View Full Version : I've refitted the CPV today

I've been tracing a few oil leaks and for the cpv was leaking heavily. If you don't know its a small valve located in the block behind the exhaust headers. The buna O ring basically hardens and allows engine oil to pass.
I tackled this job today. You need to remove the reinforcement plate to access it.The constant pressure valve wasn't tight at all. No oil came out at all. I used a 3/8 ratchet and a flat socket. I reused the valve but replaced the o ring with one from Mpower22. This fits great. I put a dab of grease on to ease installation . Fingers crossed oil leak fixed.
Mpower22 from the M3forum in America shipped a couple of better quality O rings to me in England. They arrived in less than a week. The O ring is only available from BMW along with the valve. So potentially it could perish again.
It took around an hour to complete.

Oh no here we go, Silicon based ??? Nope just multi grease I had in the cupboard lol don't tell me it'll eat it up.
Shimmy - I'd say to all S54 motor owners. Get the O ring ordered ready. Then when your is apart it's ready to swap. A competent diy'er could do it.
Just to add you have to remove the large reinforcement plate under the sump/ suspension mountings. This is held on by 12 identical stretch bolts. These have to be renewed.
BMW part no. 31106772199
Torque to 43 ft lbs (59 Nm)
Then 90 +\- 30 degrees
Mpower22 from the M3forum charged me $11 USD (£7) for 2 O rings (1 spare) delivered to the UK and it took under a week to arrive.
This could become a sticky as I'm sure everyone's is leaking !!! :blalalala:

Wow, thanks for the great write up and referral! I just stumbled across this because I was doing some research on my CSL exhaust retrofit. I certainly am available here also and have PM email notifications set to active. Glad the new o-ring worked out well for you!

It's only right that if you have a good experience with someone/ something let others know. :supz:
It's a shame such a small part can cause such a big leak. Hopefully this is the best solution to what seems a common problem

Certain greases cause problems with rubber o rings- swelling or perishing....
Can I advise which ones do which to which...... Errr nope!

So are we starting a group buy for 'O' rings from the USA?
