Merc SLKs....
What should I be looking out for ?
Early ones seem to go for not much money now..

When a single digit nipper, I always promised my Ma I would buy her a Mercedes "sport" when she looked on enviously at the posh mums in their old SL Pagodas at the school gates......so looking to make good on that promise for her birthday. Old SL are now way out of budget, but this'd hit the spot I reckon....she only does maybe 1k miles pa in this so high mile car no prob as she has a daily shopper as well. Her face will be priceless.
But I know F all about them......help.....cheers lads

What a softy with a heart of gold, who'd ever have thought that!
She'd be made up, you could expect tears and lots of brownie points for you!
Just don't forget the bunch of flowers on the driving seat:thumbs:

Early cars, referred to as W170, split into 2 camps, pre and post facelift. Where to go..... All cars can rust, most notably front wings, rear arches, just about anywhere.
230 Kompressor engines are complex, and require an inspection by someone who knows them before purchase IMO. The facelift Kompressor engines can suffer engine oil migrating through the wiring loom, which is a pain.
V6 engines are bombproof. In my opinion probably one of the finest engines mercedes have ever made.
722.6 auto box similarly tough. One or two possible issues, but not terribly expensive to fix. Soft parts do wear, but they will cover high mileages before needing a rebuild.
Diffs can sweat a bit of oil, but otherwise strong.
Interior furnishings are showing their age now. Peeling door cards and dash trims common.
Roof mechanisms generally trouble free. Occasional snapped cable.
Central locking units can fail if not "modified"
Headlamps steam up. I could go on.....
These are older cars now, but if you can find a well cared for, garaged from new car, you could be on to a winner.
We still have my wife's year 2000 slk230k. We have owned it from new, 22,000 miles, never seen a wet road. It hasn't been used since the kids came along. Still mint, and I'm sitting on it in the vain hope that one day it might be worth something.....
Hahaha.

Facelift of the mk1 occurred 2000/2001. Easy way to tell, side repeaters on the front wing for pre-facelift. Repeaters on the back of the door mirrors is a facelift car. V6 engines are only in the facelift model.
Mk2, w171 came along in 2004.

One previous owner from NEW, FMBSH, many OEM extras and very reasonable 80K miles
A lot of car for £3995  with a bit of room to haggle.
