While I'm at my brake refurb I noticed the clamps on the exhaust where they attach to the back box r badly corroded and one is broken. Can these clamps be bought on there own or just with the exhaust ?

The easiest and cheapest fix is to use Peugeot clamps. If you do a quick search there are quite a few threads with info.
The Peugeot clamps are readily available on ebay. You only need to do one side, the side where the clamp doesn't come off without grinding it off.
On the other side you can use new oem clamps and gasket.

I had to fix both exhaust clamps recently, just bought 4 of the standard flanges from bmw, cut 3 in half and welded them back together on the pipe then painted with high temp paint! Looks better than the after market clamps but does mean both parts of the exhaust need to be on the bench!

That's a good solution to an annoying problem  It's a pity BMW guys didn't think of designing it like that in the first place :)
Out of interest, which cutting method did your friend use to achieve this neat split ?
