If you have a spare bit of cash and are looking for a serious E46 race car this could be worthy of consideration:

Isn't this The Matt guy of Cutters, his mates car?
Or is it Dan Stringfellow, or are they the same?

It's Dan Stringfellows car. Can't see it being eligable for that much now supercharged?
Matt Seldon has a S62 powered GTR Shim, nice car.

As Nathan says, what championship can you run something like this. It is so modified that you end up as an invitation entry or an open race, and then you are so fast I comparison to everyone else that you just disappear into the lead and that's it, may as well be on a trackday because that ain't racing.
If there was a one make series for standard e46 M3 using standard engine, box and final drive and a sensibly priced control suspension - I'd be in it.

Thorneys CsL cup was like that but it hit the recession head on.
He ended up concentrating on the modified cars to the detriment to the standard cars prob with the thoughts of aftermarket parts in mind, and the standard died and then also did the series.
Like you I think E46M3 standard class would be a great leveller as engine mods are so hard.
CSL caged (or M3 with CSL body panels, and carbon airbox and CSL cams)
No engine mods
Intrax/Nitron/KW Suspension
Cups/R888 etc (18" or 19")
Oil and diff coolers
Cat back Exhausts (open)
1300kg min

It looks like I may have posted something worthy looking at ?
Perhaps were talking a modern equivalent to:

with slightly less of the theatricals! Back in the day, pre 'M' era where it all began!

note the BMWRDC kumho championship next year is splitting into 2 sets of races, they will have class A and also class B/C/D the class A are basically the M3's 3.2 litre engines, there is about 4 e46's in that at present that will be all class A
Maybe they would consider having a option of a STD e46 M3 class to race alongside the A class cars, and have it restricted on engine mods, all run the same suspension like you have mentioned etc
they race on a PTW ratio of 235 per tonne at the wheels, so don't know what power you could run at 1300kg, but rough calculation that says 305 at the wheels for that weight, don't know what you loose on the power train (but I would say if you can get the e46 down to 1300 it should be on the PTW ratio)
Also they are letting composite panels for the wings/doors for class A

Iirc on the trAckday trophy /team trophy the Standardish m3/CSL runs just under 200bhp/tonne (wheel bhp/excluding driver)

"Classed" championships are usually flawed from the outset. Most racers want to run at the sharp end of the field for an outright win, but it can be a double edged sword when a slower classed car takes the overall championship honours. I'd rather compete in a single make championship where everyone is on a level playing from the start and off you go - the best man wins! Keep it simple. (A bit like me....):)

Well the Bmwrdc suits you now as it's one make class a for honors, then the others for another honor
Problem for most now will be they run on road tyres.

I think this has legs, but just use big standard m3- no one wants to crash their Csl front bumper every weekend? And surely the shitty 343 bhp engine I have is more reliable than your high strung expensive ones??
