I've recently started using my Gopro for videos instead of my Flip and am having problems uploading the clips on to YouTube. With my Flip, all you do is down load it from the camera straight to the computer and from there you can just upload it directly to YouTube.

I've tried doing the same to the Gopro vids and it keeps coming up with an error message (after spending 8 hours uploading each time). I have tried saving it as both an AVI and an MOV file and it makes no difference, I get the same error message each time (that it has failed to upload due to being the incorrect format). It is only a 9 minute video and has been run through the Gopro software to "invert" it and save it in "medium", which makes it 3.3GB.

So what am I doing wrong / what to I need to do to be able to upload it?

Please help LOL!

It's all to do with the "angle of dangle"
It has to be a file format which is supported, so it may need to be converted, before uploading. Good luck! :)

As you can see, both MOV and AVI files are supported....

Can you tell me what you have to do to the file from the Gopro to allow it to be uploaded? Just confused as to why it can't be loaded directly?

If u send it to me ill upload it for you ;) I find Vimeo simpler but the file size is poss what YouTube is moaning about, you may have to reduce quality

I really want it uploaded onto my own channel :). Do you know what the maximum size is then?

Hi Mike,

If you are on a Mac, it's pretty straightforward :

Plug in GoPro via USB lead
Open imovie
Import files using import option (GoPro files open up automatically)
Create new project and edit as required - optional
Then..then rather than use the inbuilt 'share' with Youtube (which doesn't seem to work with the GoPro files), I share and 'Export using Quicktime' to a location on the hard-drive.
The I drag and drop into the YouTube 'upload' window.

Guide here for specific video/audio settings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogWlr_W2DSU

I think the trick with the above is that the import into imovie process converts it into a native file format - and a much smaller file size - so on a Windows machine I am guessing the same applies, use some movie editing software to import (Windows Movie Maker, Vimeo ?) and then create an output file that is importable into Youtube.

Handbrake can also do the conversion.

I am not sure about file size limits on youtube, it seems to happily take 15 min HD movies, but I always go via imovie which I think makes the files smaller.

Hope this helps,

Mark

Unfortunately I'm on a PC :(. I think I'll have to try the Handbrake software - thanks for trying though :).

Think the key is, whatever the platform, get the file size down from the monsters that come straight out of the GoPro, they are massive.

Ok i stick micro sd into the larger sd card then insert it into my laptop open handbrake then import file from sd card then give it a file name and convert it to whatever format you choose.it takes time but will load as long as you don't have time out on laptop or screen saver.then just drag from desk top into you tube crop it and your away.i did this with a 1080 clip which is on you tube now as bmw m3 csl novice ring lap.now i don't know a thing about pc equipment but thats how i did it

Mike this is how handbrake works put ya sd card in then open handbrake.top left corner says source.open file and select from sdhd card e.g gopro100.it will load up the clip.says source gopro100 now underneath says destination file.click browse video then add it to a folder add a file name e.g im putting donny clip.so should read c:\users\****\videos\donny clip.mp4.then output setting will be the format you want mp4.below that you can cut/crop add remove bits(too advanced for me)
Back up top press start and away ya go its decoding

Mike, I've used a GoPro for a couple of years on a PC and never had a problem. I just hook it up into the USB port, and either load it onto the laptop using Windows Explorer, or directly onto YouTube by navigating to the GoPro device as an external drive. I do this with 25 minutes + of footage. Using windows explorer to navigate to the drive is the easiest way, I find.

I won't bore you with the tribulations I've had with VBox video...

Mike when I had a PC I used to open the files in Windows Movie Maker. Edit it (you don't have too) then save as HD and it reduced the file size by over half

The "Handbrake" software has reduced the size down to 556MB (down from 3.3GB), so fingers crossed it will upload this time (245mins to wait to see if it is successful :supz: ).

I've also tried the Windows Movie Maker and that cut it to 59MB, but it lost a huge amount of quality (although I may have saved it wrong, as I couldn't find the HD format, so saved it as the best version to play on the computer), along with making the image squashed (again was probably me not selecting the correct "size" - but that is because I had no idea what to set it to LOL).

It's been a while but there should be a drop down menu to select what quality to save it at,but you've done it now anyway :-D

Nice driving, Mike. Nice to see someone at a DN event who doesn't ride right up the arse of the car in front and hassle them to get by. Equally, that guy in the 911 with the orange stripe spent the whole of Tuesday getting in my way and not moving over.

Car sounds nicer than mine - which exhaust are you running?

For my personally experience, the best format for a video file to be in for quality size perspective is MP4. They are usually 25% of the size of the AVI files and can maintain the same quality.

http://www.appgeeker.com/how-to/convert-avi-to-mp4-mac.html

I always use AppGeeker video converter to to reduce the file size of my GoPro videos manually.

You can go and give it a try.

Thanks :).

As they said - it's supposed to be overtaking by consent and I know what it was like my first few times there - plus I don't want to damage my car or anyone elses :). We're all there to have a bit of fun and learn a bit more about the track :).

I was a little bit more forceful with the Aston, as he was on slicks and with it all being caged up, I assumed he was a racing driver giving laps (as he was using the old pits as well).

It's a full Supersprint "race" system from the headers back - sounds even nicer from the outside (50s onwards) ;):
