View Full Version : Handbrake only holding on one wheel

Pulled my car out of the garage yesterday. Last time I used it, I had washed the car and suspect the brakes etc were a bit damp when I parked it up.
On pulling out of the garage, the nearside rear wheel was binding. With a bit of power it came free, but now it seems like the handbrake is not working on this wheel.
Easy fix? or should I get Elms to check it out?

Drive the car and accelerate up to 15-20 km/h.
Put it in neutral and pull the handbrake to stop it.
Repeat a few times.
It should be ok after that.
Rust accumulates and this sudden use makes the rust to go away.

If it's not holding it may just need tightening, 10mm socket and lift the handbrake gaiter and adjust the side it's not braking on

If it was stuck and you have had to drive out aggressive to free it off you gave ripped the brake shoe friction pad from its metal body and thats why it no longer holds drive it slow so not to smash the whole lot up get it fixed properly!!!

I am pretty sure its what I said.
In BMW its going to be first thing they will do before opening the rear brakes ;)

I don't know any competent mechanic who jams the handbrake to free it up.
Did you not read the part he says the handbrake no longer works?how is forcing the handbrake gonna work?if not done soo slightly that will only pull the shoes onto a moving drum causing it to bend the mounting springs and spin the shoes alot more damage.
Your method only works when you have squeely shoes and only need to pull by one click to clean it.

Bmw dealer will NO WAY do that they will strip the lot down properly and change shoes discs and pads they are all about making money not budget fixes.if your bmw dealer does that i wouldn't suggest going there again

This happened to me, replaced rear brake shoes £69.00 from Elms, the cause is when the brakes are hot and you pull the handbrake on it cracks the shoes then they fall apart

Have you ever disassembled and assembled the rear handbrake on your own ?
I suppose your experience is by imagining or hearing what your garage told you.
How are you advising people then if you don't have first hand experience ?

I would of thought Adem could put a engine together blind folded let alone the brake shoes

I'd imagine Adem has done quite a few of these, being a mechanic and all.
I've been a senior BMW tech for the last 13 years, he speaks the truth:supz:

OK, then I have no clue and no one should listen to me.
I missed your advice piece though. It was go to the dealer and replace all parts ?
BTW, I am surprised you were asking me about advice on how to set up the laptimer.
I would expect if you are a senior tech you should know 2-3 things about electronics as BMW cars have quite a few electronics the last 15 years.
My apologies, I misunderstood.

Lol ha ha yeah fair enough cos all cars come with lap timers mate.what I was asking was how to overlay video and lap time onto a clip that can be posted onto you tube, and what devices would be best used to do this.has fuck all to do with mechanical systems and are electronic devices not associated with motor vehicle maintainance.and seeing i have no track experience or knowledge about lap timers or gps systems its got fuck all to do with fixing cars hennce i don't post opinions on things i know nothing about.your too wrapped up in yourself mate and i can understand why soo im not gonna carry on this with you as I and many others have quietened you regards what this post originally was started for so crack on enjoy your weekend and your vast knowledge.

I used to work at British aerospace, where tolerances are far far smaller than in these shitty cars...... There was the official handbook way of doing things and then there was the actual way lads on the shop floor would do it....
There is always more than 1 way to skin a cat, and I think that people are missing out on the subtleties of language and getting a bit carried away on this thread......

Btw. Motor factors do these shoes for about £18 and they're a piece of piss to replace. No need to go BMW for such a simple job

Remove carbon airbox.
Its in your face,
There is a mounting bracket underneath. accessible from under car.
Mounts from side.
Undo hydraulic pipes on top
Undo electric plugs
Not a difficult job.
Took me about 20mins to remove mine.

Sorry mate i was only trying to explain that the alternative method may be more debtremental than good those little shoes can't cope with a 360 bhp 1 tone car trying to stop on them they are tiny and mounting springs are even smaller amountin in unwanted damage
Hope you get it sorted whatever is wrong mate

And my apologies to you Adem and the rest of the gang.
I overreacted and it wasn't fair for you, especially when I don't know what is your area of expertise.
I will try to be more reasonable going forward.
Anyhow, I think the CSLregister is the best car community I have seen and all people that I have met are top.

I changed my handbrake shoes yesterday with parts from ECP (Pagids) Up for MOT today, here's hoping they're alright.
Took me about 90 mins on the drive, certainly feels the job anyway. Happy man, for £40. 30% off Pagids from ECP at the moment.
