. You can feel the grip levels build very easily once you get to know them.
Just one word of caution. When they're brand new they are VERY slippy slidey. They need a scrub in. On track be very cautious for 2-3 laps, as Mark found out in his post. :bigcry:
Sounds good thanks for the info Alex!
SpineOnABap
16-02-2009, 08:01 PM
Yeah as Alex says you can get to "adequate" temps on the road, enough to still be miles ahead of the PS2, but you'll never get to the levels you can on track.
AlexGTT
17-02-2009, 12:06 PM
Agreed Elliot, they are in their element on track and to be honest, if I drove my CSL every day, all through winter, I'd probably run PS2's and save the Cups for Summer only.
On your favourite, deserted, roller coaster A/B road (we've got loads in Wales  ) you can work up decent temps to outperform pretty much any other road tyre. I usually stick in 26-27 psi cold, check temps half way through my run and they've levelled nicely at around 31-32psi which feels just right.
On track you'll find yourself dropping the pressures quite considerably as you build up speed and temp, usually way lower than 26psi cold, especially if the ambient temps are high. So remember to put some pressure back in when they've cooled down for the drive home.
so 26-27 psi in cups for road use?
AlexGTT
17-02-2009, 12:22 PM

If you plan on pushing up the pace and depending on road conditions. I'd say find what works best for you. Mine only comes out for fun and this works well for me (maybe I should write a disclaimer here :hahaha: )
I've seen so many Cups worn out because they are over inflated. They'll go in no time with 33psi cold in them, that's for sure. Unless you drive like Miss Daisey. :-D

Alex - what sore of mileage life do you get from your Cup tyres? Do you have them fitted for your drives over to the ring? Those Belgian 'A' roads are rough as f**k!

Yes, they are fitted all the time on mine.
Typically I'm getting 6,000-7,000 miles out of the rears provided I'm not being a hooligan. 3,000-4,000 miles fronts. If the car is set up correctly you'll probably you'll wear out two pairs of fronts to one pair of rears. That's road mileage with a couple of trackdays thrown in.
If you do loads of trackdays, they'll wear out pretty quick. I got through one set in 1.5 trackdays once but the car wasn't set up very well back then. I got them over-heated and I didn't pay enough attention to pressures. :smt103 :smt102 :smt115
Sounds good Alex! Cups are perfect for me, only use the car when i want if the sun is out etc!

Cheers Alex, the mileage isn't quite as pants as i'd imagined! My car's suspension is set-up much like yours by Simpson also - using OEM shocks and adjustable top mounts.
I plan to stuff my track wheels in the back seat for my first Ring trip in May! Having only ever used PS2s on track before now, I am certainly looking forward to 'feeling' the difference with Cups - once warmed through of course! :hahaha:

Alex, how come you're only getting half the mileage out of the fronts (versus the rears)?
I'd say 6,000-7,000 out of rears if you really try hard, but more out of the fronts.
It was the rears that always cost me. One set was 1500 miles but it did include a LOT of road drifting.

It was the rears that always cost me. One set was 1500 miles but it did include a LOT of road drifting.
I was expecting that as well but I find trackdays are wearing the fronts faster. Normal road driving wear seems much more even wear, front to rear but as soon as I hit a track, especially tracks with a seriously long, fast corner with high entry speeds like Mallory (1st corner), Snetterton (long right before chicane), Spa (double left hand down hill) the fronts get hammered. Probably got a lot to do with driving style. I've always tended to lean very heavily on the fronts on the way into corners keeping everything very much in line on the way out on the power.
That seems to be backed up by my tyre wear patterns. I had problems wearing the outside edges of my fronts quicker than the inside, even with nearly 2 deg negative camber. I now run 2.5 for track and get almost perfect even wear across the fronts.
Last October, I arrived at Snetterton with absolutely mullered fronts. They'd gone on the same time as the rears which were maybe just 2/3rds worn. I had new fronts that morning and I've only just changed the rears in the last week after a Ring trip, in November and Oulton Park trackday, in November.
My conclusion is that I don't get anywhere near enough tail out exiting corners. Something inside me knows it's slower and won't let me do it. I think I must be :gayfight: :hahaha:
SpineOnABap
17-02-2009, 06:05 PM
Right! Sorry I thought you were talking 'road', rather than track.
That extra camber is needed on track. In the early days (I'm talking '03) a few of us got through a few sets of fronts finding that out! :-D

Aren't they just! I also change my own on our tyre machine with the help of one of the lads and a large 'G' clamp to curl the sidewalls onto the rims. I take about 1/4 hour on each wheel just to keep those rims perfect. :gayfight:

I'd forgotten about this thread! Well, I can indeed confirm that Cup tyres rock compared to road tyres on a CSL! :supz:
I can only compare them to the PS2s that i have used on previous trackdays but they give awesome levels of grip in the bendy bits and inspire massive confidence in the car. I managed to shave on average over 20secs from my previous Ring lap times.
Like AlexGTT, i have adjustable camber plates and these do help with wear and longevity issues as long as you keep checking those pressures!

So from reading this thread i take it you should run about -2.5 camber on the front on track yes???? What camber should i run the front on the road?
What about the rear camber???

Bealo, as mentioned on another thread you need to run what "you" need to run and only a tyre pyrometer or trial and error will tell you. If you have stock suspension then I'd suggest it seems 2.5 deg neg is a good starting point from others accounts. If you have upgraded the suspension it would seem in some cases 2 deg is enough. This will depend also on your driving style.

Well, base it on what you use the car for.
Mine has had two geo setups there now, the latest being more extreme. TBH it hunts cambers a lot more and tramlines too... so on the road it is actually worse. Great on track though.
