I sold the Z3 coupe. I sold the X5.
I treated myself with a good commuting and family car.

A Singapore grey M5 F10.
It has light grey leather, black Pianolack wood, 20 inch wheels, comfort seats and all the necessary accessories.
I simply love it :-D
It's an angry drift machine.

Nice motor Alex, best of luck with it. How does it compare to the E60 if you've driven one of those before?

Would like to know how it feels vs the CSL. Less special I would assume but very torquey.

I keep seeing this car on a weekly basis in london, widebody Hamann M5

Thanks guys!

It is a fantastic vehicle. Its very comfortable for every day driving or travelling. Then you push a button and it transforms to a beast.
It is very fast and handles very well especially considering the weight.
The feeling of the steering is very good. Throttle response is epic - there is no lag whatsoever.
The chassis feels very solid, there is no flex.
A fantastic car.

Comparing with the csl...
Well in some way it feels similar as its a bmw with rwd. But I dont think the two can be compared.

Comparing with the e60...
I was always of the opinion that the e60 m5 had the engine of a supercar on a limo. This combination doesnt work well due to the lack of torque. Not to mention here that you had to have your own oil refinery to fuel the e60 m5. Also the design of the e60 makes my eyes hurt. I never liked the e60, the design, character and way it drives.
I think the f10 m5 is many times better than its predecessor.
It is everything an m5 needs to be, luxurious, good+smart looking, fast.

It is so many things, but underneath it all it is a rocket ship. Relentless especially through the gearbox it seems to go on for ever with out taking a breath.

hehe, I heard on the grapevine you've been pootling around in a m5.
my little bird said it was very impressive

funnily enough, I was at my local dealer last night and was shown a 13 plate m5 which had been in a bit of a bump........

well, completely and mullered are two words that could be described as an understatement as to its condition. lets just say there were 4 occupants and 3 of them were wearing seatbelts. the 4th was launched through the sunroof and is unfortunately no longer with us!

the statistics are : 5 rolls
: 40m dry stone walling demolished
: from start to finish (1st impact to landing on its wheel...yes wheel as there was only one on it) the car travelled 158m
:worst injury (other than the death) was a broken arm

we (me and the BMW techs) all agreed it would make a great advert to highlight the sheer strength of the body as all the doors still opened and closed (the door frames did flap around a bit) and apparently the floor looked remarkably unscaithed.
I was instructed not to take any pics as it is part of a police investigation due to the death. the removal of the main ecu's etc for the purpose of data retrieval to be read at Bracknell as part of the investigation.

a shame £90k of german excellence ended up looking so sorry for itself :bigcry:

a true super saloon!

Really loving the M5 shimmy. Have done more than 6000km already.
A fantastic vehicle. BMW hit the nail in the head.
I cannot find a fault and in many things or details I think to myself 'at last, what I always wanted'. I wouldn't want anything changed or differently done.

It is also very economical.
Driving to work and back it spends less fuel than my Z3 coupe did (11-11.5lt/100km vs 12lt/100km).

Here is a SportAuto measurement of the competition package at 650PS.

A lot of normal-M5 owners have dynoed the cars and make 620-630PS.

They sound Ok Alex but not really with the deep V8 rumble unfortunately.

That's what I love most.
Due to the crossbank exhaust manifold design, I think they sound closer to a flatplane crank V8 !

See below...

->

Due to the standard V8 crankshaft considerations, the design of the crankshaft is a crossplane design (see my blog post V8 Crankshaft). However, this inevitably leads to a less than ideal cylinder firing order, which is responsible for the "burble" you hear in a typical V8.

The problem with the V8 burble is that the exhaust pulses on each cylinder bank are irregular. This tends to throttle the exhaust flow. In the case of a turbocharger, the irregular pulses lead to a pulsating acceleration and deceleration of the exhaust turbines which is inefficient. To counteract this problem, BMW designed an ingenious (and patented) "crossbank exhaust manifold".

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qLKd59qylDY/UQlzVqDBV_I/AAAAAAAAASg/vc4RmfUaaNE/s640/turbo5.jpg

The illustration above gives the official BMW cylinder numbering convention for V8s, and gives the cylinder firing order in brackets. Note how cylinders 8 and 6 (on the same bank) fire one after another, as do cylinders 2 and 1 The crossplane crankshaft forces this firing order (including the two adjacent cylinders 1 and 2 firing one right after the other which causes heat buildup issues on the cylinder wall they share).

However, despite the uneven firing order, the design of the crossbank exhaust manifold ensures that the turbos each get alternate exhaust pulses, and within each turbo, the pulses alternate between the two scrolls.

An overview of the entire system air intake and exhaust is diagrammed below. The front of the car is on top.
