Looking for a good value CSL, do they exist, especially if you don't have £20K

Think the cheapest I ever seen a CSL go for was 19-20k a couple of years ago before prices really increased and that car was also 100k+ miles.

15k just won't happen, it will either be a none runner, cat d or 150k+ miles. Your gonna need a miracle.

I know of one for £19, 999

What a dilemma - an itch that you can't reach!
£15K is relative, in M3 terms it would buy you a good one, however in CSL terms it will buy you very little. The cheapest I've ever seen one was £19,750 SB with 91+K, but that was getting on for 2 years ago.
I doubt very much that it would even buy you a 'Cat C' these days as with the cars the cost of parts is on the up also. A Cat D may be broken for spares, rather than fettled back into mobility.:bigcry:

My advice would be to reassess your priorities; Daily Driver or CSL (if you can't have both)
PS: Nothing wrong with a good low mileage smoker 330/335d, as a daily far more user friendly and comes complete with creature comforts, for the daily commute.

Far be it from me, but £15k would be very difficult as owners of the 293 remaining cars would, I assume, have the nouse to know the cars worth and importance.

Decent E46 M3 + MPSS + BBK must bring you close to the CSL for around £15k? Would u ever use the missing 15-20% anyway?

Sorry, but my advice is delay the dream, save some more (5k) and get a high miler, straight car.

Anything less is a very risky compromise.

Hi Philo - howmanyleft.co.uk - doesn't say colour I don't think.

My M-Sport 325 vert is prob feeling a bit better about things; with only 173 left - it's rarer than the CSL !

wasn't it suggested somewhere that a CSL could be broken for around £15K .... if that is the case then surely thats always going to set a floor in the market ?

Just to bring some glimmer of hope to the thread... I purchased my old CSL from Simpsons Motorsport for £19k with no tyres.

In the file of paperwork was the receipt from when they purchased the car from their client. No obviously it was a trade price, and the car needed some work ( nothing major - just a front end respray, inspection 2 and some discs and pads) BUT... It was bought for a fair bit less than £15k!

Probably the least amount of money a CSL has changed hands for though...

Ah, but that was back then, when they were 'two a penny', those were the days, but alas those days are no more! :(
I think I can safely say you won't see a CSL for sale less that 20K, in any condition. You can but wish/hope/pray, something might come along that needs work!

But be careful, I hear they don't pay out as much as they quote when they actually see the car. No sat nav, no cup holders, not even an airbag in the doors = Sharp intake of breath and £000s knocked off the valuation :-D

The best 5K you will ever save.....and come re sale you'll avoid the inevitable hassle of trying to sell a compromised example in a market of potential owners who are 100% OCD buyers!!:-D

Not strictly true, I bough mine for £20k by the time I had the tyres on, and we have one on here for sale with the same mileage today for £20.5k. So the market has only run away with the lower mileage examples... The market for high mileage ones hasn't changed - Shane also has a 98k miles CSL up for £20k.

£15k for one that needs a lot of work or with a blown engine or something similar is not out of the question... Granted you could break one for £15k... But let's face it - who can be bothered? I know I couldn't...

all good advice.

I did look at the CS, but when you just happen to be happily driving down the road, and a csl randomly pulls up next to you . you feel bad ;0( Plus the best bit for me is the side profile with the front spoiler, and boot lid, so it would be missing on the Cs, as well as the air box induction noise.

I just have been into M3's for my whole life, been the E36 registrar, wrote articles about them, been an Ebay reviewer, had my car featured in the BMW Magazine, even driven BMWs heritage fleet CSL, but never been able to reach that extra bit to buy one, so been buying cars that "would do"

So now, I'm borrowing the wife's peug, and seeing if I can hold out, and keep my cash in the bank, until one comes alone.

I have managed by some clever accounting to get my pot to 18K, but that's it for now, tapped out, and that's hoping no more of my kitchen appliances break, and my old cat doesn't have to go to the vets again this month.....

Ill just wait, and hopefully something may come out the wood work.

And I believe the last CSL that was broken was bought by the dismantler for 13K.

again, thanks for the comments, and hope to be a CSL owner / driver soon.

cheers

John

I am surprised how 8/10 owners got a better deal than PX with them, but then again, 8/10 owners said their cats preferred whiskers ! but who ever actually asked the cat?

I also had the prototype. ;0) Miss them all, but don't have deep pockets, or big enough garage to keep them all.

Over the years I have had MK2 escorts, owned a RS2000 MK1 AVO, amoung other interesting items, but always had to make way for the next project.

I don't really know what they are worth these days but figured a couple of years ago it was only ever going to up in value so keeping it dry and stored was no bad thing.

It was yes. On the 25 years of Bmw M3 photoshoot.

The competition V8 that was on Top Gear vs the RS5 was there too.
