OEM Windscreen Question

Dear all

I have just had my windscreen repaired, after a very nasty stone chip, and sadly, its left a mark.

I spoke to the auto windscreens engineer, who advise me that If I had it replaced they would not use a OEM windscreen.

I assume a none OEM screen may harm the cars value, and if this is the case, has anyone gotten thier insurance company to replace thier screen with the correct BMW OEM unit.

Most OEM screens are merely Pilkington glass in reality and as long as you get the correct type as per the original spec of your car (climate comfort, green shade tint, etc) then I see no reason why anyone would try and lower the value of a CSL based on whether the windscreen has the BMW propellor on it or not.

I had a Pilkington screen back in 2009 and have had no issues.

Insist on them fitting a BMW screen and if they refuse call another company.

I asked two local companies to me in N.I a few years back about replacing the screen on my E60 M5 and both said for BMW's, especially those with auto lights wipers etc they would only ever use genuine screens as there are to many issues using non gen such as auto wipers, lights, dimming mirrors not working correctly.

I used Auto Windscreens and managed to get a Genuine BMW part.
Although they said a non Gen one would also be its replacment, I just simply put in a request for a Genuine BMW part and without a fight it got approved. I see no issue with yours should you ask, however it all depends on your Insurance Company as they're the ones to be paying Auto Windscreens for the work.
Call Auto Windscreens and they will deal with the request and will liaise with your Insurance Co.

As G-Dog mentioned, both Pilkington and BMWs part is identical - bar the small BMW logo printed above the word 'Pilkington'. Its either applied during manufacture or added after.

very useful thread and info gents. great to know if ever you need a replacement. mine has the comfort screen option with rain sensors.

Jon make sure you push for an OEM one and accept nothing else. argue it will de value the car and yours is near standard/OEM so why would you want a non OEM part!!

Insurers really are the fooking pits aren't they and what a scam this is not fitting OEM screen to save some $$.

It was Auto Windscreens that came out, and said they would only fit a replacement glass, when I quizzed them, they said it because this is all my insurance company "Admiral" would cover, and if I wanted an OEM, I would have to pay the difference.

Its been filled, so I'll see what the MOT chap says about it, and if it fails, ill start the battle all over again ;0)

mine has the comfort screen option with rain sensors.

Likewise, plus the windscreen guy said he could see it has the green sun strip and also some other stuff, like anti UV ;0)

I Mentioned that its a limited edition car to the glass company, and therefore was special, but they weren't too bothered. ;0(

I see the above folks used Auto Windscreens - are they the best ? any experience of any others ?

Also, what's your experience on length of time (from initial call to fitting ?)

I had mine done with BMW as i wanted the bmw glass with the bmw stamp
i had to pay for it and claim it back :thumbs:

Just had mine fitted this morning. Autowindscreens, BMW stamp (requested on initial call as per Karbon Kid advice), £75 excess payment only.

Not on purpose, but called AW ahead of CCI and ended up with an appointment from original call. Then calling CCI, I was originally routed to Aviva windscreen team which seems to be outsourced to Autoglass as when I started talking about AW, they lost interest:hahaha:

Went back to CCI and they figured it all out.

Only downside is I lose all my anniversary trip stickers and OEM cup stickers :(

Good result though I think.
