Hello gents

A freind of mines company looks after a lot of under ground garages in london and he has stumbeld over this a BMW 635csi 1979 left hand drive.

the last tax disc was 1995 and it hasnt moved since then, the owner has done a bunk and as of next wednesday it has to be moved,

he has said to me if i can get it out i can have it,

now i know this could be a massive money pit as it hasnt moved in 20 yrs but i do like a chalenge and i have always wanted one of these.

what are going to be the main problems with getting this old heckter running ?

i know the brakes will be shot, fule will have gone off, and engine will be quite stiff but if it worked when it went in it cant be to hard to bring her back to best can it ????????

it has been dry stored for 20 yrs !!!!

Lovely old things, there main issues was rust and for example the front wings are NLA so worth a fair amount on there own if there good genuine that is, just the normal issues electronic injection was a bit problematic, are they metric tyres ? The wheels look like those that had the odd tyre sizes ! Enjoy I love em.

If it is free, I'd get it and even if you weren't going to do it - someone would love the project (so would be worth more than FOC ;)) :).

Nice old bus Jon  I've always liked these despite chronic rust issues :( Having said that this one should be well preserved considering it's been indoors for so long.

Before you attempt to jump start the engine, remove all the spark plugs (a good time to put some fresh ones in) and pour some penetrating or thin engine oil into each cylinder and turn the engine over without starting it ( with the spark plugs out) to fee up the rings first.
Yes it'll smoke like the P&O ferry for a little while :) once you've started it but it will prevent cylinder bore damage.
Keep us posted

Go for it jon, nothing to loose. That looks to be a good find, if not you can always break it a sell off the parts on our favorite auction site.

Excellent!
Just take your time and it'll be worth doing...especially as it's LHD!

As you'll see from my website, I've renovated quite a lot of cars from this era (especially E28s). Apart from the bodywork (which you say appears very sound) an E24 isn't very different from an E28 so if you need any help/tips as you go along drop me a pm.

Good luck!

well she is now up and running,

took the 4 pots off the front and eased the pistons and new pads and discs

had to replace a small peice of fule line that had blocked and gone hard

oil change, and fush out cooling system 3-4 times, a bloody good clean and some new BBS rims on there way via Ebay to come soon.

turn the key and she runs like a dream with a little 20yr rest in the middle

MOT first time,

so smooth to drive with 18k miles on the clock, dog leg manual box and a LSD to top it off !!!

goes like stink when pushed !

yea the fogs are a bit ropey but they are OEM and you know me i like to keep my cars that way !
they do look good when on though,

Matt i know i know i thought i might get some OEM stick from you but the wheels i have got for it are from another 635csi in silver not pimp white

:-D
For the proper full on OEM effect Jon you should go for the Metric alloy wheel option  despite limited tyre choice :banghead:
Few examples below:

That's OEM baby :supz:

Nice find. A '79 car is too early for metrics iirc those wheels on it currently loook like the gen BMW option wheels to me.

 Many 635 CSi owners ditch the metric wheels and got for the E34 15" BBS alloys as they are super close to the metric OEM and offer a wider & cheaper tyre choice.

Excellent Jon! Well done indeed! And so quickly!

As someone else said...I doubt those wheels are metric if you look closely at them?
