View Full Version : ABS cut-off switch

I'm struggling with the ABS on my CSL, it triggers too easily on road and track. On bad roads the stiff suspension tends to trigger ABS, on the Nordschleife after Pflanzgarten the ABS is also triggered, with obvious hair-raising consequences.
Has anyone else installed a cut-off switch? Who to recommend?
Thanks in advance!

'ABS'? Do you not mean DSC?
ABS should not be triggered except in the obvious situations.
DSC will however be a big pain in the ass if you leave it engaged on track. Even in M-Track mode it will occasionally trigger unless you drive super smoothly.

What tyres, suspension, brakes and pads do you have, as I consider myself a very late braker and have never yet managed to trigger the ABS on the CSL (APs, RS29s, H&R coilovers and Cups)?
Also, with Planzgarten it is absolutely crucial to do all your braking before the drop or after the drop. If you brake during the drop, as the car unloads and reloads the suspension, it will indeed cause issues with ANY braking system and you could quite easily end up crashing by braking this way.....
I tend to brake come off the brakes, go over the drop and then when the suspension is reloaded again, give another stab if the car hasn't scrubbed off sufficient speed.

" . . . then you've got BMW's anti-lock brakes which are just sensational, they never, ever cut in too early . . ."
Mr. J. Clarkson Esq.
I think the OP means DSC.

.....as I consider myself a very late braker .
I was like that until I was taught better
GAS - YEs
DSC - OFF
ABS - GOOD
Brakes - Only if you have to

I use the handbrake.
No issues with ABS being activated :-D

I'd be looking at the suspension.

Agree
Or tyre pressures/grip,
I'd be looking at the suspension.

True enough, or geo, too much camber for example.

I do mean ABS, not DSC. On rough roads, it cuts in even under relatively soft breaking. On smooth roads or tracks there is no issue (except for Pflanzgarten).
I do run -3deg front camber, suspension is Intrax 1K2, brakes AP-racing 6pots with Pagid RS29.

Id say you have a problem, never had any ABS issues and have same set up as you. Cant recall last tme i felt ABS cut in

Although I should probably mention, by rough roads, I mean Belgian roads, that might clarify a thing or two...

What spring rates and damper settings are you running?
By turning off ABS you'll just lock the wheels so I can't see that improving things.

Unless there is indeed something wrong with my ABS sensor which makes it trigger too easily.
Don't know my spring rates, they were made specifically for Nordschleife-use, so I'd reckon not too stiff. Dampers are in their half way setting.

you might have really hard springs which would make this happen more htan normal (something like 140F/70R)

I should check with Intrax what springs they have fitted. That would clarify the harsh ride as well.. How does yours ride with dampers halfway?

If there was something wrong with a wheel speed sensor you'd have a light on I think.

Mine are 120/60 and springs are hardly any more harsh than 100/50. Damper setting s don't really change the ride much at all and at half way they are at a good road setting, spring rates are where it's at.
If I were you I would get the suspsension looked at

A cracked or damaged reluctor ring can give you ABS that jumps in too early. Not common on BMW's though, I must be honest.

where is your reluctor ring Gareth?

For you Shim, it'd be my reluctant ring...

I am running 130/80 springs. No issues with ABS and mind you I have -3.5 front camber.
As shimmy and others suggested, check your suspension setup.
I would prefer to know exactly what my suspension has, the "nordschleife setup" is too vague.
But then again I compiled my suspension on my own.

Correct, I've contacted Intrax, hope they can find which spring rates they have fitted to mine. Thanks for the advice!

Unfortunately my car is in Belgium and I'm in Switzerland.
Got this info from Intrax, doesn't seem too hard to me?
Front 120kg +1006 (helper spring)
Rear 60kg + 1006 (helper spring)
Length of the spring:
Front 150
Rear 220

I have 140 kg/cm front springs & RS29 on my e46 m3and abs only cuts in if I drag the brake off the take off of pflanzgarten. This activates the abs if I go for a 2nd dab in the compression as wheels lock for a moment when you leave the 'jump', hence abs having a fit.
Just came off brakes a little earlier and all sorted.
Only road I have ever really had it on is a Scottish road at glenshee but it has very big crests/jumps so same as above and not a problem with abs system
