Hi there,
Question is, which part of th eexhaust system is it that generates the raspy metallic noise
/ Is it the centre section, the backbox?
I like the noise, sounds quite rude, but would replacing the offending section with an aftermarket item, Miltek for example, retain the charcteristic noise but change it to a deeper sound, rather than being so tinny?
Thank ya, in advance.
I think the Rasp is from the Backbox!
The rattle is from the Cats! :wanker:

Can only comment on experience in my M3, i had a supersprint lightweight back box and the rasp went, sounded great when giving it some but did my head in when not, deep boom at mid range, put an x pipe on and no improvement although there is an x pipe with resonator so that might of got the rasp back.

Mine is the same when cold, lift off and it rattles and also you get dull thudding noises, sounds a bit like backfires, just the wadding/internals moving back and forth i guess, until it expands with the heat , then it stops.
Has anyone fitted just a miltek backbox? if so did it keep or loose the rasp?
Cheers

ask glendog to confirm but i think the milltek loses the rasp

I have a full Miltek system and the there is no rasp anymore but instead a deeper, dare i say 'meatier' tone. I like it but at times do miss the rasp.
As already said, It is the backbox that causes the rasp i believe. When i had the 100cell cats fitted, it simply added a din at certain revs noisewise! :smt012
I would love to have a Supersprint or Gruppe M fitted but they are just that little bit too much for everyday driving and carrying the missus around!

I have been thiking about an exhaust, but want to hear others before I decide.

I also had a really bad rattle when i had the 100cell cat fitted - i think it was the two cat sections touching or maybe resonating against the exhaust/transmission tunnel. It lessened when warm but never completely went away :banghead:
I think the standard CSL exhaust is perfect! :smokin:
Would maybe do the cats and a re map a some point but not really bothered!

I wouldn't have bothered doing mine knowing what i know now...
The £2k would have been much better put towards my APs - these really do improve the CSL :smt023

Yea but once you have done Brakes and KW's!
Might aswell spend £2k on track days and ring trips!

I love the standard note, but would be good to hear some aftermarkets.
Brakes will come first for me though.

Agree SMD.. standard is fine. Noise is there when you want it without taking over.......A chap in my street has a Gruppe on his CSL and it sounds terriblr....far to loud and take away the character of the CSL.....plus far to loud for most tracks I would imagine.

I've fitted a Miltek BB only, the rest standard CSL and can confirm I still have the rasp, which is bang on what I was after.
I did have the 'Unsilenced SS X-Pipe' with a GruppeM and fcuk me it was noisy in and out the cabin. Went back to standard 'X-pipe' but still too noisy so got a new BB from TMS and its perfect for me. Each to thier own though but yes, I believe the rasp is from the 'X-Pipe'

That's one reason why i settled for the Miltek in the end as i track my car a fair bit and didn't want to be turned away for excessive noise! :119:
I had a miltek fitted to one of my M3's a few years ago - kept it on for 2 weeks. its was embarrising.
the only exhaust mod i would do on my CSL is cat's, center section and poss manifold.

I have a gruppe m  It's not a daily driver so the noise isn't a problem. But personally I love the boomy spluttery noise it makes. Especially when you first start it up - my neighbours love me :smokin:
Because I love a bit of noise, I just found that with the standard exhaust, I was always booting it to over 2,500 revs to hear anything which wasn't very sensible and I felt I needed more engine noise at low revs.
This is the noise when revving and a launch control.

And this is it around town

I did my track day with the standard exhaust but I don't think I will do any more in the CSL so the noise issue doesn't worry me and if I do do another track day, I am good friends with my local "M" technician and he would just swap it back to standard for the price of a drink.
After my Brands track day I felt I ended up with quite a few more chips out of the paintwork and I personally can't afford to add any damage to the car or its components that a track day usually entails.

About to do , try some exhausts ... want the Supersprint really , as ive heard that one, and its got the rasp and looks standard ish just wider x4 pipes , so bit more aggressive , dont like the miltek rolled inners look , so waiting for a new tip design that might be coming on those and then decide
Just like the meatier look of the back box , and the deeper ( with rasp ) sound :smokin:
its the drone that did my head in :119:

I have the full milltek inc cats fitted (glendogs old cats) and im really happy with it, yes expensive but imo the noise is better and i have saved a lot of weight also.
I agree with Glendog that the AP's are the first and best mod u can do on the CSL
Any vids of the exhaust Bealo?

What the best method for keeping the cars rasp and CSL characteristics but increasing the noise? Cats, decat, bbox..etc?

IMHO Karbonkid, keep the middle pipe as I think that's where the rasp comes from.
Change the BB, its by far the cheaper than the cats and a good place to start.

I've got a full SS system with lightweight BB and silenced center section on at the moment. Fitting the 100 cells makes it quite a bit louder. I think I personally prefered the sound with std cats, SS silenced center section and SS lightweight rear box.
Saving weight was my reason for changing from standard. When we took off the rear box Ant @ Simpsons stuck it on the scales. 25kgs!! Weight of the SS lightweight was 10kgs in the wrapping, so probably 9.8 really. That's 15kg + weight saved. I think with the 100 cell cats, center section and backbox it's saved 25kgs minimum.
I'll try and get a video of the car at my next trackday and post it.
Just fitting a unsilenced senter section to a standard system would that make much difference to the sound, anyone done it?

I cant say for a CSL but when I had my M3 I had SS race cats, SS unsilenced X pipe and a SS lightweight race back box, when I got sick of the noise I changed the back box back to standard and normality returned. I ended up selling all 3 as I didn't see any difference with the standard back box on, wish I had kept them now so I could have seen what it was like on the CSL. I did love the sound of the full system in the summer months (having a bit of fun) but it was too much in the winter day in day out.
