Just came over to the Nordschleife via Calais/Brussels and noticed a new gantry not far from Calais with another on the same autoroute by Dunkirk. I definitely got 'frikin lazered' on the second one. Does anyone know if it is an average speed check and will they chase me at the docks in Calais for today or for ever or only on the day of alleged offence ( if of course one was committed).

Pip, to my knowledge, there are no av speed traps in France.
If you are over here frequently, I highly recommend investing in a coyote, they work in belgium as well...

Hopefully you are right Shoggy. They we'll be a French style ANPR come Big Brother style cameras for monitoring all the terrorists we are welcoming into our country. As both appear to be on the autoroute by the ports of entry. I shall try and get my wife to take a picture of them taking a picture of me :hahaha:

there is one if you carry on down that mway from DK to Calais.
its a big grey box on the concrete in the middle. there is then a second one a bit further down that measures
I thought that French cameras were not on the gantrys but the bix boxes that sit on the middle section between carriageways.
I had heard that Tony fcuking Blair had allowed the French to tap into the DVLA database to issue fine in northern French to speeding brits....the French declined the offer the other way.
fingers crossed you will be ok. I am going over at the end of the month to watch the last VLN of 2013 and driving so will keep an eye out.

Isn't it true that they need to catch you and fine you, because they cannot send any fine to you once you are back in england :blalalala::blalalala::beer:

On one of my first trips to the Ring, I went down in a 5-car convoy and things got a little excitable on that stretch of road you're talking about, Pip. Maybe it was the joy of being in France. Anyway, I also definitely got lasered (in fact, I think 3 of our group did - it was like we'd all been pap'd) and none of us ever heard anything of it.

Fingers crossed then. Das Chin, yes I am aware of the centre boxes as my Origin picks them up. I just thought they had moved on to get les rostbeef
Anyway yesterday was wet at the Nordschleife and I managed to spin the CSL at the last left hand downhill bend at Hatzenbach and then on the right hand uphill just after Breidscheid. That was my first lap and consequently I reigned it in. By lunch all was dry but this was followed by a prolonged closure after a black e46 M3 front ended somewhere between the Breidscheid and Bergwerk ( I think - Needforspeed may be better informed).
Track reopened at 1700 ish and then it was wacky races for an hour or so. I had some fabulous laps initially with a lovely German orange GT3RS following me. I then allowed him to lead to see if I was holding him up and stuck to him like glue. To be fair I do not think he was that confident as he hardly pulled away even on the straights.
Today is thick fog. :(. Let us hope it clears.

blimey Pete take it easy. No damage i hope. Fog normally clears by mid morning.
you were lucky at the hatzenbach as always really slippy there by the trees.
was it the steep hill after breidscheid you spun? That is ex muhle and its a mare as its off camber as you turn in and mid corner as you get on the taps. RWD cars always have fun there.
not good for that e46. Was it Nikki lauda where he went off? Very fast though so bound to be a mess!

Yes, it was. The steep right turn uphill. It was silly of me really as I know what it is like in the wet there. The trouble is because it was not actually raining my balls got a bit too big. I am trying to improve my driving sans DSC as surely the reaction to loss of traction and over/under steer will be different with it on.
Anyway the second lap was a lot more moderate at 9' 30". I was lucky. It could have been expensive. The fog only just appears to have gone so I may do a couple of late laps.

Weather been crap today with constant rain but too be honest there was more grip than yesterday. Unfortunately too many people got sucked into a false sense of security in the drying conditions yesterday.
Pip, good to meet you (briefly) today.

Finally got the picture I asked my wife to take of the 'speed cameras/spy cameras/Muslim fundamentalist spotter' outside Dunkirk on the autoroute. As said there is a similar set outside Calais.

Relax - They look like 2 sets of monitoring cameras, one pointing forwards the other rearwards, used for monitoring traffic flow.
Fixed distance cameras usually work in conjunction with embedded coils, there would be a tell-tale horizontal line across the carriageway, like an expansion joint. It would also have another similar installation approx. 1/4 mile on.

I've got the earlier version of this fitted to my GTR and it's excellent on the route to the Ring.

Don't worry. It's not a speed camera.
It will only be used for the truck: CO² bullshit taxes...

Ah thank you to all the reassurance gentlemen . That means business will continue as usual and I will potter along well below the speed limit.
I too have the predecessor to the Pogo ie the Origin B2 although it is no longer supported by the buggers. Still alright for Blighty though.
I have to say there seem to be an awful large number of cameras all in the same place for monitoring of traffic flow Neil.

Traffiphot S Piezo
The Traffiphot works on strips laid into the road at known distances apart. When the strips are compressed a reading is taken. The system then uses the average time between compressions to calculate the speed of the vehicle while a photo is taken. The speed camera is operated in an unmanned mode, so the evidence of speed must be corroborated from an independent source. (Motorway control room)
The authorities are required to prove that the device is in current calibration, that the sensors are laid to engineering standards and there is sufficient independent evidence to prove that the speed was correctly measured.

This is correct. They are trying to bring in a "per mile green Co2 tax" for anything over 3.5t. Looks to be monitoring every 5km or so on main roads and AutoRoute. Stupid really, just cashing in on trucks passing through and there is already a emissions charge on our truck's toll road tags in France!:moan: It's that bloody Hollande git!!

As lucio mentioned, they are not speed cameras. It's a bit the same like the MAUT gantries in Germany.

I believe the programme has already been scrapped for now.

Yes, they keep trying to bring it in and it keeps going back and back. Hopefully they forget completely in the end.

By the way, you British lot are quite friendly as well. Never received a ticket or anything, which is nice considering triple-digit mph speeds most of the time!
