Just out of interest really, before the warranty expires as I might not renew it?

Is there a way of "testing" a Vanos unit, or is just down to an experienced ear?

IIRC the ones that are about to expire are usually quite rattley on cold start up. Have you ever changed the Vanos oil filter ? It's not part of any BMW schedule service and it's very often overlooked. When they clog up it'll cause oil starvation to the Vanos unit and can cause premature wear. It's relatively inexpensive considering the cost of Vanos replacement, once you're out of warranty.

It can also be an electrical failure. My vanos failed and it wasn't making any noises. It could be reset with an adaption procedure but it got progressively worse (more frequent). The solenoids appeared to pack it in, but I changed the whole unit. BMW UK no longer sell new units, only refurbed ones.
